This guy jumped from a balloon from a height of 30km back in 1960, yet he gets almost no recognition as being the first man in space, even though nowadays 30km is "considered" space. His record for highest balloon jump has stood til this day. And he is the only person to ever exceed the speed of sound without a vehicle. Pretty amazing guy and video considering they had no idea if he would be killed from this or not.

Heres the Wiki on the guy also: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Kittinger

hear that clacking sound?
Link Posted: 12/29/2005 12:17:24 PM EDT
That's a hell of a first step to take.
Link Posted: 12/29/2005 12:18:00 PM EDT
I had a buddy that I worked with years ago that refused to believe me that this actually happened. I finally showed him proof and he declared that 30km wasn’t actually “space.”

where's the video?

I've been a member of ARFCOM since 2001, and a daily regular GD freak, and I don't recall seeing it ever.

I'll take your word for it, but you guys and your 'dupe police' are annoying.

I posted it once several years ago and also as a reply to a post called something like "Coolest pic you will see this week" a few months ago.

Big, giant brass ones.

It is funny how many people REFUSE to believe it happened.

The pics are wild but the video footage is incredible.

From his vantage point he could see the curvature of the planet and the blackness of space.

That guy was actualy at the Air Force Museum here in Dayton about a year ago, shortly after they showed his story on the History Channel .... REally nice guy, i do believe they even have a display at the AFM about him...

I went to the archives and searched "skydive" on this site for the last year and didn't find it.

So much for claims of "dupe".

+1 I have been an almost daily visitor since January of 2000 (bought my AR15 in March of using advice from this site 2000) and I cannot ever recall the video being posted here, though I have seen it a couple of times on the History Channel.

In other words, STFU Dupe Police!

I remember seeing it several times on here. The dupe police shall not be kind to your false accusations of our wrongness of the dupage.

Make sure you read all the pages on that thread, good tidbits about the jump on multiple pages.

And the jump was also posted here: www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=1&f=5&t=278869&page=22

Not only did Captain Joseph Kittinger perform this amazing feat that required cast iron balls, he risked his life in several other aerospace medicine experiments and then went on to fly in combat in Vietnam. He was shot down there and spent 11 months as a POW.

Read all about it here.

And now, for some kick ass pictures taken by the good Captain.

And

102,800 FEET!

That's all he wore for the jump! Dayyum, no wonder he got banged up on the way down! We're not worthy, we're not worthy... He's got serious balls or happened to be crazy enough to be the first guy to try!
Link Posted: 12/29/2005 2:10:55 PM EDT
I posted in the thread a few months ago.

The gondola from that jump is here in Dayton at the "National Museum of the US Air Force." Nice display, big balls and a helluva man.

Well, your thread will be easier to search. It has "skydive" and "space" in it. The dupes were probably "hey, check this out", or "dayummmm!",

ETA, I just remembered seeing a History Channel thing on another guy like this. He rode the rocket sled (in fact it was his idea) to improve pilot survivability. Wonder if they ever compared notes.

This gets posted every two or three months or so. Regardless, it's impressive every time.

Sweet merciful crap!

I had never seen that before. "Brass balls" doesn't even begin to come close to describing that guy!

I hate to agree with BenDover because it probably means I'm wrong, but on this one I agree.

Post the dupe link or STFU you fucking Dupe Nazis.

OK, so you jump from 30km.

How high do you count to before you deploy your chute?
