I agree with you both but can anybody see the uber-gun control theory of "you really don't need guns since the police and military are here to protect you."

Same thing in Germany, Kenya, Zimbabwe, and no telling how many other places...

When I read this thread title, I thought this was going to be about some American farmer in Arizona or New Mexico border area getting kicked off his farm by a bunch of illegals and Mexican police

I don't think that 'fleeing to South Africa' is going to prove all that wise a decision, either.

What are these white folks doing any longer in southern Africa?

Do they really, really NOT understand what is likely going to be the end result?

Un-fricking-believable!

The countries that they lived in, no longer exist. Period.

I had a former South African Cop (White guy) in my CCW class last month.

We were talking about various things, then, he mentioned he was South African.

He left a few years ago, a fairly young guy, along with his family.

I asked him why and, he just looked sad and said:

"It's a zoo."

I don't know if it's the same as it was (maybe still is) in South Africa, but they cannot just sell everything and leave... The government won't allow them to take money out of the country, my mother has a good friend who lives in SA, they want out, but they cannot leave with what they own, I suspect this may be the case in Zim.

Besides, who wants to leave something they have worked so hard for.

If that occurred, I seriously doubt that they would be allowed to 'bug out.'

They should be very thankful they are not being required to leave their 'white womenz' behind.

There's competing concerns on both sides here. The white farmers are losing their property and livelihood to native inhabitants who feel the land was stolen from them in the first place by colonial governments. In the end, everyone loses as the country plunges into further chaos.

Newsflash: Most of Africa is in dire shape.

Because they are as African as those taking their property. It is not as if they just waltzed in to Africa from wherever and started a farm. . The majority of these people were born there; in many cases, their families have lived there for hundreds of years. And, their country's name changed name a number of times, so what? So they felt why run?

My (maternal) grandparents' farm was taken from them when the Russians occupied Hungary. My mother wanted them to come to the US, as she and my dad were here in the US, and they could be out from under the Russian boot. My grandfather said he wanted to stay in his country, and "did not want to be a beggar in a foreign land." So, he worked, and eventually built another home. Never did get his home or land back. One might say that the gangs weren't killing them there like in Africa. Enough did die. The Russians and the Communist puppet government needed the farmers for much the same reason ans commented above: they starved without them. So, I can understand why the African farmers wanted to stay in their country.

My grandfather's home was on the same foudation blocks as the family's first home, built in 1754. They had just returned to the region after having returned after a Turkish occupation. If one ignores that gap, their family lived in the same 30 mile or so radius for nearly a thousand years. One doesn't give up that easily. My dad's family has been in the US since before the Revolution. When I see all the stuff about the foreign invasion, even if by "birth bomb", I have to wonder if I will not be faced with somethig similar in my lifetime: fight or flee. I think it's obvious what I'll do.

The gun control nonsense is just a ruse by subversives and their dupes to lay the groundwork for an easy takeover. Looking back at just my grandfather's life, they laid down their arms after the surrender. After the phony terms of the "peace treaty" it was too late. They no longer had the means to resist the Russians. Look at the damage during the Revolution of 1956; imagine what it would have been like had the populace been armed. Sounds like the thinking of the writers of the Constitution when they wrote the 2nd Amendment.

Your implicit recommendation is, of course, the practical one: get out and make another start where you are not such an obvious target. But, that only acknowledges that racism is a reality, and isn't just white on black. And, given the brief historical perspective above (not meaning to hijack the thread) the thinking of the indigenous white farmers in Zimbabwe, I can see their reasoning. However, in this world it is doomed to failure, and a lot of silly people will find out who the minority is.

man, i know some white rhodesians and they're really getting fed up. a lot of them, blacks and whites, are ready to go back to the bush...and they might just get help from some other african countries. moogie and company have become an embarassment to the oau which is trying to rehab it's image in the world.

Breaking News...........Zimbabwe one step closer to the civil war its been leaning towards for 10+ years. They probably did them a favor, giving them a nudge out of the country. If they had stayed and been killed, we would have read how the savages act, all by people who have never been there........

Sensationalizing? Nahhhhhh, we know this Black war Vet is having his land taken too, but nowhere do you hear it in those terms.

Friends of mine owned a 60,000 acre ranch in Zimbabwe. I went over and visited them three times. The government there is corrupt at every level, and no one makes any attempt to even be discreet about it.

42,000 acres of my friend's ranch was stolen from them several years ago, and the rest was taken this year. They are now living in an apartment in South Africa. I hope that they were able to smuggle some assets out, but it would have been difficult. It's illegal to take more than $5,000 out of the country (or at least that was the number when I was there).

What I don't understand is why the white farmers are going so peacefully this time. They put up a heroic fight back during "the troubles". This time they aren't even scorching the earth as they leave, let alone resisting.

Most of the farmers over there are armed like we WISH we were. My friends house was practically a fortress, with a chain link fence around it designed to detonate RPG's. One of their Land Rovers had so much armor it could hardly move. They had weaponry up to and including a Finnish mortar.

The part that really galls me is that the US is still sending millions in aid every year to Mugabe's government.

Actual violence against white farmers has been rare, so far. I have heard reports of only a few (less than 5) who were injured and do not recall any deaths. The white folks here are doing what they can do as those who have been completely disarmed. Without weapons they can take pictures . . . and then leave. As others have said they are not allowed to remove cash from the country.

Zimbabwe used to be the breadbasket of Southern Africa, now they import food and starve.

Here's what a native African thinks:

Let Africa Sink
Kim du Toit

When it comes to any analysis of the problems facing Africa, Western society, and particularly people from the United States, encounter a logical disconnect that makes clear analysis impossible. That disconnect is the way life is regarded in the West (it’s precious, must be protected at all costs etc.), compared to the way life, and death, are regarded in Africa. Let me try to quantify this statement.

In Africa, life is cheap. There are so many ways to die in Africa that death is far more commonplace than in the West. You can die from so many things--snakebite, insect bite, wild animal attack, disease, starvation, food poisoning… the list goes on and on. At one time, crocodiles accounted for more deaths in sub-Saharan Africa than gunfire, for example. Now add the usual human tragedy (murder, assault, warfare and the rest), and you can begin to understand why the life expectancy for an African is low--in fact, horrifyingly low, if you remove White Africans from the statistics (they tend to be more urbanized, and more Western in behavior and outlook). Finally, if you add the horrifying spread of AIDS into the equation, anyone born in sub-Saharan Africa this century will be lucky to reach age forty.

I lived in Africa for over thirty years. Growing up there, I was infused with several African traits--traits which are not common in Western civilization. The almost-casual attitude towards death was one. (Another is a morbid fear of snakes.)

So because of my African background, I am seldom moved at the sight of death, unless it’s accidental, or it affects someone close to me. (Death which strikes at strangers, of course, is mostly ignored.) Of my circle of about eighteen or so friends with whom I grew up, and whom I would consider "close", only about ten survive today--and not one of the survivors is over the age of fifty. Two friends died from stepping on landmines while on Army duty in Namibia. Three died in horrific car accidents (and lest one thinks that this is not confined to Africa, one was caused by a kudu flying through a windshield and impaling the guy through the chest with its hoof--not your everyday traffic accident in, say, Florida). One was bitten by a snake, and died from heart failure. Another also died of heart failure, but he was a hopeless drunkard. Two were shot by muggers. The last went out on his surfboard one day and was never seen again (did I mention that sharks are plentiful off the African coasts and in the major rivers?). My situation is not uncommon in South Africa--and north of the Limpopo River (the border with Zimbabwe), I suspect that others would show worse statistics.

The death toll wasn’t just confined to my friends. When I was still living in Johannesburg, the newspaper carried daily stories of people mauled by lions, or attacked by rival tribesmen, or dying from some unspeakable disease (and this was pre-AIDS Africa too) and in general, succumbing to some of Africa’s many answers to the population explosion. Add to that the normal death toll from rampant crime, illness, poverty, flood, famine, traffic, and the police, and you’ll begin to get the idea.

My favorite African story actually happened after I left the country. An American executive took a job over there, and on his very first day, the newspaper headlines read: "Three Headless Bodies Found".
The next day: "Three Heads Found".
The third day: "Heads Don’t Match Bodies".

You can’t make this stuff up.

As a result of all this, death is treated more casually by Africans than by Westerners. I, and I suspect most Africans, am completely inured to reports of African suffering, for whatever cause. Drought causes crops to fail, thousands face starvation? Yup, that happened many times while I was growing up. Inter-tribal rivalry and warfare causes wholesale slaughter? Yep, been happening there for millennia, long before Whitey got there. Governments becoming rich and corrupt while their populations starved? Not more than nine or ten of those. In my lifetime, the following tragedies have occurred, causing untold millions of deaths: famine in Biafra, genocide in Rwanda, civil war in Angola, floods in South Africa, famine in Somalia, civil war in Sudan, famine in Ethiopia, floods in Mozambique, wholesale slaughter in Uganda, and tribal warfare in every single country. There are others, but you get the point.

Yes, all this was also true in Europe--maybe a thousand years ago. But not any more. And Europe doesn’t teem with crocodiles, ultra-venomous snakes and so on.

The Dutch controlled the floods. All of Europe controls famine--it’s non-existent now. Apart from a couple of examples of massive, state-sponsored slaughter (Nazi Germany, Communist Russia), Europe since 1700 doesn’t even begin to compare to Africa today. Casual slaughter is another thing altogether--rare in Europe, common in Africa.

More to the point, the West has evolved into a society with a stable system of government, which follows the rule of law, and has respect for the rights and life of the individual--none of which is true in Africa.

Among old Africa hands, we have a saying, usually accompanied by a shrug: "Africa wins again." This is usually said after an incident such as:

a beloved missionary is butchered by his congregation, for no apparent reason
a tribal chief prefers to let his tribe starve to death rather than accepting food from the Red Cross (would mean he wasn’t all-powerful, you see)
an entire nation starves to death, while its ruler accumulates wealth in foreign banks
a new government comes into power, promising democracy, free elections etc., provided that the freedom doesn’t extend to the other tribe
the other tribe comes to power in a bloody coup, then promptly sets about slaughtering the first tribe
etc, etc, etc, ad nauseam, ad infinitum.
The prognosis is bleak, because none of this mayhem shows any sign of ending. The conclusions are equally bleak, because, quite frankly, there is no answer to Africa’s problems, no solution that hasn’t been tried before, and failed.

Just go to the CIA World Fact Book, pick any of the African countries (Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi etc.), and compare the statistics to any Western country (eg. Portugal, Italy, Spain, Ireland). The disparities are appalling--and it’s going to get worse, not better. It has certainly got worse since 1960, when most African countries achieved independence. We, and by this I mean the West, have tried many ways to help Africa. All such attempts have failed.

Charity is no answer. Money simply gets appropriated by the first, or second, or third person to touch it (17 countries saw a decline in real per capita GNP between 1970 and 1999, despite receiving well over $100 billion in World Bank assistance).

Food isn’t distributed. This happens either because there is no transportation infrastructure (bad), or the local leader deliberately withholds the supplies to starve people into submission (worse).

Materiel is broken, stolen or sold off for a fraction of its worth. The result of decades of "foreign aid" has resulted in a continental infrastructure which, if one excludes South Africa, couldn’t support Pittsburgh.

Add to this, as I mentioned above, the endless cycle of Nature’s little bag of tricks--persistent drought followed by violent flooding, a plethora of animals, reptiles and insects so dangerous that life is already cheap before Man starts playing his little reindeer games with his fellow Man--and what you are left with is: catastrophe.

The inescapable conclusion is simply one of resignation. This goes against the grain of our humanity--we are accustomed to ridding the world of this or that problem (smallpox, polio, whatever), and accepting failure is anathema to us. But, to give a classic African scenario, a polio vaccine won’t work if the kids are prevented from getting the vaccine by a venal overlord, or a frightened chieftain, or a lack of roads, or by criminals who steal the vaccine and sell it to someone else. If a cure for AIDS was found tomorrow, and offered to every African nation free of charge, the growth of the disease would scarcely be checked, let alone reversed. Basically, you’d have to try to inoculate as many two-year old children as possible, and write off the two older generations.

So that is the only one response, and it’s a brutal one: accept that we are powerless to change Africa, and leave them to sink or swim, by themselves.

It sounds dreadful to say it, but if the entire African continent dissolves into a seething maelstrom of disease, famine and brutality, that’s just too damn bad. We have better things to do--sometimes, you just have to say, "Can’t do anything about it.

The viciousness, the cruelty, the corruption, the duplicity, the savagery, and the incompetence is endemic to the entire continent, and is so much of an anathema to any right-thinking person that the civilized imagination simply stalls when faced with its ubiquity, and with the enormity of trying to fix it. The Western media shouldn’t even bother reporting on it. All that does is arouse our feelings of horror, and the instinctive need to do something, anything--but everything has been tried before, and failed. Everything, of course, except self-reliance.

All we should do is make sure that none of Africa gets transplanted over to the U.S., because the danger to our society is dire if it does. I note that several U.S. churches are attempting to bring groups of African refugees over to the United States, European churches the same for Europe. Mistake. Mark my words, this misplaced charity will turn around and bite us, big time.

Even worse would be to think that the simplicity of Africa holds some kind of answers for Western society: remember Mrs. Clinton’s little book, "It Takes A Village"? Trust me on this: there is not one thing that Africa can give the West which hasn’t been tried before and failed, not one thing that isn’t a step backwards, and not one thing which is worse than, or that contradicts, what we have already.

So here’s my (tongue-in-cheek) solution for the African fiasco: a high wall around the whole continent, all the guns and bombs in the world for everyone inside, and at the end, the last one alive should do us all a favor and kill himself.

Inevitably, some Kissingerian realpolitiker is going to argue in favor of intervention, because in the vacuum of Western aid, perhaps the Communist Chinese would step in and increase their influence in the area. There are two reasons why this isn’t going to happen.

Firstly, the PRC doesn’t have that kind of money to throw around; and secondly, the result of any communist assistance will be precisely the same as if it were Western assistance. For the record, Mozambique and Angola are both communist countries--and both are economic disaster areas. The prognosis for both countries is disastrous--and would be the same for any other African country.

The West can’t help Africa. Nor should we. The record speaks for itself.

Good post, Bulldog, thanks.

Here's another example of how things are done in Africa: The last time I was in Zimbabwe, things were not going well with their war in Congo (although the radio of course reported great victories daily). They didn't have the air transport to bring their soldiers bodies home, so they solved the problem by bringing home just the heads.

Jame_Retief, if your name is a clue I can figure out where you're from, but where do you live now?

Say what you want, but Apartheid apparently worked....

South Africa went from a beautiful, peaceful (at least it looked that way) country with a good standard of living....to a third world shithole, thanks to Nelson Mandela, and all the liberal do gooders in this country.

Methinks it is a "cultural" problem.....

I thought to myself, "Hell yes I'd get the hell out if things were that bad." It would not take me two seconds to make that decision.

I read a pretty good article a few weeks ago about the projected food shortage in several African shitholes countries.

They predicted something like 700 million metric ton shortage for just one country. The numbers were staggering.

In fact, the articel ended by stating that even IF a daily airlift of food were to being immediately, they would still never come close to getting enough food in there.

The "solution" would require a HUGE amount of food to be produced in each country, and that is not going to happen.

The handle has been pulled and the flushing will continue.

Funny you would mention that, I read one about the AWB. It said if the ban was allowed to die, blood would run in the streets. They predicted spikes in crime and mass kaos.

And the other sad part of this is that even armed to the teeth, they're outnumbered. Sure, fortify your homestead, load up machineguns and rpgs...armor your land rovers... but you still have to farm! You still have to bring produce to market! Your 'neighbors' - the ones who will buy your produce are all around you, 24/7, being told non stop that their poverty and hunger is YOUR FAULT. Their military or just plain armed thugs have the initative...they can wait and attack you when you're asleep, or out on the back 40, or in town delivering goods....

They can come at you with literally hundreds of machete and ak wielding goons. You're a farmer. You gonna mow down hundreds of people? Knowing that even if (big IF) YOU COULD, they will still get you?

Africa is today what most of us have TEOTWAWKI nightmares about. Basic things we take for granted here simply don't exist there (or in most of the world for that matter). Guarding a perimeter is labor intensive; overthrowing the local dicatator and holding off marauding armed gangs is extremely costly merely in materiel.... no body builds 30 foot high walls around their entire ranch or property! But short of doing that or overthrowing the thugs and literally killing off the wolves there isn't any way to assure oneself of peace.

So they either abandon their land and emigrate or abandon their land and stay around, low profile like and eke out as humble a living as possible in as far removed a place as they can hoping for a better tomorrow. It's not like there are international airports to get to easily, or a vast network of paved roads to drive on either. Much of interior Africa is wilder than the wild wild west.

Did I mention white farmers (or any whites) are outnumbered 100 to 1 if not more? Fighting back (against who? anyone with a machete or gun? That'd be more than half the adult population) is not an option.

About the only thing they could do was congregate in one defensively location - say a port city or bay that could be made into a port, and make a last stand. But then they have to make a profit and sell goods or services to the surrounding population who have been told to hate their guts... again, not an easy thing to do.

In a way, they are now in the same situation European aristocrats found themselves in during the French Revolution - or capitalists in Mao's China.

The difference is, one of them is closer to the truth.

The similarity is both of them are written by the looney left. I believe little in the media, after you sift out the facts, little is left of most stories.

Bottom line, whether its White people in Africa or an old Black WWII vet in NJ, any .gov anywhere can and will take what they want under the color of authority. I expect this in the third world, I dont in the USA, but it happens here as well.

The point- Arm youself so you can make your own choices, know when to hold em, know when to get the hell out.
