Time to show my ignorrance. What benifit do you get by having a firing pin that is spring loaded for lack of a better term. I know that it supposedly (sp) prevents an accidental discharge when chambering a rnd, but is there any other purpose? ARs don't have 'em. I don't believe my M1A or AKs have them. Someone educate me.

It's just slamfire and drop protection. The AR originally had a potential problem with slamfires. The army looked at various fixes, including less sensitive primers and firing pins with springs. They finally solved the problem by making the firing pins lighter.
