I could be wrong.

You can get a replacement bulb for about 5 bucks at any marine supply store.

Is that right?  $5 for a bulb that will make that much light?

What type of bulb is it?

more than just swapping a bulb. HID lights also use a ballast

Yup, and that's probably the part that drives up the cost.

I really wish they would start labeling those things in Lumens as Candlepower is not exactly a "real" measurement.

Until someone managed to break it,  I had a 1000 watt GE sealed beam aircraft landing light, as
applicable to (among other aircraft) the C-141.   It was meant to run at 117 volts, 400 Hz,  but it
ran just as well at 60 Hz.   I used it as a sky candle on Christmas eves.

It was visible a long way away.  Often you'd see smoke rising from it as bugs would be drawn to it,
fly into the beam, get dazzled beyond belief,  heat up,  fall, and land on the face and then cook all the
way down to ash.    Put your hand in front of the beam at six feet and you HAD to pull your hand out
in ten seconds or less.     There's no WAY I'd ever want to have this thing shined in my eyes at
anything less than maybe a quarter mile.

It got broken so I don't play with it anymore.

We use one called "Thor" when running to our duck blind

When we turn on Thor, the heat it generates is amazing.
I have warmed myself in its beam. Don't know the rated
power, but it sure works for locating snags in the water.

Just watch where you set it at when it is on.  I have a friend who is a Game Ranger and about seven years ago he had a spotlight similar to yours.  He was using it one night to catch poachers and set it face down on his truck seat.  He got out of his state truck to talk to these people and wasn't paying attention to the light.  The seat caught fire and his truck cab was burnt up before he could get the fire extinguished.  If he works another 30 years and catches all 10 of the FBI's most wanted, he will still be remembered for burning up his truck with a spotlight.

Yes, its good when you need a lot of light.
Of course, after I bought my 10M cp light they now have a 15M cp light for the same price -- a bit bigger, and zaps the battery faster...

Actually, heat is not a problem with this...must be due to the HID technology used...I really dont know too much about it.   Hold your hand right against it while on...and it is BARELY warm.  The sun shining through your window is probably warmer.

My logic leads me to believe that such a low amount of heat means less energy usage which is what allows you to get such a bright beam for so long.  AND...it's a white light...not yellow like you see with a halogen spotlight.

This thing is truly unreal.

It's really stupid to spend $130 on a spotlight that will see very little truly practical use...but...DAMN!

I have no idea why I am facinated by flashlights and spotlights.

Okay, just to leave absolutely no doubt that I am a complete nerd in anyone's mind, I just left it out on my deck shining straight up.

Atmospheric conditions are a mild mist in the air.

I then, pathetically, drove a half mile away.

Beam was clearly visible, as was the muddled spot on the clouds above.  Were it not precipitating, I bet it would be a VERY clear spot on the clouds from 1/2 mile away.  Surrounding light pollution was really bad.

I am betting on a cloudy, though clear night....the spot on the clouds could easily be seen from at least a mile away.

The hardest thing to believe here is that despite my nerdiness is that yes, I do indeed have a girlfriend, and yes, she's pretty damn hot, and no I am not going to tell her about this...and no...I'm not posting pics either, you leering pervs.

I had a soptlight from us robotics it was a prototype that they were tinking of making for the mass market. I was asked to test it in the LEO field. I think it was rated at about 20mil candle power. That thing was great for cars with dark tinting on the windows. found that that thing shined thru the back window would light the inside up like day time, the tinting helped keep the light inside and really f...ked up the people inside. Downside was really screwed with electrical system and the heat would scorch the carpet and seats.

The ultimate in Gucci flashlights...I give you the Surefire Hellfire

The HellFire target illuminator is designed for use on .50 caliber machine guns, and can also be used as a vehicle-mounted or hand-held spotlight (vehicle mounting hardware sold separately). Its shock isolated 35W HID lamp has an output of approximately 3500 lumens, and is powered by either the included cigarette lighter/power plug adapter, or two 5590 military batteries. The machine gun operator can select between momentary and constant-on activation by using an included hand grip which replaces the trigger grip on the machine gun handle. Because of its small size (8 inches) and light weight (10 lbs.) HellFire also can be used as a portable, hand-held light by detaching it from the included mounting sleeve and using the integrated carry handle. HellFire’s runtime when used this way (and powered by two 5590 batteries) is approximately 8 hours. HellFire’s body is built from an aluminum alloy with a hard-anodized MIL-A-8625 type III finish. A 5mm thick multi-coated Pyrex® window protects the HID lamp, and an amber filter on a pivoting mount protects the window during severe weather or while in storage. HellFire’s aluminum comes in a hard-shell storage case that is weatherproof and lockable.
