Mostly for the 3rd shifters here...

I've worked 3rds for about 10 years now, but still have problems staying awake on a slow night.

Do any of you do anything out of the ordinary to stay up?

Whenever I work graveyard I take about a week to adjust, then its just like normal.  I dont like graveyard unless there are a lot of people up at the same time and place, I hate being alone as much as I hate crowds.

I am a shift sup. 1730-0600, and this week, due to Christmas, I have to work 5 12 hrs shifts.  I have been drinking the hell out of some seriously strong coffee to stay awake.

If that works like those yellowjackets/old minithins, that would put me in the dirt - messes me up good.

Sorry - I did miss "All of the above".

yellow jackets suck....expensive as hell per pill they were much more csaff then you need....some people are more or less sensitive to caff....most of thise pills have like 200 g because caff is so cheap....eph is expensive...you need to find a good balancing point or other wise you will just get the shakes and lose the edge.

Insomnia.

The real question should be "how do you go to sleep"?

I don't have any problems on 3rd shift, done it for 10 years.

I sleep when I get home, good and long, and stay awake all night. Not a big deal, but I know other people have a problem with it.

I'm VERY dedicated to my schedule tho, I don't mess it up or screw with my sleep cycles.

I've been either 3rd shift or a Night Shift since the mid-80's.

How do I stay awake?

As of late I keep a radio on the entire 12½ hours I'm on.  And for most of the rest, when I'm not busy I'm on the net.  Usually here.  When Arfcom gets dull I may read a novel, book magazine, whatever.  Twice a night I take a walk around the office building I work at.  Each time take a nice half hour.  And sooner or later there is something that makes me get out of my chair.
In the end I’m almost always just busy enough to stay awake.

And then I get home where I have trouble getting to sleep.

I don't drink coffee, don't smoke, quit caffeine.... so on slow nights I read..... mostly gun stuff or horror novels.

On my rotating 2 days off, when I get off work the first day, I tend to stay up all day until about 7 or 8pm...so around 24 hours.  Just so I can spend some time with the wife...but it's starting to wear on me.

I'm thinking after we buy our first house in May 06, I need to just keep a 3rd shift schedule on days off.

A stint in the military.

It taught me to grab sleep where I can and I don't need it all at one time.  Use to pull a 48 hours straight often.

College and finals will teach you the same thing.  Especially in grad school if your prof is a prick and uses you for slave labor.

I've been on mid's for almost ten years now.  When I need to stay awake I drink a few bottles of beer water, it's hard to sleep with a full bladder.
