I am looking for a battle rifle. I really like the HK g3 and the FN FAL. Which one is the best bang for the buck in accuracy, reliablity, and price? Thanks. What about Garands?

Good for its day, but I wouldnt take it to a gunfight knowing my enemies had M16s and/or AKs, especially if they greatly outnumbered me. When in that scenario and the shit hits the fan (your hide is comprimised), youll much more appreciate 20 round magazines that are quicker to replace than the 8 round clip in a garand; no matter how much you practice.

Maybe so. But I still woudn't feel undergunned with a Garnd and a bandolier of clips. I would probably reach for my AR first, but the Garand is a very effective weapon.

If I was living off the land in central Montana evading commies from Canada or California, I wouldnt hesitate to leave the AR15 at home. The Garand would be on my back before I could reach out, grab it, and sling it.

Since I don't like to have to deal with regulating the gas system to what ammo I'm shooting.... Gimme the HK.

The extra range the 3006 gives you should be nice. Not sure if you can do it with an AR15, but an M1 stock is a formidable North Korean clubbing instrument. Honest

You haven't shot a Garand much have you?
With some practice you can shot say 80 rounds faster with M1 than you can a M1A

I'm pretty much a believer on this - the Garand clip loads MUCH faster than any mag-fed rifle. Changing the mag is laborious, and the Garand can be charged from the prone without much motion.

If Im not planning on keeping expended magazines I think I would still have the upper hand.
Link Posted: 12/21/2005 10:04:06 PM EDT
I prefer the M1A platform, but of your choices, the FAL is the way to go.

I see Fulton Armory on par with SA Inc at best. They started out great, but have become just another commercialized gun company, cuting corners (such as the reciever forging process, Fulton make a cheaper cast reciever like SA Inc.) to make a buck. LRB cuts no corners, LRB truly makes their product of the best quality to the most stringent standards for the shooter, not their own bank account.

its funny how these aftermarket "battle rifles" never come w/ a chrome-LINED bbl for the $$$$s they are sold for

nowadays, i cant see any kind of battle/"assault" type rifle w/ out chrome

You talking REAL HKs and FNs or CAIs and DSAs?

For the real deal I prefer HK to FN.

For clones DSA FALs beat the shit out of any HK clone that isn't a custom build.

Forget the LRB, unless you have a TON of cash.

The Springfield I have is flawless.

Hmm... all this time I thought everything in their M14s were "USGI", that's a let down esp considering their prices.

Yeah, you can get 30.06 everywhere and it will kill everything, and it will always go bang.

Garands are hella cool, I'd advise getting at least one while you can still get them at the relative bargin they are now.

Of the two you listed, I'd go with the FAL first. I hear a lot of complaining about the recoil of the G3. (I've personally never shot one, but I AM picking a JLD PTR-91 up tonight. I'll report what I think later)

My FAL is hands-down one of my favorite rifles.
Link Posted: 12/22/2005 10:58:16 AM EDT
I really like my DSA Fal, however I just picked up a Springfield Armory NM M1A with TWR bolt and HR trigger with a very low round count, it just feals better. I love my Fal and I can rap them out and keep it on paper no problem. If I already had a garand, I would get it squared away with clips/ammo practice and add a Fal for SHTF.

What are some reasons people dont like the G3?
Link Posted: 12/26/2005 3:27:31 PM EDT
assuming its not an AR, I would say M1A

For 'Perfect world' reasons: AR-10

For what I actually bought: FAL

The AR-10 is, FAPP the perfect .308 rifle. The problem is that they are hella expensive, compared to a partskit FAL... So I have a FAL, and will get the '10 when I get cash...

As for the Garand & M1A, the gooseneck stock is far less comfortable than the more modern pistol grip design, and the reciever-bedded-into-stock thing is more trouble than it's worth when compared to the way things are done now... Finally... WOOD? On a gun... That hasn't been a good idea since 1947...

And I don't know about you, but everywhere I can find 30-06, I can find .308
Link Posted: 12/26/2005 3:54:11 PM EDT
They're both good but the FN is a better value. It and its mags are cheaper.

You must have a pistol grip. It scares the anti-gun sheep.
