If the people that banned the importation of 'non sporting' firearms why did they not ban any domestic gun they considered non sporting?

GCA of 68 added the sporting purpose clause and also banned the import of handguns that didnt get enough "points" based on a number of features.

Because Congress generally is subject to less stringent restrictions regarding laws that affect trade with other countries, and because they knew that domestic gun manufacturers wouldn't fight the law, since it didn't affect them directly.

That about nails it in the head. Congress wants to eliminate your competition why fight them? Rights of perspective customers dont seem to worry them to much.
