So I get home about an hour ago and leave The Brown Dog (Chocolate Lab) outside to do his business and I grab my newspaper to go do mine.  About ten minutes into it I smell something not quite right - coming from outside not that it didn't smell inside.  I go to the back porch to see Butte (AKA The Brown Dog) looking none the worse but as I opened the slider it was clear what was up.  The skunk smell was overwhelming, and while the fumes were overtaking me the dog bolted by me to his spot on the couch.  As I regain my composure, I quickly lose it as I realize he is upside down on the couch rubbing for all he is worth trying to get the smell off him.  After I escort him back outside; I quickly do a search on the net for skunk remedies. After some speed surfing and with my limited resources around the house I come up with a: baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, Dawn dish soap, and vanilla extract.  Yea that's what I said.  Into the shower we go, now if you don't thing the above concoction would make anything less than a foaming, frothing, smoking mess; you would be absolutely wrong.  Also if you think the dog nor I are enjoying this you would again be sorely mistaken.  Well after 15 minutes of scrubbing and rinsing, we are out and now both smell like a skunk with just a hint of vanilla.  The rest of the house, well I seem to be getting used to it.  If you are in my area you will see me at the store tomorrow - I will be the one packing out the Rug Doctor.

Good luck, it will wear off in a few days and you won't even notice it.

I made the mistake of shooting a skunk with a shotgun once.  This link explains skunk smell and why it is so damn hard to get rid of http://home.earthlink.net/~phildun/wsnEAD3.html

The smell is caused by a sulfur compound.  The Hydrogen Peroxide recipe is the only one based on chemistry and was developed by a chemical engineer that had his dog sprayed. But you must use fresh hydrogen peroxide as it isn't any good after it sits for awhile.

Here is a link with their version and instructions.  www.peteducation.com/isittrue/deskunking_recipe.htm

I feel for you, I have them around my house a lot.  It is the only thing outside that I am scared of because they aren't the least be inclined to run away from you.  They know their power.

I had my truck's "vent" blowing in outside air today on the way home from work....  And I drove past a skunk that was pancaked to the road.  I feel for you man.

There is a fly that will lay its eggs in the head of an ant and effectively control the out of control ant population.  I wish they could genetically engineer something to control the population of skunks and opossums.

Wow!! Not one bit funny. Have been there and done that, except it was my truck and it takes a while for the smell to die down. You and your dog hang in there, it will get better.

I agree with the tomato juice.

Just one word of warning... A white long hair cat and tomato juice equals one PINK kitty!!!

But the cat didn't smell anymore! Just looked funny as hell.
