Are those legal for anybody to own? You know the ones I'm talking about. The armored trucks that haul money to banks and such.
Link Posted: 12/20/2005 7:59:01 PM EDT
I am sure you could buy one.
Link Posted: 12/20/2005 8:00:32 PM EDT
E-bay......

Yes, they are perfectly legal to own, but you don't want to pay the fuel prices at the rate them heavy ass trucks use it....
Link Posted: 12/20/2005 8:02:12 PM EDT
I don't want one. I was just curious. I never see any old out of service units on the road. And I have never seen a used one for sale.

I drive a Suburban. I'm desensitized to fuel prices.

An armored truck might make a heck of a SHTF vehicle.

Hmm...

I bet you want to restore it and drive up to a bank and see if they let you have the cash.

Depending on the model, I would say probably anywhere from 8-13 mpg.
That's not that bad. I have a few trucks in my fleet.
The Kenworth T-600 with NTA-400 averages around 5.5mpg
International Eagle with Detroit series 60 11.1 liter gets closer to 6.75mpg
Chevy pick-up with 6.5diesel gets around 17mpg
Medium duty truck like that should fall somewhere in between. All my medium dutys are gassers and get about 5-6 mpg

Actually, they drive the shit out of them, till they literally fall apart.
Many of them are all rusted and been painted over.

w00t!!!!

I watched a show on dicorvery or TLC about armored trucks. Seems the bodies last for a couple hundred thousand miles, but the chasis gets worn out between 75,000 and 100,000. They replace the chasis and keep reusing the same body.

had a friend who worked for a armored service, he quit when they took a truck to a gun range. the truck was in an accident, and the company decided to show the employees how well they were protected. it turns out he said like half the people there said they wanted huge rasies after they saw how easily the trucks where penitrated.

according to him a 9mm fmj would go right thru it, and shot gun slugs almost went thru both sides, and a ar-15 did. he said the strongest part was the windows and the rear door. basicly he said the sides where just like stop signs but 2 layers thick

From the site that was posted earlier, check out the chart at the bottom of the page...

Notice anything odd it?

I always thought about getting one of those square box ambulances and customizing it for personal use. Replace the various colored lights arounf it with spotlights, you can put a couple benches inside, got storage space. IF you upgraded it to 4 wheel drive, it could be a SHTF vehicle.
