A safety crackdown on cargo trucks has triggered a four-day, 20km-long traffic jam outside Beijing, an official and state media said yesterday."It's hard to tell how many more days it will last," Sun Li, a traffic officer in Huailai, north of Beijing in Hebei Province, said yesterday. The traffic problems started on Monday, when officials banned trucks from using the Badaling Expressway north of Beijing after a heavily laden truck and a bus collided, killing at least 24 people, the China Daily newspaper said.
The ban has forced trucks to clog National Highway 101 instead, creating jams made worse by stepped-up weight checks in a bid to stop rampant overloading, the newspaper said.
A 25-year-old driver named Zhou Sanyuan stuck in the jam for two days told the China Daily that his coal truck was at least 14 tonnes over weight.Other trucks had been stuck for up to three days, the newspaper said.
Trapped drivers slept in their cabs in subfreezing weather and bought instant noodles from villagers who came out to hawk drinks and snacks, it said.
