How much of a pain in the ass is it to get granite sealed every year?  How much does it run?

It's every 3 to 5 years. The product is not expensive and you can do it yourself. I have heard that Home Depot uses a product that is cheaper and needs to be done every year. Don't know if it's true or not.

Then we went to a cabinet shop and the basically said Corian sucks

I wouldn't say "sucks". However, I would say overrated and overpriced.

and gave me a price $37 for Granite. Input needed please educate us...  $4000 for Kitchen counter tops  is a lot of money to me ....???? Hate to spent that kind of money foolishly.....

I have a dark green granite and am very very pleased with it. It is strong, can't be cut, is heat proof and looks fantastic.

My advice: Go with granite, but shop around and get lots of recommendations. My granite was done by a local company and is great. My brother in laws granite was not installed nearly as well an looks it.

I was set on Corian but the little lady held firm on granite.  We looked at Home Depot and were going that way when on a lark we looked at a granite specialist just outside Austin.  We got to look at the slabs of granite in the sunlight and pick the very piece that was cut into our counter tops.  I'm glad we went with the granite, and with the company we did.  The Home Depot sample we looked at was OK, but the stuff we ended up with is absolutely gorgeous.  I catch myself clearing and wiping down the counter top just so I can get a good look at it!  It is a little hard when you set a glass on it, but nothing like the annoying CLANK you get with a glass table top.

We actually spent a long time at Menards this week talking to the girl that deals with the countertops.
What she said, pared down to bullets:
Corian:
man-made
non-porous
will melt
can almost always be fixed, but it might be complex.  she mentioned actually cutting a piece out and melting one back in place.
mitered seams can be made nearly invisible

Granite:
natural
porous, has to be sealed
heat can still be an issue just because the rapid temp change could cause cracking

Silestone (referred to as quartz):
man-made
non-porous
heat can crack it

Personally, I haven't seen Corian yet that I thought was pretty.  Wife and I agreed Silestone would/will be our choice in the future.

Corian may be billed as nonporus, but it will stain, scratch, crack, burn and melt.

Granite will do none of that.

Granite counter top detail with Yankee Hill Machine BUIS.  Doesn't do the visual depth of the polished granite justice...

I have Corian, but I like the way that granite looks..
then agian if the rest of your house isnt as nice as the granite will be then its kinda pointless

we have corian tops and I made some english toffee over the holidays and dumped the boiling hot liquid into the pan right on the counter, and forgot the hot pads.

I left it there not thinking about it.  Later my wife shrieks and yells at me.  I come over and feel the counter and it's BOILING hot.  Hot enough to burn.

It didn't bubble or lift the counter at all. not a mark.  My wife was muy impressed and so was I.

So I vote for the corian.

Sealing natural stone (granite, marble, slate, etc.) is really no big deal.  If you purchase the right sealer a countertop finish will last an easy 3-5 years (less so for heavily trafficked floor areas).  Apply the sealer, wait 10 minutes then wipe off any excess with a cotten towel.  What could be easier?

I really like Corian counter tops - especially with the integrated/molded sinks.  But for shear beauty, nothing but nothing looks better than granite.

How long you have Corian? Does its scratch up? What color you have?  a light or a dark? They said sark colors show scratches so bad they recieve complaints...??? I don't know if this is BS or not????

Corian scratches relatively easy really, but it buffs right out, literally. A light abrasive cleaner and a scotch brite pad (or fine sandpaper) will do it.

Whereas polishing granite if it gets scratched can be a more intensive task.

This is correct... The worst part is that it stains... Corian that is.... Silestone is better...

Ask around for a local granite/stone shop.  There are typically lots of small timers.  I got quotes from my kitchen that were less than HALF of HD and Lowes.  There is a lot of granite coming in from China right now, believe it or not, driving the price down.  A lot of import granite is thinner than the "good" stuff tho.

Check ebay - you can see some crazy cheap granite prices.... but you need someone experiences to cut, polish, and join.... not really a do it yourself thing.

Thanks for all the input.....

We got Granite it was installed one week ago.... Got the Granite from a small granite shop that was referred to us by my wifes hair dresser... Damn it looks great!!! The smaller shop went out of there way for our business. Took 2 guys about 3 hours to install and sealed it. Sealing is a no brainer all they did is wipe on a clear liquid then wipe it off, they suggested to let it dry for 3 hours. We let it dry over night...

I'll have to post a pic....

If you like the look of granite go with that....

Corian, while it functions just like advertised...there is NOTHING that adds to a kitchen like real stone contertops...

One other way to go, which I think is better than Corion, but not as nice as granite is the manufactured quartz countertop stone such as Ceasar Stone.

Total cost was $4100 and change for 72 square feet of granite, and a granite undermount sink, installation etc etc..
Plus the wife got a new faucet (she never told me the cost) and I did all the plumbing myself. This was a pain because of the extra thickness of the granite and due to the undermount sink I had to lower the drain snub out about 4 inches. It wasn't that big of a deal but I was hoping I would get luckly and not have to do that....

Prices vary alot so shop around. We probably got 5 or 6 estimates and talked to the different salemen to learn all we could. This was the best price we got and the people where a joy to do business with, everyone in the company was great!!! The next best price was $4600 and the worst was $6200...

I'm really sold on granite and I'm going to look into buying some of the cut off pieces to make some shelfs and coffee tables.... etc.....
