what's the point of these so called "fire missions"? It's not like hitting an ONLINE poll is going to matter in life. Please explain if you actually think internet polling sways public opinion significantly (significantly is used here to mean anything other than chance)

Point -> to piss off sissy liberals

I would go as far as saying all the other polls conducted by the polling companies are useless too. Especially when they are done by the likes of zogby having insane swings as far as representation of voting public has historically been.

How would you grade Jean Schmidt?

What grade would you give Rep. Jean Schmidt for her first 100 days in Congress?

Who is this person anyway?

I'm giving her an "F" for general purposes.

Sorry.  You can Clintonize it all you want into it, say that she wasn't really saying it but passing along a message from a constituent, but she still implied John Murtha was a coward.

"Congressman Murtha is so well-respected for his first-hand knowledge of military and defense issues that he has been a trusted adviser to presidents of both parties on military and defense issues and is one of the most effective advocates for the national defense in the country. He is ranking member and former chairman of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, a Vietnam combat veteran and a retired Marine Corps colonel with 37 years of service, a rare combination of experience that enables him to understand defense and military operations from every perspective.

He learned about military service from the bottom up, beginning as a raw recruit when he left Washington and Jefferson College in 1952 to join the Marines out of a growing sense of obligation to his country during the Korean War. There he earned the American Spirit Honor Medal, awarded to fewer than one in 10,000 recruits. He rose through the ranks to become a drill instructor at Parris Island and was selected for Officer Candidate School at Quantico, Virginia. He then was assigned to the Second Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. In 1959, Captain Murtha took command of the 34th Special Infantry Company, Marine Corps Reserves, in Johnstown. He remained in the Reserves after his discharge from active duty until he volunteered for Vietnam in 1966-67, receiving the Bronze Star with Combat "V", two Purple Hearts and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. He remained in the Reserves until his retirement. This first-hand knowledge of military and defense issues has made him a trusted adviser to presidents of both parties and one of the most effective advocates for the national defense in Washington. At the request of Presidents and Speakers of the House, he served as chairman of delegations monitoring elections in the Philippines, El Salvador, Panama and Bosnia.

He was awarded the Navy Distinguished Service Medal by the Marine Corps Commandant when he retired from the Marines."

State Representative District 66 (Formerly District 77) 2001 through 2004
Population of 120,119
Amelia, Batavia Township, Goshen Township, Loveland (Parts), Miami Township, Milford, Union Township

Trustee for Miami Township, Clermont County, 1990 through 2000
Population of 34,000
17 million dollar budget
Employs 150 full/part time personnel
Full time fire/ems department, accredited police department, road department, park department, zoning department, information systems department, administration department
Five premiere parks, totaling almost 300 acres

In other words, she's never even held a real job in her life, much less served in the military, much less been a combat Marine with 37 years of service to her country.

Murtha may be wrong, he may be stupid, and I certainly wouldn't vote for him.  But he's no fucking coward, and Schmidt was dead-goddamn-wrong for saying so.  There are things that matter other than gun rights.

Standing up in full view of the press and the world and saying the army has become the enemy and is not able to perform it's mission in Iraq due to weakness is un-fucking-forgivable.  I don't give a rat's ass what he used to do.  I nearly drove off the road when I heard what he was saying.

I'm sorry.  I may not call him a coward as I don't know him beyond the public reports but I don't call what he did a stand-up act.  Pretty low and scummy I think.

The serving Marines I know think he is dead wrong.

However being a Col in the SMCR doesn't a military expert make.  The SMCR is mostly populated by officers serving in billets they don't have the MOS for, less than 1/2 are MOS qualified for their position.  The number one criteria for promotion in the SMCR for officers is willingness to travel in order to serve.  There are only so many billets so it normally means in order to serve you have to travel.  That automatically weeds out many officers since they are not willing travel sometimes across country to drill.   Beside observed Fitreps from drilling (how do you actually get enough observed material for an entire year with under 4 weeks of observation spread over a year?) the SMCR officers self written summary of civilian involvement is brief.  So if the good Col was a member of Congress that would be briefed at ever promotion board.  It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that someone who is politically connected and willing to travel to drill will get selected whether he has military skill or not.

Oh, I agree that the guy's completely wrong and I think his comments are doing damage to the war effort.  I realize that he's probably overblown his credentials, and I certainly disagree with his view of the situation.  I'm just saying that calling him a coward is completely unacceptable.  He's got two PHs and a Bronze Star with Combat V, and I don't think the Marines were as big on medal inflation as, say, the Navy.

Really depends on what billet he had.  Hell I know  guys who got BSM-Vs without ever recieving a shot from the enemy because they were high enough a rank and were in the right billet.   Without seeing the summary of action I don't know what he did to get the medal, but the time line looks like he wouldn't have been in a line company but more likely in a staff.
