It's all good - but that's Dr. Ass Hat to you now. In the end, it doesn't matter how many degrees you have or what GPA you got, but how happy you are with your job and the quality of life you have along with that job. I've met plenty of people that knew a hell of alot more than I do and they have alot less paper on their walls.
I think the final figure was around $65K in tuition. Undergrad was about $18K a year and I finished in 3 1/2 years. Got my undergrad living expenses by freelancing and designing LabView data acquisition systems for some of the research folk at the medical hospital. Masters and Ph.D. were both paid for and I had stipends to live off of. Engineering/Science grad schools are great in that sense, otherwise I would never have been able to go. |

One semester left with a basic 3.89gpa, and a 4.0gpa in my major classes. B.S. Economics. I am set to get both school and dept. honors, and already have two national honor society memberships(Alpha Lambda Delta, Alpha Chi) as well as I got the 2005 Wall Street Journal student acheivment award.

Magna Cum Laude, B.A. in Journalism and English. 3.98 GPA
Top student in my academic department John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio I hope to get my master's in Public Administration within the next few years. |
Amen. One more final and I'm finished with undergrad, just to go home to my local community college to do pre-med because I wasn't happy with what type of job my degree would have given me. I'll come back in two years with my pre-med 4.0, so tag for later |
Did you mean for that to sound like you think your better than me because I only had a 2.5 GPA when I got my degree in Electrical Engineering? If yes. Suck me If no. Sorry to post in your thread. |
BS General Engineering: 2.65 GPA
MS Industrial Engineering: 3.95 GPA MBA: 3.75 GPA FWIW.... |
3.92 SWTSU (studied too hard) - second highest at that graduation, one person had a 4.0
3.6 UT grad school of Business (had a lot more fun) |
+1 You particularly realize that the more education you get. Many people were the smartest kid in the room when they were in high school - but when they end up at a top-10 university, they quickly realize that everyone in the room now is as smart as they are (or smarter). Those who were the smartest in the room at college quickly discover that everyone in grad school was also the smartest kid in the room. |

I've got 12 hours left in a double major in political science and history. My current GPA is 3.78. When I finish I'll be fully qualified to be a greeter at Wallyworld!
Small world.. I went to Ohio Northern University and made a couple of trips to John Carroll for wrestling.. |
+1 FWIW, the "GPA performance varies between institutions" is dead on. |

Now that I've read the replys to my post, I now KNOW who the 2 smartest members on this board are(no particular order-- I admire both these guys):
Word to the wise...NEVER show off you brains. There will ALWAYS be someone smarter, someone better edumicated, and finally - someone who APPLIES their limited intellect better and makes a bazillion dollars doing so.Better to keep your mouth shut, sit back and gather info. Open your pie hole and we all know instantly how DUMB you are. LWilde It's all good - but that's Dr. Ass Hat to you now. In the end, it doesn't matter how many degrees you have or what GPA you got, but how happy you are with your job and the quality of life you have along with that job. I've met plenty of people that knew a hell of alot more than I do and they have alot less paper on their walls. Engineer [You have a great sense of humor. You knew I was just messin' with ya'] I would be proud to be in the same company as these two individuals. Both OUTSTANDING men!! Lawdog (P.S. I lied about my GPA... wanted to see who would get their ass up in the air and who would show how "intellectual" they really are.) |

Summa Cum Laude, salutatorian, B.S. Math & Physics, 4.0 GPA.

Blasphemer! |

It's not just all about money either.
One of the smartest in HS One of the smartest in college One of the smartest in medschool One of the smartest in residency Well enough that I could have done any residency I wanted. Surg, radiology, etc but went into family med, one of the lowest paying specialties. Anyway, if I had to do it over I would have went into either engineering or spent all that time and effort learning about the stock market, business, etc. If I put as much time into that as I did into medschool and residency I could probably retire a wealthy man by now. Learn about money and how to make it. Something for you young pups to think about. |
Well, he didn't say he graduated Summa Cum Laude. |
That is a serious accomplishment. Congratulations. |
Indeed - and to think the first time I met him, he was testing out a home-built supressor. I don't even want to think about what kind of fun he's getting into in NM now... |

Actually calculated my GPA by time:
courses after 12: 4.0 classes before 12: (notquitea cum laude) mein Gott was it fun. |
For the record...I have a friend (Don't you just love the way these start out? ) who, to the best of my knowledge is the one of the wealthiest men I know.
He used to sell cars. When his missus got pregnant with number two (of four, IIRC) in 1982, he joined the Navy. He had a BA from ASU IIRC. After he had a successful four year stint driving Sam's Ships around the pond, he opted out and joined Pfizer pharmaceuticals as a junior salesman on the upper midwest route. Think Willie Loman. He worked the Dakotas, Montana and the like. He did well and was moved to the Albuquerque area. He did well there and moved up to district manager. He continued to move around to more important disctricts and get promoted until he ended up at corporate in NYC. After that ticket punch he was sent to run one of the four largest geo-districts in the country. He now runs the biz for an entire 1/4 of the United States. THAT my friends is a lot of responsibility. He is compensated appropriately for his skills and abilities. How about living in a MONSTER $3.5Mil home on the 14th tee of the finest course in the Atlanta area? How would you like for your sixteen year old to shoot hoops with some of the Hawks and play catch with some of the Braves? a couple of years ago, he broke breakfast toast with the Veep...yea...Dick Cheney. Yet...despite their great prosperity, we remain fast friends and he is a GREAT person. No pretensions at all. No hubris or arrogance. No ego sticking out to trip over. I visited last Christmas. His missus had decorated their palace with some of the finest holiday decorations I've ever laid eyes on. I asked how long it took them to get it all set up and he said he didn't know: His missus called the concierge and they flew to Florida for a long weekend while the crew set it all up, including the 25' tree with the 10,000 lights in the grand living room. IIRC, she paid a cool $5K for the job. So ok...why mention this? I included all these details not be create envy...rather to show how a humble, bright, and HARD working person with a powerful drive to support his family to his max abilities can make it in the dog eat dog world of sales. My main point here is that education is USUALLY critical to success in any profession. That said, if you have the street smarts, and the basic intellect to go along with the personal drive, anybody can be moderately successful. There are some other keys...like being adaptable and ready to move (I have...many times ), a spouse willing to put up with the crap for the long term benefits and the ability to see the opportunity provided by those forks in the road that come along every so often. IF you arrive at that fork...AND you take the right path...success just might be yours. Recognize your inherent skills, get that education and GO FOR IT! Do it...and prosperity and [some] happiness just might be yours. |
A good friend of mine confirmed that with a great story. He recieved his undergrad from Texas A&M in microbiology with a 4.0. Got his masters from MIT and was at the top of his class. Was then invited to join a very prestigious research program that MIT had going. He thought he would be able to bring in some new ideas or insights and was feeling like a hotshot. Till he sat down with the 20-30 other team members and quickly realized that these guys were on another level that he'd never even seen. He described them as "scary smart" which coming from him means alot to me. EPOCH |

I know both Engineer, and Fizassist. Both great guys, and a pleasure to shoot with. And only SLIGHTLY smarter than me.....BTW, Engineer, you havent's responded to my IM, are you going out with us Dec 21ST for dinner?????Fizassist, will you be in town???????
Back when I was in academia I talked about degrees all the time. Now I work for people who have less degrees than the academics and are WAY smarter.
TUrns out the military makes people pretty freaking smart. shooter |
Interesting that you say this... I'm an engineer and thought if I could do it over again I should have gone into the medical field. My wifes a nurse and I found her books interesting reading while we were in school. My dislike of being around sick people kinda makes that difficult though. Criminal justice? My roommate was a CJ... Those were fun books to read for entertainment. Kent |

Yeah. Come on Doc. We're getting the gang together. You can watch Bro.mmsig229 go to town on a rack of ribs like a rabid caveman with an IQ of 50. It truely is a sight to see |

95% of Harvard Undergrad graduate with honors. Then again, who would want to go to Harvard for undergraduate coursework. For BBA their business school isn’t ranked in the top ten for ANY field. |

GREAT IDEA! |

lawdog, who the fuck cares what your GPA was in college. It MIGHT be relevant going for your first job fresh out of college but in 5-10 years no one cares. When you go to a Doctor's office do you ask what his GPA was in Med School? What are you going to do with a degree in CJ anyway? I can see it now....lawdog chasing a perp down the road yelling - "Stop in the name of the law! I had a 3.85 GPA in college"
This has my vote for the most self-serving post of the month. FWIW, I graduated Magnum Cum Louder from the Ron Jeremy School of Business, Long Beach, CA |

got all of you beat.
GPA: 2.137 Computer Science & Engineering. it's like golf, right? lower is better? finished today, and have the best job i could imagine. |

I'm going to be in the Rootstown area the 26th through the 28th. 'sorry I'm going to miss the dinner. I'm hoping I can make BF this summer (there will be a BF?). |

...I always notice that too. |
Yeah, that would be the same SLIGHTLY as saying that Feinstein and Schumer are SLIGHTLY anti-gun, right?
I have it on good authority that plans are in motion for one this summer (talked to Bob this weekend and he has found a potential place and willing host). |

3.97 bachelor's
4.00 master's both in mechanical engineering ETA: major |

I like you, but I hate you a little too. Just so you know. But my grad school GPAs are both closer to your figure than my undergrad was. I may even have a 4.0 in one program when I'm finished. :) Jim |

I hear ya. Not what ya think though. Lot of nutjobs, drugseekers and welfare losers. That is the down side. Doesn't take long to figure out why some of these people don't have jobs. Obnoxious as Hell, worse when they're sick. And the days of working for yourself as a physician are long, long gone. The Klintons saw to that. Be glad you didn't do it. My point really was that plenty of us didn't go in to things just for the money. HOWEVER, If I had it to do over I WOULD just go for the bucks and say fuck it. People ain't worth shit, take the money and run. |
If I were in it purely for the money, would have gone into finance, if I knew then what I know now, would have gone for medicine (the body is a stunning piece of equipment from an Engineering standpoint, the sophistication & simplicity of some of the systems pretty much rules out random chance for our development), although settling for designing things which protect & preserve life will have to do. As much as I respect my peers in Engineering, I am in awe of those who work on the human body, particularly those who do so under the (literally) life and death constraints of time.
(and the school has everything to do with the GPA, having attended a few, I can say with certainty that there are at least three distinct levels, possibly more - that became crystal clear at CMU. It's not just the admissions selection, but level of competition that pushes students to excel) |

Criminal Justice is a lame-ass, piece of shit, GPA-boosting degree. Everything you learn in CJ in 4 years, you get at the academy in 20 weeks!! What a waste of time!! Even law schools cringe at CJ degrees. They much prefer english, political science or some other crap like that. Saying you got a 3.85 in CJ and then making fun of others is pretty lame. You are a tool.
I did 3 varsity sports in college and got a 3.43 in business. (Almost as lame as CJ, but with more math) and I don't give a shit what you got. You were probably in the dorms all the time eating chips and wacking off anyway. |
Saying you got a 3.85 in CJ and then making fun of others is pretty lame.
Stink, I dare you to show me even ONE post where I made fun of others... double dog dare ya'. You were probably in the dorms all the time eating chips and wacking off anyway. I plead no contest |

Didn't you say the guy's John Hopkin's degree sucked? holy shit! What are you thinking?? Most of us here could not even be a janitor at John Hopkin's!!!
