You can find potions (!), scrolls (?), rings (=), weapons (variously represented by the pipe and slashes). It is basically a Tolkien themed, single person, turn based, random dungeon game. And there are dozens of variations including sci-fi, Zelazney's Amber series.... etc.
Jardinains - A great pong/breakout game. There's a new version 1.2 that I've yet to try, looks nicer and more rich than 1.0.
Betrayal at Krondor - The CLASSIC rpg from Sierra in 1993 is available for free. When Sierra released their horrible quasi sequel Betrayal in Antara (no relation to the Krondor storyline) they released Krondor for free. It was about a 12 meg zip file to download. I know it can be found on the web still. While its an 11 year old dos game, BaK is one of the best RPG's ever made. Also, it was a very early try at being 3d (polygonal landscapes and mountains) and the graphics really, aren't that bad.
Icy  Towers - This game is so basic, but I am stuck playing it! I love the theme music too.
Elastomania! - This is only a demo, but this is by far one of the most addicting and frustrating games I've ever seen.

King's Quest 1 - The Old King's Quest Classics remade by the Anonymous Game Developers.
King's Quest 2 - The Old King's Quest Classics remade by the Anonymous Game Developers.
Ultima IV - Arguably the best ultima game of all. If you have not played it and you like RPGs, you MUST play this game. It runs in DOS, but I think it works ok in a DOS box on modern versions of windows. I had a job once where I had to sit around for weeks waiting for something to break - passed the time with Ultima IV (and V which I owned).
Think Tanks - This is a pretty fun game/demo to play
Neocron MMORPG - This is a pretty fun game/demo to playHas a 10 day free-trial for those interested

Cars, tracks and such can be created relatively easy (compared to other, more closed, driving simulations). Pretty good simulation, with quite an established user-base, and lots of 3rd party cars/tracks.
Star Wars Games - A bunch of Star Wars Trilogy based games.
Sim City Classic Live - An online version of the classic Sim City game.
Apple II Games - A collection of 1100 classic Apple II games.
Project Entropia - free MMORPG. well it's mostly free you have the option of buying in game money with real world money and it makes starting out alot faster. the money system is kinda odd in that you can transfer game money into real money buy depositing it into your bank acount. not the best game out but realy good for a freeish game.

First...I'm afraid to edit it becuase something is fucking up my links....And when I try to fix it it ends up fucking up MORE of the links.

Second. Tribes fucking rules. I remember many a night playing online in my friends LAN. When you get 3 guys working as a team online, you can seriously kick major ass. Most players just play it as individuals. A 3 man team just wipes the fuckin floor.

*EDIT*
Ok, went and policed up the links again. Apparently I had a few hotlink errors way up at the top which for some weird reason worked in conjunction with a few hotlink errors way down at the bottom to cause me all of my headaches.
All is well.

Thanks for the links.

Don't forget abandonware, or software that is so old that nobody cares if you download it anymore. To find it search on google for 'abandonware'. Also check out www.the-underdogs.org/. I finally got to play Master of Magic (MoM) again.

The best way that I've found to play old dos games is to download and install DOSBox and D-Fend (a frontend for DOSBox). These programs translate the calls for the old soundblaster soundcards, joysticks etc. into windows directx calls. This way it isn't necessary to find the legacy drivers to emulate sb support.

Also, see www.truantduck.com for some really cool flashgames. They have a Asteroids clone called Belter that is a lot of fun, and way better than the original. They also have a 2D Robotech shooter that is fun too.

Betrayal at Krondor was released in 1993, but it is still in my top ten best games list of all time.  The graphics are dated, but I love the interface, and the storyline is the best of any RPG I have ever played.  Raymond Feist (the fantasy author who created the Krondor universe in his fantasy book series) played a large role in creating the story.  It's top-notch.

The game also allows almost total freedom.  It's divided into chapters like a book, and you have to complete certain tasks to advance the story and move on to the next chapter, but you can take your time and explore almost as much of the vast game world as you want before completing those tasks, or you can race to complete them and join in the urgency of the storyline.

The skill-based character advancement system is great and much more realistic than the traditional leveling-up of most RPGs, and the combat system is very good.

HIGHLY recommended.

One of the best Medieval games I've ever played... the combat system is great.  It's in beta and you can level to 6 for free.  First shareware/beta game I've ever paid for.
