O.K., I'm going to come right out and say it.  Bruce Springsteen, a.k.a. the Boss.  HE CAN'T SING!  HE SUCKS!  As a teenager I always puzzled over his popularity.  Still do.  All of the other guys thought that the Boss was it, tops.  The girls were wild about him.
Whenever I tell someone the hard truth, man you would think that I went into their church and pissed on the altar.  Their eyes bug, they sputter.
HEY, THE KING (IN THIS CASE, THE BOSS), HAS NO CLOTHES!
One Boss fan who I used to work with said, "Well, he writes great songs."  True.  Hey, I could  write a good song, but you would not want to hear me sing it!
My wife can not stand to hear The Boss sing? either.  Or Bob Dylan.  But Burnt Bob is a whole different subject.
So, is there anyone else out there with your musical eyes wide open?  Or do you all live in a state of Denial?

Edited, because I only know how to spell Dillon one way!

Remember when he was really popular?  God that sucked.  Have always HATED having to hear his songs.  And the way he wore that Telecaster, strum a couple cords and then just wear it again.  God I hate Telecasters.

OK, now I feel better. [:)]

First off let's not confuse the KING with the BOSS.[:)]

I like Springsteen but I agree he ain't much of a crooner. However he does have a certain style that I enjoy. I don't think he just hung the moon and I have often wondered about his cult-like following.

One must admit if you are a fan of rock music the quality of the singer's voice is not always the best attribute of the songs. I like a lot of artist who really can't sing. Dylan and Johnny Cash just off the top of my head.

Anyway, I like Springsteen even if he can't sing.

I am going to agree with you.  Everyone says "Born to Run" is such an amazing song and I listen to it and........does absolutely nothing for me.

Springsteen somehow got the mantle of being the symbol of the American working man, like the working class rock n' roll avatar.  He's got legions of rabid fans, but I will say that I've never thought he was great or special in any way.

I think he can sing, a lot better than other artists I like more than Springsteen (e.g. Bob Dylan and Neil Young) and it's nice to see there are other people that feel the way I do about Springsteen.  He's ok, nothing special.

Now I just know you guys think Neil Young has the most beautiful voice there is.[:D] mmk

But speaking of Willie Nelson, does any one here remember "BARBROSA" the Movie with Gary Bussey(sp?) as his wanna be sidekick???

Yes, I thought it was a pretty good flick. Willie Nelson is actually a pretty fair actor INHO. Remember his guest shot in Miami Vice?

I solidly agree that Springsteen's popularity is inexplicable. The only thing I can figure is that it must be a 'New Joisey Ting', but, then again, he sells (or sold) albums just about everywhere.

How many Rock/pop stars are actually excellent singers?

There aren't that many, folks.

And with todays electronic enhancements there are probably fewer good singers than we think.

P.S. Obviously, the Rap genre doesn't require singing talent.

Good songwriting, and a solid live band in their early heyday. I saw 'em at the Fox in St Louis back in "77 and it was really a good show.

Why hate Telecasters? Hello? The tele is the workhorse of all American music, and to dis it is like dissing the M1 Garand, or the AR15. Bruce played an Esquire - similar I agree. Forget him, what about Jimmy Page (STH lead was a tele), Billy Gibbons, all that classic Stax stuff with Steve Cropper, Albert Collins, Roy Buchanan, the Hellecasters, Keith Richards. If you don't like teles I can't take your musical opinions seriously. I have some nice vintage pieces, Gibsons, Pauls, Strats, and one old parts tele that kick ass. Go shred on your jap Ibanez or whatever, but don't be talkin' shit about the tele. [beer]

Just MO not a flame :D

Bruce was/is overrated, Apparently he put on a hell of a performance at his early concerts.

Neil Young is great, as was Roy Orbison, another dude with a weird voice.

Bob Dylan is one of the most influential songwriters of our time, and his rustic voice was fine until his motorcycle accident of 1967 (?) when it gradually deteriorated to the Donald Duck voice we know today.

These are only my opinions, but I know them to be the truth..

To be fair, I have heard some of Bob's old stuff, he was a fine singer.  But, he is very anti-gun.

I like him because he conveys the emotions of lyrics well, not like the preeners and posers that just recite the lines along with lame dance steps. His voice isn't good in a classical sense but it's a good rock 'n' roll voice. I seen past concerts and no one else I can think of that will go at full throttle fot 3 hours. His lyrics speak well of the hopes and dreams of the common man and the failures and disillusionment that sometimes accompany those hopes and dreams. He's not my favorite, but I think his music comes from a deep well rather than the deep pockets of the record companies' promotional machines. Having said all that, I'd rather see Britney Spear naked than the ol' Boss

Bruce was pretty hot in the 70's but beyond lame by the time Born in The USA came out. It seemed every album had one or two jewels surrounded by a bunch of turds. Can anyone actually listen to one of his albums front to back? I have a pretty high threshold for pain and I can't do it. But he did do some hotties! "Candy's Room" and "Open All Night" still give me maximum wood...

I hate to admit that he does have some good lyrics.

Yes, Willie Nelson definitely can act better than he can sing.

I happen to like Bruces music. I went though a few years where he went to the back of my playlist at home, but I still listen to his stuff.
Better than all that "alternative " crap they play these days. Whatever happened to a band with guitar, bass, drums, maybe some keyboards and/or horn? Almost none of the "rock" being played on the radio these days is really rock? And the singers don't sing...they moan and sputter their way through the song. Don't get me started on rap, either.
I think it's like the switch from vinyl to CD's...someone somewhere made the dicision that something wasn't "marketable" anymore around the time the "grunge" thing came in, and all of a sudden classic style  anthemic rock was passe.
And I heard the other day that todays kids consider Rock to be "old mans music" Geez.....

As far as The Boss sucking, oh yeah. Let's not forget Jethro Tull, The Rolling Stones and F**K those G*D*mn over-rated hippie assholes, the Beatles. Ever notice how when performers become huge and wealthy, they extoll the ideas of "life without possessions"? It's easy if you try. Or if you're John F**king Lennon(or Stalin or Mao). Sorry to rant, but classic rock is an excellent platform for the launching of socialist idealogy. All my hippy teachers tried to convert me, without luck. Did I mention F**K the Grateful Dead?!

I kinda like that "One step forward, two steps back" song. As for the Telecaster, I've owned two and traded them both for Stratocasters. One of them was a real ass kicker with two double coil humbuckers and a single coil, but the guy gave it a fret job and lowered the action so low it lost its playability. It had some prototype Mighty Mite hardware which was big in the late 70's in SoCal. Unfortunetely, most the the standard issue Strats and Teles these days are crap. I went through 3 new Strats in the early 90's because the necks were warping after a few months. And this is in a dry climate. The $500 Strats are still junk from what I hear.

I think it all goes back to the Beatles. Before then, there were songwriters who sold their songs to singers. Best of both worlds. Now we have singers who can't write singing their own stupid lyrics and good songwriters who can't sing a lick.
Bring back Mel Torme & Francis Albert.

I can't stand Bob Dylan at all.

I can just, barely put up with Springsteen.

And I can tolerate Willy. Mostly because he's an awesome song writer. But Willy does sound better when he does a duet with about anyone else. [:D]
