I guess that's how the death penalty works in Europe:
Voice your political opinion, and it's ok for authorities to shoot you.
Whereas here, execution after due process of trials and appeals is barbaric.

GENOA, Italy (CNN) A demonstrator has been killed amid clashes in the Italian city of Genoa where the leaders of the world's major industrialised countries are meeting for an annual summit.

About 80 people, including many from the security services, have been wounded and more than 50 people arrested. A police officer is critically injured although no details are yet known.

CNN's Alessio Vinci said the dead man was in his 20s but no more details had yet been released.

There are conflicting reports about the cause of the man's death. Vinci said some eyewitnesses had said the demonstrator was killed by a gunshot -- but he stressed these reports had not been confirmed.

According to other reports the protester may have been hit by a brick, or even a teargas cannister.

An Italian National Police spokesman said: "The demonstrator has an injury on his head. It is not clear if he was shot or was struck by a rock or brick."

Vinci said the "extremely violent and intense" clashes were continuing in a stadium nearby, with helicopters flying overhead and reinforcements being sent.

He added that the violence was caused by a limited faction of anarchists, who came to the Meditteranean city not to protest over the G8 summit, but solely to fight the police.

CNN correspondent Kelly Wallace said there had been no reaction from the world leaders, although U.S. President George W. Bush had been informed of the incident.

The clashes between police and protesters in the Mediterranean port town overshadowed news from the G8 summit itself, where leaders on Friday announced the creation of a $1 billion global AIDS fund.

Italian police used tear gas and water cannons to try to stop the militants breaking through a ring of steel erected around the talks' central venue.

Earlier on Friday, police detained more than 30 activists near the "red zone" as windows were smashed and black smoke rose from burning vehicles and rubbish bins.

About 200 protesters threw a petrol bomb into a local prison after breaking its windows before they were chased off by security guards.

At one stage water cannons were used about 300 metres from the Renaissance palace where the leaders of the main industrialised nations, including Bush, were lunching.

A Reuters reporter said a policeman fired shots into the air from his pistol in an effort to force back the crowds in a separate incident in another part of the town.

When somebody goes crazy on you, you have to protect your self, which is what the italian police were doing, but why kill the man?  I think rubber bullets or pepper spray might have been a better solution, instead of live ammo (unless the guy was going to hurt someone).

Just read the protestors are using rocks and firebombs.  Maybe Italy should review the years of kaos Israel has gone through with the PLO.  Geeee wasn't Italy one of those FU countries whining to Israel to go easy with the bullets?

You can clearly see the Carabieneri pointing at the man with his Beretta from the back of the car, if i saw a video of this, it might be better to judge. Either he was shot or he was caught by the jeep when it backed.

I got those time for these shitdisturbers! If the cu*t would have stayed home, he'd still be alive. He has got himself to blame, so any bleeding hearts out ther can go fu*k yourselves.

We all have the right to demonstrate in our beliefs, but when things get out of control the police have to protect themselves. I do not feel sorry for this guy one bit.
Hope he does'nt become a martyr. he shudda stayed home and watched it on the TV.

The guy laying on the ground is different than the one who was holding the canister.

Note, the guy on the ground has a different "shirt" on than the guy in the upper left picture wearing the wifebeater.

The dead guy obviously had never heard of Kent State.

You know,,,
Ohio State National Guard 4
Kent State 0

You would think that people would know the possible consequences of throwing things like rocks, bottles, 1x6's and small air tanks at people with guns.

Hello guys,
I am Italian now the wounded are about 170.
The guy killed was 23(extremist of the left) and the Carabiniere 20s.
The Carabiniere fired 2 shots of Beretta 92 just when the guy throwed the extinguisher...the 2 bullet hit the head of the guy under the left-eye and in the temple.

Both of you need to look again.  The guy on the ground is covered by the jacket that was around his waist in the first picture.  It is not a different shirt.  That is not his pants you see in the first picture, it is his jacket around his waist.  What's your point anyway?  Fuck him.  The guys in the Land Rover were under cornered and under attack.

Rubber bullets and other non-lethal weapons are why these idiots are doing what they are doing.  They are used to rioting and destroying property with no consequences except maybe a little gas or the sting of a rubber bullet.  He got what he deserved.

Don't compare this to Kent State.  The students were not attacking anything, were not rioting, and were peacefully protesting the war in 'Nam.  Even though I was in the military at the time, I defend their right to do so.  These punks in Genoa are the same assholes in Seattle and all the other world meetings.  I don't agree with some of the globalization stuff, but protesting is one thing, rioting is another.  Who funds these assholes anyway?  This was not protesting, there were rioting.  Screw them!
