If you are looking for good, intelligent metal, look no further than bands from Gothenburg, Sweden. Soilwork and Dark Tranquillity are the best of that scene. American metal bands are, by in large, shitty, because they generally lack knowledge of music theory, harmony and function. Most of these Swedish guys have been classically trained as well, which shows in their music. You can also check out some older (ie 1990s) Swedish bands like At The Gates, they started it all.
Also worth checking out are: The Haunted Darkest Hour Mnemic (though they are from Denmark) Brian |

Dimmu Borgir is amazing
Old Man's Child Hell Within Byzantine Haste the Day Premonitions of War Heaven Shall Burn As I Lay Dying Therion Trivium Mastadon CARCASS! The Acacia Strain Arsis The Agony Scene In Dying Days Did I mention you should get some Dimmu Borgir?! Most of their stuff is good...but god, Death Cult Armageddon has to be one of my favorite albums ever. |
|
I really liked Spineshanks first album. I guess it was the first, it had a cover of "While my guitar gently weeps". I heard some new stuff today on XM....lame, not heavy.
|
|
I like OMC better then Dimmu, But the Dimmu stuff with Galder is amazing!!

I love it when musicians try too hard to look tough. |

Curently, I am into Iron Maiden and Megadeth. Probably not to heavy for you deathmetal guys, but it's good for me.
If you like classic stuff, check into Motorhead, Lemmy is awe-inspiring. Edit: Iron Maiden really has something in it's lyrics that speaks to me and I just can't get enough. I also thing Dave Mustaine was never really recognized for all the contributions he made to metal. |
|
I'm surprised to see The Haunted mentioned so many times. They've been one of my favorites for a while now..they rule! \m/ I've seen them 3 times so far, wish I could see them again but they keep skipping or canceling the Minneapolis area.

oh jeez HUGE +1 . I really liked his stuff that he did when he was all smacked out. Good shit. oh and Clay Aiken too.... |

Ha Ha! I get to be the first to mention Iced Earth! If you like Iron Maiden, you'll like IE, and also I would like to second Nevermore--their new album "This Godless Endeavor" is flat-out amazing. The Haunted, In Flames, Opeth...all terrific. Lamb of God took me a while to get into, but they are seductively great too.
Strapping Young Lad! Pelican (not heavy metal, but still great)! The new Demons & Wizards album is growing on me, and the new Fear Factory and Mudvayne records are worth picking up. There is a ton of great heavy music today. It's not given much attention by the mainstream music media sources, but it's a great time to be a metalhead. |
|
Demons & Wizards!
I can't get over the cover of The Immigrant Song on that album, listen to it constantly! Glad I'm not the only one with a soft spot for epic metal! Kamelot's album The Black Halo is good stuff too! |
|
i'm about to watch one of their videos
i think i had them listed as one of my favorite bands when i used to listen to launchcast radio all the time. if it's who i think it is, i only heard maybe 3 of their songs, but i liked what i heard.
yeah, their first alblum was awsome. i just bought their second one a couple weeks ago... i thought it was pretty good, but"strictly diesle" wasn't nearly as hard as "the height of callousness". but it still rocked... once again, thanks for all the responses, guys. i still haven't made it out to the store, and i need to start placing orders online too since i can't find half of what i'm looking for at any store around here anyway. |

I just read this thread and was going to chip in with Iced Earth. They dedicate the song "Greenface" to an acquaintance of mine that is son of one of my retired co workers and the brother of a present co worker. He's a hell of a kid that went BACK to Afghanistan with one leg and a prosthetic device...one hard core warrior. |

what no GWAR?
I cannot believe 2 more people on earth have heard of cradle of filth besides me god they are horrible darn metal music channel on satelite plays them all the time I think they must pay them for the exposure Lately I have been listening to Rammstien , Black Sabbath, Static X and Prong |
|
Your METAL CARD was revoked the day you bought your first RAP ALBUM. Sorry |
|
|
I didn't read through the entire thread, so I don't know of anyone has mentioned Avenged Sevenfold yet.
I'll mention Atreyu as well. ETA: Fuck me Freddy I can't believe nobody mentioned A7X. City of Evil is a fucking great album. |
|
I can't really get into city of evil for some reason, sounding the seventh trumpet and waking the fallen rule though.
all the Atreyu albums are good as hell though. if you like some odd metal Dog Fashion Disco is great. |

Aww, give the guy a break......he's repented........ Another vote for Motorhead ("Lemmy IS God").... Iron Maiden any of Bruce Dickinson's solo stuff ("The Tower", "Chemical Wedding", Abductors") In Flames ("Touch of Red", "Only for the Weak", "Jester Race") Dark Tranquility (Lost to Apathy, Damage Done) NIGHTWISH -NOT your typical metal band- lead singer is female and was classically trained as an opera singer, but this gal can belt out a song.......they do a killer cover of "Over the Hills and Far Away" Armored Saint (DEFINITELY old-school metal...."Hanging Judge", "War Zone", "Reign of Fire") Another vote for Iced Earth Anything by Judas Priest HATEBREED!! |

ringworm, 25 Ta Life, bricklayer, Agnostic Front, etc, etc....
Death Metal? Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Macabre... goodness, so many I don't know where to start! |
|
My faves-
Megadeth Iced Earth Children of Bodom Dark Tranqulity Dimmu Borgir Emperor(THE black metal band!) Edge of Sanity(get Crimson and Crimson 2...amazing!) Early In Flames(the last few albums SUCK! DO NOT get Re-route to remain or Soundtrack to your escape..get Whoreacle or The Jester Race) The Haunted Nevermore Judas Priest(just buy Painkiller...CRANK IT UP!) Arch Enemy(Get Burning Bridges and Wages of Sin) Soilwork And if you REALLLLLLLLLY want to get your A$$ kicked- Morbid Angel Carcass Cannibal Corpse Cyptopsy The Bezerker NO insult to anyone, but Drowning Pool, Korn, Slipknot, and all this "Nu-metal" IS NOT metal! It's mainstream pop rock with a metal feel-sorry! |
|
I dunno man.. seeing slipknot live at ozzfest 04 was pretty impressive. Korn is its own genre...tho they have changed their style a tad in the last few albums. |

There is new metal that's good? Really? I can't seem to get into it. Black Label Society is about as new as I can get without puking.
I'll throw in a couple I haven't seen make the list yet as great metal bands, even though they're old. IMO, these are the cream of the crop. The Melvins -- Stoner Witch The Jesus Lizard -- Liar (Look out, this may spoil you for inferior metal) Sepultura -- Arise ACDC -- Highway to Hell I'll leave it at that. It's old stuff but I have a hard time coming up with anything new that bests that short list. On another note, if you're into metal, I have a couple of classical CD's that will just blow your mind. The best classical CD in existence is Horowitz's 1957 performance of Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto #3 in D minor. It's just unbelievable. I played it for my girl about a month ago and we both just sat there slackjawed and silent for an hour after it was over. Let your imagination run wild with the possibilities of that piece, I promise you won't be disappointed. I'd even go so far as to say that if you buy it and aren't totally blown away I'll paypal you the price of the disc gladly. If you buy it and are disappointed IM me and I'll compensate you for your loss. The other one to pick up is the Glen Gould performance of the Goldberg Variations. There are books written about this performance, it's never been equalled. Also see Prokofiev's more famous violin concertos. It was said at the time they were first written that Prokofiev sold his soul to Satan to be gifted with his seductive mastery of the violin. You might also want to check out a pianist named Liszt. He's another one. There were famous pianists that said his work was unplayable, it was so hard. If you're into virtuoso performances like Satriani and Steve Vai, and Van Halen to some extent, you'd appreciate the extreme nature of his athletic and brilliant work. I know a couple metalheads that found classical as a second home. Especially if you liked Dream Theater. |

Nightwish is sooo good, one of my favorite bands. They just weren't what it sounded like he was looking for so I didn't mention them. All of their albums are great, The Very Best of... has some of their best stuff and is a good introduction. Thats one of the few albums I play when I go to bed sometimes. |

Dope, Drowning Pool, Slayer and Ministry just to name a few. I like Disturbed, but the new album is junk.
