I have put about 500 rounds through my AR. I want to get a 16 in. upper. Can I use the same bolt and bolt carrier for both uppers?

Yeah you should, I do the same thing now. As long as the bolt carrier and bolt plus both receivers are milspec, you should not have any problems.

I would get the headspace checked.

Thanks for the info. Where can I get the headspace checked? Can Jimbo at the local gunshop do it? Or do I have to send it out?

I have been told it is best to have a bolt for each upper.

Definitely maybe if the headspace checks.  I'd recommend 'biting the bullet' and getting a spare bolt carrier assembly for the other upper; will save potential headaches.
