The insert was developed for the navy by H.P. White Laboratory to convert thier existing M1's to 7.62mm. The rifles were further modified with a plastic magazine spacer and the gas port was enlarged to 0.1065". This proved unsatisfactory and they later replaced all the barrels with ones chambered for 7.62mm. They tend to come loose and accuracy is not the best. Best to buy a new barrel chambered in 7.62mm, and have it installed by a smith. You can't just rechamber since the 7.62mm is shorter than 30-06 and would require setting the barrel back and shortening the front handguards. You already have a shorter barrel and hand guards since you have a "tanker". A good book on the Garand is "M1 Garand and the M1 Carbine" by Bruce N. canfield. Good luck
