I have had M-60 barrels white with live ammo and red and orange with blanks. As for seeing the bullets going down the barrel, they are moving at 2700 fps inches from his face, pretty good eyes. But I bet the shot caused the barrel temp to change.
I had an AG light a cigarette off of a barrel once.

I saw an AN-M2HB .50 with a glowing barrel once, that was impressive. It was a nice deep red.

In the Dillon video Machinegun Magic, they shoot a Browning .30 until the muzzle glows white, so it can be done.

So, he's not joking.

I don't know about the temper. I'm not a metallurgist, I was a machinegunner. The chambers are stellite lined to help prevent bore erosion. They all worked fine next time we needed them. Maybe it IS alien technology. But when you fire a 300 round burst of tracer and another 1200 4 in 1 mixed in about 10 minutes time, the barrel gets hot!

BTW, the fifty had 1000 rds, 10 boxes, of ammo that were fired that night. The happy crew is shown below.
