Hey,

I heard someone say a few days ago that the
law about only having three evil looking features on a rifle is due to expire soon,
So we can buy new Pre-Ban's again - or is this just BS?

Thanks

if i remember correct, the 1994 'ban' expires after 10 years (2004) and has to be resigned by the Pres at the time.  but it is a election year and you'd bet that will be bad press, so don'e expect Bush to let it expire.

this sound right, anyone?

The 94 crime bill was set to expire in 10 years, meaning in 2004 we should be able to get our hi caps and "pre-bans" back to a full time deal.  However, given that 2004 is an election year, it will be interesting to see what happens.  If they extend it and bush runs again, none of the gun-owners will vote for him.  If he doesnt extend it, then none of the soccer moms or tree huggers will vote for him.  Well, atleast thats what would make sense to me.  I do think that gun-owners would far outnumber tree huggers and soccer moms, but who knows.

BUT, hopefully Bush will also know that if he resigns it, he will lose the election b/c he will lose millions of votes from gun owners.

Only if Schumer, Feinstein, McCain & Boxer all are kidnapped by foreign terrorists and held for the next few months.
Then and only then will the AW  ban sunset.

With the soccer moms out there, our Republicans will not try to sneak this one through.

Best case scenario, the re-instatemnt gets attached to some major spending bill, the Republicans hold it up in filibuster and we get a few months of fun guns.

It's VERY important we begin our share of trying at least to sunset the illegal AW ban.  We can't just say Aw screw it, it's an election year.  Don't you think that was part of the Nazi's plan in the first place?  The Anti gun Nazi's are hoping we will become complacent.  We MUST NOT lie down in 2004.  We must let our voice be heard, as it is the voice of freedom and Democracy.  We responsible gun owners are just about the only true red blooded Americans still left.  And I know as long as I am alive, I will defend what my forefathers and my actual father died for, just so scum like Rosi O can can talk her trash and stuff her ugly face.

Sunset in 04?

Never happen...

Between now and then, watch how many more workplace/school shootings we have.  Bet we have one very close to the vote to renew(if they have one...).

You will be lucky, very lucky to hold on to what you have now.

Bush is trying to get the importation of high-cap mags banned.
Do you think he is going to legalize domestic production in 3 years? No way!
Bush isn't gettin my vote in 2004 anyway. He supports what he calls resonable gun control. WTF is that?

Why vote for a candidate who is going to take away your rights to appease(sp) a bunch of socialists!

BTW, I remember reading during the election that Bush wanted to outlaw "machine guns". Can anyone confirm this?

I voted for Bush in the hopes that he would get some good judges in. If he signs the AW Ban then I will go libertarian and let the chips fall where they may.  I refuse to be the Repubs dog and vote for them just because the alternative is the Dems.  If the Dems get in, things will come to a head fairly quickly - and maybe that is what we have needed all along.

Really?  You'd vote for the Democratic candidate instead?  Bush will be counting on the fact that you are more afraid of them than you will be angry at him for resigning the bill.

Troy, I am offended that you would even post that.  The last thing, THE LAST,  I would do is vote for a Democrat.  Don't be ridiculous.  No, it wouldn't even be that last thing.  If it came between voting for an AW ban-supporting Dubya or a Demoncrat, I WOULDN'T VOTE!!

What I meant was, If George W. resigns the AW ban, I will vote Libertarian, or Constitution.  I hoped you would have assumed that.

Vote Democrat....ha ha, your funny.

EVERYBODY LISTEN UP!!!
Bush has already said he supports the Assault Weapon Ban many times. His AG Ashcroft says he supports it and during his confirmation hearing he said he believed that the Assault Weapon Ban and the Brady Law are Constitutional.

The law will sunset. But there will be a new law that will probabbly be worse the the 94 Ban.

[;)] Is that finally going to be the line in the sand?  [;)]

Serious now.  It will sunset.  We all just hope they won't put something worse in place.  Many states already have put more restrictive laws on the books which do NOT expire.  We need to work NOW to put pressure on everyone to NOT pass anything more.

and this one  "Background checks at gun shows and pawn shops
Expand ‘instant check’ system.  Governor Bush believes the instant check system is the best way to keep criminals from buying guns at gun shows and supports changing federal law to give gun show sponsors special access to the National Instant Check System to conduct checks on behalf of non-licensed vendors."

"Supports Juvenile Assault Weapons Ban

Semi-automatic assault weapons ban for juveniles.  This would extend the current limitations (subject to the current exceptions) on youth possession of handguns to semi-automatic assault weapons."

also
"Supports ban on importation of high-capacity ammunition clips.

Include imported high-capacity ammunition clips to current ban.  Governor Bush supports extending the current ban on high-capacity ammunition clips to include those imported from foreign countries."

he would need the 94 CB to do this

Ok you guys, I'm getting sick of saying this, so pay attention.

First, don't let the hoplophobes define the language of this issue.  The ban on semi-automatic rifles (not assault rifles) and standard-capacity (not high-capacity) magazines expires on September 13, 2004.

The important election year is 2002, not 2004.  Whoever gets elected to Congress in 2002 will determine whether or not the ban dies, is extended, or becomes permanent.  If you want the ban to die, go to work next year for the campaigns of the pro-RKBA candidates (especially Senators) in your state, and let them know exactly why you are doing it.  Believe me it does make a difference in how they vote.

If there are no good candidates, give $$$ to one outside your area.

Several recent events do give us cause for optimism.  First, gun control is being given the credit/blame as the "swing issue" which gave the states of TN and WV (and thus the election) to Bush.  He will not want to risk alienating those voters less than two months before the Presidential election.

Second, the reaction of the Bush administration to the school shooting in Santee.  Instead of impassioned pleas for more gun control, trigger locks, closing the "gun show loophole", waiting periods, etc. that we've grown used to over the last eight years, the administration is pushing to address the real problem - finding out what drives kids to commit this kind of violent and evil act.

Third, Attorney General Ashcroft recently published his opinion that the Second Amendment protects an individual right.  While he can't make laws directly, I'm sure Ashcroft can give Bush plenty of advice on this issue.

Also, Cheney is VP.  I'm sure you don't need me to remind you of just how hard-core pro-RKBA his voting record is.  He'll also be advising Bush.

My prediction is that Bush doesn't want to be put in the position of having to sign or veto this bill, so this is how it will play out:

The Senate will pass legislation extending the ban or making it permanent, especially if the Democrats retain control of it.  If it's Republican then it probably won't get out of committee.

The House will remain Republican after the 2002 elections, especially since NY and IL lose one member each, and TX will gain one.  The House leadership will feel heat from Bush not to let the bill go to the floor for a vote, so the bill will die in committee.

I am just hoping is what George Bush does do is say "Look we should ban importatation of high capacity magazine becuase there is no need to import the magazines when we can make them right here in the USA, Besides mags made in the USA give jobs to workers in the USA."

Yeah like that would happen. But then remember Politians wil tell anybody anything they want to hear to be elected.

We can bitch, piss and moan, wring our hands till they fall off or.......DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!. Ask yourselves "how many gun owners are there in this country" then ask yourselves "how many are actively involved in the 2nd ammendment issue". Those who just sit around and bitch are doing us no good. The gun owners far outnumber the "soccer moms" and "tree huggers". But they wont get off thier asses come election day or, more importantly, before election day. It is a proven fact that grassroots efforts can and do make a difference. If Dubya is absolutly bombarded with e-mails, letters and phone calls regarding this issue I guarandamnty he will have no other choice but to listen. If everyone remains silent or just bitches about it on this board, then the doomsayers are engaged in self-fulfilling prophecy. I, for one, won't just stand idly by and let some pencil pushing politician who can't tell the difference between an AR-15 and a Ruger 10-22 tell me what I can and can't own.

I'm with hoejtfl and Troy on this one. I decided on the last election I would vote for the Libertarian Party for now on. I would not be able to live with myself any longer voting for Republican and watching them pass more and more stupid laws. Whether there more laws restricting our gun rights or more taxes I'm tired of the Republicans. They are professional politicians and their platform is weak. They have Republicans all across the political spectrum. Republicans are not our friends! How many Republicans have you heard saying we should get rid of the ban?

I wouldn't be optimistic about the NY seat- but that's just another reason to get to work supporting our RKBA candidates.
We probably won't get a candidly pro-RKBA candidate to replace Schumer, but just getting rid of him will be good enough.

Don't vote party line. Vote where it counts. Both suckers anti-RKBA? vote libertarian. One of them is a Schumer or Feinstein and one just doesn't care? vote Republican just to shut up schumer.
