I want to shine a light on the great divide that I think is developing in this country, between the LEO and the civilian populations.
Please read this article posted by Imbroglio, www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?id=33031#lastPost and then come back and answer these two questions: 1) Are you: a) LEO b} civilian 2) Do you: a) condemn the officer's actions. b) defend the officer's actions. I'd like to keep the replies limited to simply answering the questions until we get a good mix of LEOs and civies replying. However, if you do feel the need to qualify answers or flame me, have at it. Edited to add url. oops! [:)] |

1) B
2) A Shoot my dog, you may as well be shooting at me. Edited, cuz I ain't LEO |
|
A
A But with a caveat. Shooting the dog may or may not have been justified (I have run into many, many aggressive dogs in backyards, and have yet to shoot, or even use OC on one. Usually, not showing any fear you can get the dog to back down, peacefully). The officer responsible for them being at the wrong address needs to be disciplined, if that is appropriate given all of the facts and circumstances. |
|
Shoot my dawg, shoot me. Same thing.
I'd protect my dog no matter what, and I believe that my dog believes that too. I believe that 13 years of faithful service would entitle anyone to believe that you would protect them as well as they've protected you. Tell a K-9 officer that 'a dog's just a dog!' 1.)B
2.)A - STRONGLY A You shoot my dog, or even point a gun at him, and you are pointing a gun at my family. And I will defend my family with lethal force if need be. So don't try it.......and learn how to read a map!!!!!!!!! I'm not a PETA freak or anything, but you can't go killing whatever whenever and believe it is alright because they are "just animals". Just because we walk on 2 legs doesn't entitle us to any special treatment. Look what we have done to this world that we all must live in. At least those "animals" can live in harmony, can co exist, without the needless hate and pain. Don't try to tell me that my dog doesn't deserve rights, because I would trust very few people to watch my back, but I wouldn't give a second thought to trusting him with my life and the lives of those that I love. Sorry, got a little off topic, and I know a lot of that doesn't ahve anything to do with this situation, but I feel that in this instance, the officers where too quick to shoot, because it was "just a dog". I can tell you that if it was a guy with a knife, which he would have had to get close to the LEO's to use, just the the dog would to bite, they wouldn't have shot him. |

1. B
2. A have some friends in LE but this is not good PR for LE. if i were the father of the family which owned the dog i would definitely sue for the value of the animal for rightousness sake. And to buy my kids another dog!! |

2. A Deadly force is the last level of self defense, unless you feel that no other method will work or are being attacked with deadly force. IMHO a dog barking to protect his property or owners is doing what dogs do. If the dog was displaying signs of rabies I would agree with the Deputies actions. Like natez said. Most dogs will back down if you stand your ground. If they physically attack you then all bets are off. In this case the Deputy based on the limited info was way out of line. But..there are always 3 sides to a story..yours, mine & the truth. |

1. civilian, who also happens to be a peace officer.
2. condemn |

Former A
Won't pass judgement with only one side of the the story. sgb |

This is shooting my thesis to heck. I figured the LEOs on here would make up all sorts of excused for shooting the dog. I guess I may owe a round of apologies before this is over. [:)]

1. A
2. Won't pass judgement without more information. There's always two sides to every story. Rule #1. |

A.
Tough call how was it the wrong address? where was the screw up? Was it a place that posed a threat? Where there reports of aggressive dogs at the proper address? It isn't fair to any concerned to judge without the whole story! |

1. b
2. a My dogs are part of my family, attack my family and I will attack you with extreme prejudice. |

2.(A) If all the dog was doing was barking at them, not attacking or biting, they should have only maced it. [:(] |

A I would like more information, call this a tenative condemnation. critter_FR I'm sure it's just my view, and if I'm wrong I apologize beforehand. Your opinion of all LEO's would lead me to believe that you're still a punk! I cannot support what these deputies did. But to condemn all LEO's is too big a generalization. |

That would earn me a 30 million a year contract with the Yankees if it were my batting average. [:)] BTW, only about 10% of the civies defend the shooting. |

1. Civilian
2. Condemn the shooting. My old lab was my hunting buddy. He always got the last bite of my sandwich, last gulp of soup, whatever scraps of meat I had, (the entire Thanksgiving ham, once). He was my hunting buddy and loyal companion. *NO ONE* shoots my people or hunting dog and gets away with it. I am genuinely frightened when I think about what I *would* do about it. --------- Make mine a blonde Swedish Mauser. |

No I wouldn't have convicted someone in a court of law based only on what was presented. Nothing is simple. Too many people with too many opinions for anything to be simple. |

B Awfully easy to MMQ the incident. The officer reasonably believed he was at the right address when he shot the dog. I've been on some calls where I was pretty unsure about the dog and would have shot the dog if the incident had gone downhill much further. I am not required to be bit before I decide to shoot a dog. Most places require that loose dogs be under the immediate control of the owner. This one obviously wasn't. |

View Quote Here is a quote from the article you apparently didn't read: When they entered Charley and Beth Hatch's fenced-in front yard on Sherburne Avenue, they ran into Gwennie, who began barking loudly at them. View Quote Note the "fenced in front yard." Now, you say,"Most places require that loose dogs be under the immediate control of the owner. This one obviously wasn't." Even if the LEO "reasonably believed he was at the right address," do you think it would have been reasonable to use OC instead? I wasn't there, but, Christ, this sure sounds trigger happy. The dog was confined to his own yard--restrained enough for most of us. As I said earlier, do this crap at my address and I shoot back--even if it's days later. Call me a vindictive asshole if you want--don't mess with my dog/wife. We have come a long way in the wrong direction when LEO's enter property to serve a warrant over a bad check and begin by shooting the family dog, wrong house or right house. Hell, before we know it we can expect LEO's to go on private property and shoot the family dog and then the family's 14 year old boy--in the back as he flees. Then the gov.'t will rush in to protect the LEO because "he was just doing his duty." A little of this goes a long way. |
