Gentlemen:
With all due respect, the top TWO guitarist in the world are 1. Keith Richards 2. Eric Clapton.
Number 3. would have to be Ron Wood.
For Number 4. I would say Al DiMeola,
and for Number 5. Christopher Parkening
Number 6. would be the guy who played for Lawrence Welk back in the 1970's.

OK, let's explain WHY are top 5 picks are the best, here are my choices and why I chose them:

1.) Jimmy Page - some of L.Z.'s work I really dont care for, but despite that the lead track is always impecable sounding

2.) Eric Clapton - surprisinly, he's actually a better blues performer than he is rock; he does both with flawless style

3.) Carlos Santana - the man with those magic fingers...he can do so many things and emulate and entire spectrum of sound characteristics

4.) Mark Knofler - the lesser known guitarist of Dire Straits, who you can identify out of any other guitarist in saying "that sound can only be Mark Knofler"...he almost mixes acoustic and electric into one

5.) Ritchie Blackmore - LISTEN TO THIS GUY, he worked with Deep Purple, and now has a kind of renessaince-faire band called "Blackmore's Night".  Similar to Carlos Santana, in that he can improvise the scale and throw in about 30 notes in less than a second.  Absolutely awesome sound, he deserves a top spot.

Favorite?

I'm not a musician so everyone I pick is because I just think they sound good (though I do have somewhat of a rudimentary understanding of music theory.) Anyway, my living favorites are:

Alex Lifeson (Rush)
Adrian Smith/Dave Murray (Maiden)
Kerry Livgren (Kansas)
Brian May (Queen)
Lindsey Buckingham (Fleetwood Mac)

There are plenty others, I had to narrow the list down to 5 LOL

Steve Vai
Jimi Hendrix
Yngwie Malmsteen
John Petrucci
Jeff Beck

My 5 would be:
1) Jimi Hendrix
2) Randy Rhodes (OZZY)
3) Angus Young
4) Kirk Hammet
5) Steve Vai

If you have never seen the movie "Crossroads", rent it Steve Vai puts on a hell of a show in that one. [:D] Milldude
