I always build the entire bike without any paint work (dry run mock-up). Making sure everything fits. Then take it all apart and parts sent to the painter. I always get the frame sand blasted before paint or powder coating. That takes care of all the rust. Wiping the frame off won't do the job. You'll have rusty finger prints all over from pre-assembly. I'm sure you'll have a blast with the build and later riding. Colt-SBR |

I know shit about choppers, but I have always liked the blued "discolored" pipes. Shows what I know... |

... Work in process now! - more history added in original thread today |

bwah Ha Ha Ha.........famous last words. |

... thanks for the vote of confidence little brother |

What color(s) are you thinking
Please tell me simply black on black. |
I think you need a "Theme" name for this project.
Chopper Project is just not catch'y enough. Take your time and make it speical, anybody can just slap a kit together. Good luck on the build, tagged. |
You'll like it. S&S is way better than the RevTech engine. Another question - As this is a 'from the manufactuter kit', does this alleiviate the problems of titling and insurance that building a ground up sled usually has? |
No problem! |

It looks like you're gonna have a lot of fun putting that together. I'm jealous too! |
... Damn, once again, a younger brother of mine makes me eat my words (first "problem" encountered tonight - see 1st post, 1/11/04 edit) |

Winston_Wolf,
It is most apparent you shall enjoy the ride, for it will be a beaut, nothing can compare to what one accomplishes with their own hands. You are to be commended for your diligence! I do have a question if I may? Any modifications to the engine? |
I'm schwangin with you, WW. Getting ready to start my own.
Best of the beast to ya....... |
... Not this time around. The NIB, crated S&S 96 w/Super "E" carb with is rated @ 101HP, so it should get along OK. Maybe after broken in I'll tinker with the mill a bit |
Wise move, if I may 'type so', give it hell for a year or two. Please allow me to state the following, nothing is more exhilarating that smoking a crotch rocket off the line than a custom chopper. (This 'typed' as one who does have an addiction for crotch rockets but, has seen both sides of the ride). Damn, I hope the term crotch rocket still means the same as it did a few years ago? I wish you well and much happiness with your pride and joy! |

Very, very sweet project WW. I'm not going to tell you to take your time, test fit, all that jazz. I think you already got the mindset and the mad skilz. Have fun and congrats!

DUDE!!! WOW! Nice bike , glen! |
... Boy howdy, you aren't kidding! I sure hope to join you on a ride soon HRGlen |

HRGlen,
Can you post another link to the website with your toys on it. |
Is it going to be tough to get out of the basement when fully done?
bystander.....my stuff is here
... Thanks for the great website HRGlen, you have some damn fine work accomplished there! (some new pix and update in original thread) |
WW, you should be most satisfied with your progress to date. ::Golf clap::
I do have a question if I may, not to hijack your post by any means? Why are most 'new choppers' still using conventional styled front forks (shocks)? I would have thought inverted shocks would have caught on by this time. |
... Inverted shocks are a nice option ($400) for some, the trend just hasn't taken hold for me. I like the nostalgic look. Not exactly certain what the advantages are one way or the other. www.bigbearchoppers.com/bikes/venoms/venom_chopper_upgrades.html# (Inverted forks below) |
I'm shaking my head sadly because I can't afford to build my own at this time.
But I'm tagging this thread to watch the progress....that looks like one sweet ride. |
Lookin' good so far, WW. As for me, I like the traditional look. When I rebuilt my bike, I kept everything stock. Here are some pics of the work I did during the rebuild and the final product. Bike pics.
As for the engine, I had to rebuild the top end a while back and had the option of hot-rodding it, but decided against it. I did, however, go .005 over on the pistons, had the cylinders machined to match them, Andrews EV-30 cam, and a little extra shim under the valve springs. It kicks ass without getting me into too much trouble. |
Handling / ride comfort, (less inertia), nothing more. If I may |
Sure is nice to see we have a lot of scooter people here at AR15.com.
Winston_Wolf You've done a lot of work is a short amount of time. Lookin' good. I guess it's a good idea to buy a bike kit. You get every thing you need. I build 'em one piece at a time. It takes awhile to collect all the parts. Colt_SBR |
Good accomplishments so far, WW. I can almost hear the thunder.....
Oh man! I'd love to do something like that! Guess I'll have to wait until I get some more schooling under my belt and a much better job.
One of the bikes from Walz would be cool too. To bad they dont post prices on their site. |
He's too bullheaded to do that. I already offered. Hey WW, how does the transmission pulley/sprocket and the rear wheel pulley/sprocket line up? Were the engine plates and the transmission plate square? AB |
