Dear Rest of the USA:
America has engaged in some finger wagging lately because California doesn't have enough electricity to meet its needs.  The rest of the country (including George W. Bush's energy secretary Spencer Abraham, who wants Californians to suffer through blackouts as justification for drilling for oil in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge) seems to be just fine with letting Californians dangle in the breeze without enough power to meet their needs.  They laugh at Californians' frivolity.

Well, everybody.   Here's how it really is:

California ranks 48th in the nation in power consumed per person.

California grows more than half the nation's fruit, nuts and vegetables.
We're keeping them.  We need something to eat when the power goes out. We grow 99 percent or more of the nation's almonds, artichokes, dates, figs, kiwifruit, olives, persimmons, pistachios, prunes, raisins and walnuts. Hope
you won't miss them.

California is the nation's number one dairy state.  We're keeping our dairy products.  We'll need plenty of fresh ones since our refrigerators can't be relied upon.   Got milk?

We Californians are gonna keep all our high-tech software in state.  Silicon Valley is ours, after all.   Without enough electricity, which you're apparently keeping for yourselves, we just plain don't have enough software
to spare.

We're keeping all our airplanes.   California builds a good percentage of the commercial airliners available to fly you people to where you want to go.

When yours wear out, you'd better hope Boeing's Washington plant can keep you supplied.  There isn't enough electricity here to allow us to export any more planes than we need ourselves.  And while we're at it, we're keeping all our high-tech aerospace stuff, too, like the sophisticated weapons systems that let you sleep at night, not worried you might wake up under the rule of some foreign kook.

Oh, yeah, and if you want to make a long-distance call, remember where the satellite components and tracking systems come from.   Maybe you could get back in the habit of writing letters.

Want to see a blockbuster movie this weekend?   Come to California. We make them here.   Since we'll now have to make them with our own electricity, we're keeping them.   Even if we shot them somewhere else, the labs, printing
facilities, editing facilities, and sound facilities are all here.

Want some nice domestic wine?   We produce over 17 million gallons per year.

We'll need all of it to drown our sorrows when we think about the fact that no matter how many California products we export to make the rest of America's lives better, America can't see its way clear to help us out with a little electricity.   You can no longer have any of our wine.

You all complain that we don't build enough power plants.   Well, you don't grow enough food, write enough software, make enough movies, build enough airplanes and defense systems or make enough wine.

This is your last warning, America.   Lighten (us) up before it's too late.
Love, The Californians

Paul, I did a quick search before I posted and nothing came up.  I wouldn't have posted it if I had known it was a previously discussed topic.

To the rest of you.  I got a kick out of this and figured I'd share it with you.  I knew it would get some responses.

BTW, I believe in personal resposibility at all levels including the government.  The state of kalifornia made a huge mistake a few years back regarding electrical generation.  Those decisions have now bite them in the ass.  I do not believe that anyone should be forced to help us out.

I was born here 40 years ago.  I love this state.  I love the geography and many of the people.  BUT, I'll be the first to admit that there are alot of people in this state that are terribly misguided.  I wonder how many of them came from elsewhere...

I can't speak for California, but a lot a terribly misguided people have invaded my state from "elsewhere", too. Funny how most of the license plates on their vehicles are from California. I think they are bred for export down there. Like I (or Paul) said, build a big fricking fence...

AR in woods-

STOP STOP STOP, you're scaring me.

You are correct about the amount of produce grown in Calif. but everything doesn't shut down over some minor 1.5hr blacks.

Davis knew about the black out issue 1 year ago in SF when they were experencing blackouts.  He knew about the problem but did nothing to resolve it.

Similar problem in NY with blackouts, but instead they started building new small power generators, and the following year was fine.

The cost of power sold to Calif is over the daily spot market, required during the MULTIPLE deregulation bills passed years ago.  This is the most costly method for purchasing power.

The socialist-democrats, years ago during the boom market, had this scheme to remove all power stations in Calif (reduce smog), and then have neighboring states feed power to the beast.

How much food & wine would Kali produce if we shut off the Colorado river and send the water to New Mexico and let them farm?

"Dear Rest of the USA:

California ranks 48th in the nation in power consumed per person."

So buy some more electric cars and catch up for crying out loud!

"California grows more than half the nation's fruit, nuts and vegetables.

Won't miss'em a bit. Artichokes.... YUK!

"California is the nation's number one dairy state.  We're keeping our dairy products.  We'll need plenty of fresh ones since our refrigerators can't be relied upon.   Got milk?"

Yep - I live in Pa. NEXT DOOR to a dairy farm. Ours is better too!

"We Californians are gonna keep all our high-tech software in state.  Silicon Valley is ours, after all.   Without enough electricity, which you're apparently keeping for yourselves, we just plain don't have enough software

No problem - we'll just pirate it off the net like always. Will you miss the net when you don't have electricity??

"We're keeping all our airplanes.   California builds a good percentage of the commercial airliners available to fly you people to where you want to go."

Fine - try and build'em without power. I'm sure there are plenty of states that will welcome the fleeing industrial refugees you haven't thought of....

"And while we're at it, we're keeping all our high-tech aerospace stuff, too, like the sophisticated weapons systems that let you sleep at night, not worried you might wake up under the rule of some foreign kook."

Your crappy aerospace junk does a lot less to help me sleep than my AR15 does!!

"Oh, yeah, and if you want to make a long-distance call, remember where the satellite components and tracking systems come from.   Maybe you could get back in the habit of writing letters."

As an engineer for the major telecom company in the USA, I can tell you satellites for long distance are obsolete - how much digital fiber optic equipment does Kali make??  NONE!

"Want to see a blockbuster movie this weekend?   Come to California. We make them here."

Reason enough to let you rot. The movie/TV industry had done more harm than good. Besides, I have DirecTV.

"You all complain that we don't build enough power plants.   Well, you don't grow enough food, write enough software, make enough movies, build enough airplanes and defense systems or make enough wine."

Sounds like Kali is the only one complaining! We're just taking bets when the whole stinking sh*thole will slide into the ocean. You guys do make boats there, right?  Try to with no power!

"This is your last warning, America.   Lighten (us) up before it's too late.

Does mean we don't have to hear the collective whining anymore??? Thank God!

I say you guys secede from the union.  But wait, if you do, how will you defend yourselves with only limited capacity mags and politically correct rifles.  Oh well, build some power plants instead and I'll plant myself a walnut tree.

Seriously, the rest of the country isn't "keeping electricity" from you.  Your State was just no wise in their planning for electric supply scalability.  Any electric company in the USA would gladly sell CA power if the state had the capacity to accept it.  That's how they make money.

CA does produce the majority of the produce etc. that you list but the majority of these items are imported in far greater numbers than CA produces.

Well I'm off to crank down the air conditioning, my house is getting a little warm. [;)]

Hope I'm not too late on the "Bash California" thread.

I'm a rural conservative in this state. But I have worked in the big city, too, (orange county) so I know where the liberals are.  They are almost all in the big cities.  We only have a very few token liberals out in the hinterlands.

When I travel back to the countryside, I see plainly that almost everyone is conservative, Christian and republican, so don't blame us for the liberal bullcr@p that emanates from this state. "It ain't us.  It's them big city fellars."

As far as the power crisis goes, I'm rooting FOR it.  Can't wait for us Californians to plunge into the blackness that the enviro-Nazis have manufactured.  Once we have actually suffered from the feel-good environmentalism, the rank and file voter will place the blame squarely on those stinkin enviro-Leftists, as it should be.

All this talk about building a fence round us, or wishing we would fall off into the ocean is non-productive bunk.  (Only people I know who are actually scared of earthquakes are people from out of state.)

As a native of this peculiar state, I have never engaged in the passtime of "You aint from around here, so f*** you and your state."  Nevertheless, feel free to attack us. The *funny* condemnations which have a ring of truth to them are the most appreciated (by me).

AAAARRRGGGHHH!!!!

You guys are killing me!

I can't just leave. If I could, I would!

CA is an enormous economic force. We should not recieve any Federal bailout. We should be SELF RELIANT for our power needs. CA is moving in that direction by considering the relaxation of the environmental restrictions put on new power generation facilities.

Any one who thinks that the U.S. would go down in flames if CA crashed, is delusional.

Even if we fixed all of CA power woes, this place would still SUCK!

If you're gonna write CA off and put up a fence, please let me have one of those keys.

As long as we live in a capitalist society, there will always be a supplier.

With California's natural and monetary resources, industry would have no problem building power generators. And whoever owns them will make a TON of money.

Maybe this will help push the developement of alternative power sources.

What a silly plea. As if the rest of us care about all the things made in California. If you don't have enough power then your corporations are going to have to move elsewhere (like Michigan, where we don't have all these earthquakes, wildfires, and lack of power!). And it's no big deal for consumers either.

If you had the population you did only five years ago you wouldn't be in this pickle. If you're gonna take in so many immigrants than build the power plants. How the Dems fooled you all into thinking that immigration is good and power plant construction (their environmental spiel) is bad I still find amazing. The two just don't add up. You can't continue to take in millions of people and conserve your way to energy independence.

Best wishes

The CA Attorney General, Bill Lockyer, is the same idiot who pushed the Assault Weapons ban through.

He should be impeached for his comments on forms of prison punishment.

CA does not need a bailout, but does need to become self reliant. CA government needs to pull their collective heads out of their collective asses and build, or allow to be built, power generating industries.

I don't give a F**K about how we are 48th in per capita power consumption. We have approximately 12% of the U.S. population within our borders, maybe more. We should produce AT LEAST as much power as we consume. MORE if we want to turn a profit! Damn basics of business!

It's simple mismanagement! The environment is NOT an excuse.

Dang it, now you got me started!

I USED to be a member of the Sierra Club, I got out because of the absolute politics. If they had their way, we would never be allowed to go off pavement, and the pavement would gradually be eliminated. And the horse, bike or foot would be the only forms of transportation (which might not be a bad idea for local travel).

I understand the need to not rape the environment. But something has got to give.

We have the natural and economic resources to develop many different forms of power safely and cleanly.

This is California. We boast about the great weather. Develop solar power. Excuse = too costly.

Within a few miles of my house is one of the biggest wind farms in existance. Develop wind power. Excuse = birds of prey nest in the area and fly into the turning blades and are crippled or killed.

Geothermal (steam) generators. Again, this is CA, very seismically active, lots of steam below the ground. Excuse = I can't remember the excuse. I think it might be that releasing the steam lowers the water table. Or causes the ground to be less stable, your guess is as good as mine.

Hydroelectric means building dams and ruining some beautiful rivers. And we have quite a few dams in Northern CA already. We are also probably moving into a drought cycle, so water releases are not such a good idea.

There are probably many other alternative sources but I can't name them.

This leaves the big one, NUCLEAR.

I know that many people in CA support nukes BUT "not in my backyard" is the general sentiment. And I understand that. We have lots of wide open spaces.

We need to develop this vital resource, in my opinion. It is the answer.

And as to the question of disposal of nuclear waste, that's why God made Canada.

build a fence here? PLEASE DO IT!!!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ...BUILD 10 BERLIN WALLS AROUND THIS STATE, im begging for it, and have said years ago that we should CLOSE DOWN THE BORDER, not to keep kalifkommies in, but to KEEP THE LIBERAL PUKES OUT!!!

why ? because kalif is a toilet, YES A TOILET, THE ENTIRE COUNTRY FLUSHES ALL THEIR LIBERAL SH*T INTO THIS STATE, contrary to misguided belief here, kalif does NOT grow liberal idiots, OH NO those idiots come from YOUR state and move here.
49 states worth of liberal PUKE moving into kalif and screwing things up, WE CANT WIN.
and then we have gun owners from across the country who are SH*TTING on kalif and its laws.
but heres the kicker -- the people that complain the most should really be complaining to there OWN FELLOW STATESMEN for coming to kalif and screwing things up.
the non-kalif liberal PLAGUE coming from the other 49 states are pushing a lot of kalifkommies into other states, THEN we get SH*T on again when we move out and try escape YOUR LIBERAL FELLOW STATESMEN that make life in kalif more difficult.

your state might see some kalif license plates, but on a DAILY basis i see plates from -- CT, VA, AZ, TX, WA, IL, NV, MA, OH, NH and many others -- surprisingly i see a LOT of TX and AZ plates, but those places are supposed to be HEAVENLY so im not sure why they are moving HERE if this place is such a dump. and of course those foreign liberals do NOT know how to drive here.

WELCOME TO KALIF, NOW GO HOME AND TAKE BACK THE LIBERALS YOU SENT HERE!!!

by the way directTV is located in kalif, 2 miles from me actually

one more thing -- DONT SEND POWER HERE, dont want it and HOPE we have more black outs. bush is doing the Right thing by denying us low cost power.

im not saying kalif is good or bad, and i certainly dont constantly SH*T on other states or cities that i dont like or have bad gun laws. every place has its own good and bad points about them, but sometimes you just got to take the good with the bad. and if its bad then theres no need to constantly shove it in the face of the people that live there.

In the interest of fairness to Kali, there are a couple of good things, like incredible scenery in the northern part of the state. I can think of only two other good things related to California:

1 - Ronald Reagan
2 - Metallica

I'm sure there is at least one more that I can't think of right off the top of my head.
