No I know I'm going to get heat for this from a lot of you out there. Ok Mini-14 vs M1 carbine what one is the better gun to have just for a general home gun for the wife if there are thugs or varmints out side. I say the M1 carbine I had a mini-14 and it sucked jammed all the time and it would not take JSP ammo or JHP ammo. My wife who is 5'2 120lbs loves her M1 carbine the only bad thing about it is that finding good ammo for it is hard and costs a little more but for me I'll take my lil M1 any day over a mini-14 and yes I would take a Ar-15 over all the above. But I just want to see what you have to say find out if what people say about this round is true.

The M1 carbine is in my opinion one of the most fun guns to shoot ever made. Women or first time shooters seem to take to them very easily. If she feels comfortable with the gun you could do a lot worse for home defense. It has about the same power as a +P38 spl.

Reload Reload Reload. M1 ammo is expensive in
this area.

The M1 Carbine is an excellent weapon when used within it's capabilities.  This comment does not apply to Universal manufacture as they suck.  I have one, it seriously sucks! Jammaholic!!!!!

People that look down on it are judging it against full power rifles.  When used under 200 yards (although 200 is a bit of a stretch), it is quite accurate.  The round has adequate power for it's intended purpose, but could easily be stopped by body armor at a distance.  This is moot for your purposes anyway.  I don't have my tables with me, but the muzzle energy is in the .357 magnum catagory.

Consider it a long range semi automatic "sub machine" gun in .357 magnum.  Not a bad niche!

WOW this is great I thought people where going to rage in the M1. Ya the ammo costs a lot. There was one of the gun article that was out a few months ago that was taking about the M1 being one of the best home defense weapons for woman and small framed people. Also I saw once a guy take down a deer form 100yd with a M1 with one shot. He was using Hydra-shock bullets thou. Good a place where people like the M1 this is a first.

Got to go with the M1 on this one. Just never been impressed with the Mini-14, though some people seem to love them.

Personally I think the M1 carbine is a POS little pimple rifle. That said, it's a superb home defense rifle. They run all the time. USGI hicaps and parts are cheap. Winchester makes a 110 gr HSP SX load for them. And they will most definitely put the hurt on a bad guy. (they're still a POS though!)

M1 carbine all the way. Most mini 14's I've seen are not at all accurate. My M1 carbine is an earlier Universal full of USGI parts. I've never had a single problem with it & it is accurate. My 8 year old daughter hit her first moving target using it, 2 years ago!!
Not that I'm bragging or anything. [:D][:D]

And yes reloading .30 carbine is the cheaper way to go.

For me it is the
sighting system. Just plain lame. If they had
put decent sights on the gun I would have no
problem with owning one.

I love my carbine but if I'm taking on bad guys give me the mini. The .223 is the superior cartridge.

home defense? go with a shotgun. something short and easy to handle for the little lady, and ya dont have to be right on target. plus, you wont kill the kids in the next room.

If one thinks of the M1 Carbine as a replacement for the .45ACP 1911 Colt pistol it puts the weapon into perspective.  Rapid, on-target, aimed shots up to 100 yards with 4 MOA with a hot pistol caliber cartridge's ballistics.  Actually a pretty good choice.  Try Cole-Distributing.  Last I looked they had M1 Carbine ammo.

i guess if she wasnt happy with a .45 of some kind i'd go with the m-1 remember to tell her to shoot the bad guy untill he falls the .30 carbine leaves a lot to be desired. just my .02

My wife and kids absolutely love my M1 carbine with retractable wire stock.

I purchased the retractable to make it both lighter and more versatile and easer to bring along while traveling.

Go with the M1.

M1 carbines a great, and I shoot reloads with lead bullets.  Worst part is shagging the brass and finding inexpensive used brass.

Here's a comparison, with the .30 a better round.
.30 carbine  110gr   2300fps    1455me
.357         125gr   1220fps    413me

Which one is better.....?

Which ever one spits a round out of the muzzle end of the barrel when it is needed the most.

A good gunsmith can make most arms reliable if the goods are there to work with.  This may be a more economical solution for your Mini-14.

I am a believer in the .223 round.  The .30 caliber round that the M1 Carbine fires is not the best one stop popper but it all depends on where you are able to put it now doesn't it?

Both will do considerable damage if used properly.  If your main concern is your wife's abibility to defend herself and home when you are not - whatever she feels most competent with is the winner.

Hope my input helps....

I love my Mini-14. It does not jam and it is very accurate from across the room. Their accuracy problems don't really aply when you are using it for self defense in the home. I prefer my shotgun. However go with what works.

The Mini-14 I had was so unreliable it was not funny. The thing was that it was new I took it to a gunsmith he told me theres not a thing wrong with it. So I got myself a factory mags for it and they sucked even more then the ones I bought for $9.00. I have seen and heard of people taking deer down with a M1 never with a mini-14. For all you guys out there that have a M1 Mag safe has some of the best ammo for it. The ammo cost a lot but I'll tell you it is worth it. You can stop me if I'm wrong out there but a bullet going 3100 FPS with someone who is 7 to 10 yds away from you it would go through the person like nothing. Yes first thing I'd get would be my Mossberg 590A1 the sweetest shotgun around ghost ring sighs 20" barrel 8 in the tube and one in the hole 6 rounds on a side saddle 4 in the butt stock  thats 19 rounds of 00 buckshot power. If I had to shoot anything out to 100 yd I would just get her anything but a Mini-14 first of all but I think I'd get her a 270win or 22-250 REM or even a 223 in bolt action she does not like the AR-15. This is not to rage on the guys who like the Mimi-14 if yours works great.

Get one of each and an AR.  My Mini never jams.  My M1 Carbine, a 1944 Inland, is a blast.  Of course, you must have an AR or your collection is just not complete.  Get a Garand also.
