OXYMORON: "A rhetorical figure in which an epigrammatic effect is created by the conjunction of incongruous or contradictory terms" Some of my personal favorites: "Federal budget" "Military intelligence" "Paid volunteer" "Minor crisis" "Conservative liberal" "Rap music" "Democratic Leadership" "Pretty ugly" "Small crowd" "Clearly confusing"

Near miss is not an oxymoron. Ask yourself, did it (whatever the subject is) hit or did it miss. If it didn't hit, it was a miss. Then ask by a lot or a little. A far miss or a near miss. Now, if you can't tell the difference between an adjective and an adverb, and you're thinking "nearly missed", that's a hit. Near miss, however is perfectly fine. Means it didn't hit, but was close. Like a hit in the nine ring is a near miss on the ten ring. A passing airplane is a miss. If you can see the expression on the pilot's face, it's a near miss. Norm
