I've got  a M29 S&W with a 4 inch barrel which I bought back when Elmer Keith was still alive. EK was always pictured with a 4 incher so that's what I got for myself.

It didn't hurt that the gunstore didn't HAVE any longer barreled 29s  at the time though. Besides, I already had a 6 inch M57 by that time and wanted the shorter gun. Great guns, both of them IMHO.

Two Ruger Vaqueros, Marlin rifle and Marlin carbine. I had a pre-model 29, which I shot it in USRA and bowling pin for a couple years. When I found out it was a pre-29 collector I felt that it should be saved, I sold it because I don't own guns I won't shoot.

I've thought about getting a .44 mag for a while, but then I saw the light.  I got a super redhawk in 454 casull.  There is something really nice about being able to go from a mellow 45 schofield to a wide range of 45 colt loads to 454 casull.  Depending on the ammo, I can go from about 200 to 1900 ft-lbs.  Now that is some satisfying versatility.  Of course, as someone else pointed out, the super redhawk is a bit on the large side for everyday casual carry.  It would be a good camping/hiking accessory, in case you run into an angry bear or rabid truck.

It is an old model, probably from the '60s.

I had one of those too. Was a gift from my dad. Some POS stole it a few years back. I now have a new model and it is not even close in quality to the old model. They are great guns either way.

This is an ode to the .44 magnum, a great cartridge. And nothing better to launch it with than a blued, Smith and Wesson model 29 (which I have). Mine has a 6" barrel. It is a beautiful gun. Evokes Dirty Harry and Taxi Driver. I traded a Glock 20 for it, and have not regretted it since.

Who here has a .44 magnum gun?

In the Dirt Harry movies, Harry Callahan shoots 44 spls and when the movie shows a S&W M29, its actually the 45LC version because on-screen a real 0.429-inch bore diameter doesn't look as impressive as a 0.451-inch bore.

The .45LC is older and can't be loaded to as high a pressure (and hence velocity)

Wanta bet?

They use the Ruger Vaquero frame for the .500 cals for a reason.

PS  ANd yes..wheel guns kick ass!

Most of the custom large caliber guns are built on Bisley and Super Blackhawk frames.  Regardless, a properly loaded .45 Colt will beat the pants off a .44 Magnum any day.   Actually, if Elmer Keith had better brass, we wouldn't even have the .44 Magnum, we'd have the .45 Magnum!

Here is my Super Redhawk .44...

i always thought they were about equal? what makes it weaker?

The .45LC is older and can't be loaded to as high a pressure (and hence velocity)

The 45 is a bit older but the reason Keith went with the parent cartridge 44 special was that it left more metal in the cylinder to contain the pressure. With the same  platform the smaller cartridge will always produce a stronger gun.

I've got two M29s.  One is a 6-1/2 and the other a 4".  My dad carried the 4" throughout his career.  He bought it in the late 50s (57 or 8?) the year S&W started making them.  He was a cop in Corpus Christi at the time.  He had been through several scrapes where the issued .38 didn't do its job, so he wanted something that would.  He joined the Border Patrol in 1961 and was a deputized US Marshall for the riots in Oxford, MS in 1962.  He carried it until he retired from the Patrol in 1982.  It still has the original wood grips, worn almost smooth by his hands.  Some of the blue has been rubbed off by his hoster, which I have as well, along with the box the pistol came in when he bought it. That gun has a place of honor in my safe.

.44 magnum is for the pure joy of shooting, not for down and dirty business of self defense.

I would much rather have one 44mag round strike my attacker than five or six 9mm rounds. So which is a better self defense round?????  (and if you think I'm the only one who thinks so look up what Jeff Cooper thought about this subject)

.44 is great round for killing a man whos standing still minding his own buisness, but its shitty for self defense where your targets are attacking you.

If you take case capacity times pressure full house .44 and .45colt are identical.

But once you load the same weight bullet into both the free case capacity in the .45 gives it an advantage of about 10%, because the larger diameter bullet is shorter.

Buffalobore loads some pretty extreme stuff for .45, reportedly with lilgun.

I have had very good results with Lil' Gun in my .44.  The target in my pics above was shot with a Lil' Gun load.

.44mag is overrated.  Only the 300gn loads are impressive.  the 210gn .41 mag is a better performer than the 180gn or 240gn ".44" Mag (which is actually only .429 mag) on big game animals.

I knew we would have a BS response sooner or later...

How is the 210gr .41 load a better performer than a 180 or 240gr .44 load?  Are you talking about self defense, hunting, or just out of your ass?  Does the 210gr .41 have more energy than 240gr .44 load?  No.  Does it penetrate better than a properly loaded 240gr load?  Once again, the answer is no.  So, please enlighten me...

I have 2  4 5/8" Stainless Vaqueros in .44mag and a Marlin 94 in .44 as well.   That little carbine kicks like a mule!

I traded off my Super Redhawk cause I just never shot it much.  Sweet shooter though, very mild (for a .44 that is!) cause of the weight and soft grips.

Seems since I got into firearms in a big way 15 years ago, I have always had some sort of 44 Mag.

This is the one I currently have.  It is fine and shoots ok, but I sure miss that Stainless 629 Classic I traded to a friend of mine about 10 years ago.  He still has it and I think he would sell it back to me if I wanted it bad enough.

I still love my  629 with a 6" barrel though, and I plan on shooting a deer with it this season.
