It's a shame, because I was on the markt for a new Wave and even a new titanium one.

But, hey. If he wants to support a traitor, so be it, but don't expect me to support him.

Girly tools are for girly men. Period.

From the SOG knives website:

MACV/SOG History -

SOG Specialty Knives and Tools, Inc. was named in honor of the Vietnam War's only covert special warfare unit-The Studies and Observation Group. Its existence was once denied by the US Government and it wasn't until long after the war that the SOG Story could even be told.

The following is an excerpt from US ELITE FORCES-VIETNAM by Leroy Thompson that further describes the nature of this specialized group and its secret missions.

Separate from "conventional," unconventional operations of the 5th Special Forces Group were the clandestine operations of Military Assistance Command Vietnam/Studies and Observations Group (MACV/SOG). The Studies and Observation Group (SOG) was a cover name to disguise SOG's real function, and the name "Special Operations Group," as it was sometimes called, described its real mission more accurately.
Activated in January of 1964, SOG was a joint services unit composed of members from all four branches of the armed forces, including Navy SEALs, Marine Recons, Air Force Special Operations pilots of the 90th Special Operations Wing, but predominantly Army Special Forces.

MACV/SOG's missions included: cross border operations into Cambodia, Laos and North Vietnam to carry out intelligence gathering or raiding missions on the enemy's 'home ground'; gathering intelligence about POWs and carrying out rescue missions when possible; rescuing downed aircrews in enemy territory ("Bright Light" missions); training, inserting, and controlling agents in North Vietnam to gather intelligence or form resistance groups; carrying out 'black' Psy Ops such as operating fake broadcasting stations inside North Vietnam; kidnapping or assassinating key enemy personnel; retrieving sensitive document so equipment lost in enemy territory or in enemy hands; and inserting rigged mortar rounds or other booby-trapped ordnance in enemy arms caches (OPERATION ELDEST SON).

-Leroy Thompson. US Elite Forces-Vietnam. No. 7. Texas: Squadron/Signal, 1985. 27.

If you'd like to learn more about the MACV/SOG Special Forces, here are a few books worth reading-

If you have a Leatherman tool, then sell it on eBay (rather than pitching it) - it will cost asshat a new sale, and it will put a few bucks in your pocket towards an SOG or Gerber.

If Tim Leatherman had signed that petition, it would be his right (and that should be respected)

When he signs it as the CEO of a company, he is putting that company's name behind it, and that is unfair to his employees (who I'll bet not all are going to vote for Hanoi John). Unfortunately, as a rich, arrogant prick, Tim Leatherman can't figure that out, so blows everyone off with a cavalier "so be it"

Well, so be it, Tim. Your products have no market here. Ever. Adios.

I got the same form letter.  I didn't expect him to run off to retract his statement, an in a way I would have been dissapointed if he had.  I'm not going to throw my Leatherman away, but I will put it in a bag somewhere as a back up tool.  I will never have another one.  I'm going to try SOG first, the Gerbers I have seen lok to clunky, plus I get a discount on SOG.

The only other company on the list I used (before) was Columbia. I didn't bother writing them because it is so much bigger.  Plus it is a true corp, not a small basically one family operation.  Columbia could give a shit if I buy their product.  I still won't buy them, other stuff just as good and less expensive anyway.  The same reason that this boycott tactic might hurt Leatherman is the same reason I liked them in the first place.  In a way it makes me feel bad.

Here is my Columbia response.

Dear Mr. Shaw,

Thank you for taking the time to contact Columbia Sportswear and share your concerns regarding a recent article in the Oregonian.

Please let me assure that Columbia Sportswear is a bi-partisan and public company that doesn?t affiliate with political candidates or organizations.  However, as an outdoor company we are concerned with outdoor issues that effect the environment and our consumer?s ability to enjoy the outdoors.  Therefore, we?ve ensured that Columbia representatives have been in attendance during each candidate?s visit to the Pacific Northwest.  Specifically, the article that announced our support for the Kerry campaign was a misprint and should have only announced personal support for Kerry on behalf of Peter Bragdon ? a company executive.  In addition, it should be noted that other company executives including our CEO and President, Tim Boyle have personally supported the Bush campaign both verbally and monetarily.  In conclusion, Columbia Sportswear did not and will not endorse a candidate for President of the United States.

Thanks again for you inquiry and the opportunity to respond to your concerns.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions or concerns regarding Columbia Sportswear or our products.

Best wishes,

Kim

I got the same response.  He no doubt sent a form letter out to reply to all the boycott e-mails.  When businessmen make known their support for a rabid socialist and traitor, then they must accept the consequences.  Anyone who would vote for a piece of trash like Kerry who has burned American flags and urinated on them is no American.  This election will be a turning point in this country's history.  Few elections before this one have been so hotly contested by two sides so far apart.  If Bush wins, I believe we will see violent protests.  If Kerry wins, that will no doubt be the resurgence of the militia movement and a very serious underground right wing organization forming.

Re: Endorsement of John Kerry

I am sadden to read of your public support for John Kerry.   I hope you considered the consequences to your employees and their families.  Being the owner of a small business in "fly over country" I look to purchase or do business with companies/organizations that share our values.  John Kerry and the current Democratic party does not.  Our inventory shows we have approximately 130 of your tools...these will be taken out of service (and replaced by a competitor).  Additionally our local media has been contacted to announce our actions.  I wish you well and pray for your employees.

Thank you.....Bill

Then you can get rid of them without making this student buy a cheap one. Ill pay whatever price you think is fair, plus shipping.

Nice to hear that at least one of the companies on the list has the common sense to do some damage control.

Now if they were really serious about it, they would at least give "Peter Bragden, vice president, general counsel, Columbia Sportswear (Portland, Oregon)" his walking papers for being boneheaded enough (he's your general counsel for cripes sake!) to sign a company title to a political endorsement. I sure as hell would not want him giving me legal advice.

I see that many of the SOG tools have covers over the blades, screwdrivers, etc. to make the pliers more comfortable to use.  Do the covers get in the way?

I also see that SOG makes the overall tool easy to disassemble.  How many folks swap out individual blades/tools, and is there a place to get single blades/tools?

Christmas is coming, and I wouldn't mind banishing my tool-that-shall-not-be-named to a forgotten drawer in my workbench.  After I grind off the brand marks.

Message sent to Leatherman Tools:

The young mechanics often want to check out the tools us old timers carry and use, so they know what to buy with their tool allowances.

They will NEVER see another Leatherman product in my hand, on my belt,or in my tool box. I threw that junk in the river on my way home from work today.

Yes, I am an old timer, and I served in the U.S. Armed Forces during the Viet Nam War. This is the war during which John Kerry committed acts of treason against the People and Government of the U.S.A. This led directly to the pain, suffering, and deaths of some of my comrads in arms.

Your boss has stated his (and your's) support for this traitor in his bid for President of the United States.

This is an insult to me and everyone who has ever Honorably served this country. I will boycot your products from this day forward, and will encourage all I work with, hunt with, and go to church with to do the same.

May your company quickly vanish from the U.S. marketplace.
