I was a gypsy moth trapper for 2 summer seasons for the wv department of agriculture back in '89 and '90.
All I had to do was put out the traps out, cardboard milk carton types with pharamones in them, at specific locations in the county area on a topo map, then check them at least 2 times and fill out a small form paper on the moth count and mail them to va. tech.
Of course there was no local boss, I spoke with someone on the phone 1 time a week, and he was a soft spoken good ol boy from union, wv, who was a lifer for the dept. of argiculture and who was wisely milking that "my boss is a 100 miles away, I talk to him 1 time a week on the phone" lifestyle for all it was worth.
I put out my traps quickly, within a few days, then basically checked them fast, within a few days also a few weeks later and again the 2nd month.

They knew some people would do things faster, some slower, but they told everyone no matter how fast you work, submit 40 hours for your time sheet. No problem, I did! And I was off 7 days a week for weeks at a time. Higher than what is common wages. Good job!

and whenever you see 1 of those gypsy moth traps on a tree somehwere, know that someone somewhere is still in bed at 11 a.m., or they're off doing whatever they enjoy the most, and on the timeclock as an employee of your state, being well paid at that.

far more importantly, spending all of my off time reading, writing, skydiving, and playing guitar.

General Manager of an 11 position indoor shooting range with a large gun shop. I used to tell people that it was like "an alcoholic running a bar".

It's not often that you get to do something you really love as your livelihood. I loved getting up and going to work everyday.

Guided Missile Officer, USS DALE (CG-19) from November 1992 to October 1993.

GOD but what an awsome job that was! Absolutely the BEST men in the Navy were in my division, and the COOLEST gear! Loved every damned second of it!

I miss it. They are long gone, and the ship was sunk in a missile exercise. Sad....

"computer technician" at a large chain retail store. It paid poorly and is certainly not glamorous work but it was a hoot to spend most of the day just troubleshooting computers and solving people's problems. I miss what amounted to basically playing with computers for my check

Tough one. I love having my gun store side business which I just started. I like to meet gun people and bee ess about AR's and such. Probably my "Best Job".

However, the most fun I ever had at a job was when I was a general I.T. Guy for a company called AMF Tuboscope. Specifically a 18 month span that had me traveling to Newport Beach/Irvine area for two week stretches in which we worked and played VERY HARD.  All on the company nickel. We had cars to drive, cash to spend, lived in Newport Beach and partied our assess off while learning the computer system of a company we were moving to Houston.

Division officer tour in a guided missile destroyer.  The Charles F. Adams class ships were the last in the long line of the real sports cars of destroyers.  437' long, 45' beam, +4kilotons fully loaded displacement, 70,000shp, twin screws and twin rudders.  33kts max speed.  Turn on a dime and give back nine cents change.  A little lively in a heavy sea but the sweetest handling ships ever.  The Aegis ships are by far more capable warships...but for sheer joy of shiphandling, nothing was as good as a DDG.

Quoted:
What is the best job you’ve had in your lifetime?

For me, I was a general manager of a small (60,000 annual units) bicycle factory in Europe for couple years.  I didn’t know much about bicycles when I got started since my background was in sales, administration and cost accounting with some dabbling in manufacturing.  Later I got to do a lot of designing and prototyping.   It was neat to design a bicycle on a piece of paper with a pencil and then have a working prototype few days later.

My wife and I used to travel throughout Europe on bikes during off season and we would design a new bike for each trip depending on the country and road conditions.  Learned a lot about what works and what doesn’t.

It was great to see my ideas and concepts come to life in just few short days.

Hopefully the one I start on the 10th...

Go Army!

Does "best" mean most fun or "best paid"?

The most fun I ever had at a job started when I was 15 years old.  I landed a job as a bus boy at a Czech restaurant.  I made $5.00 for every day worked plus an unknown percentage of the waitresses tips.  The tips they waitress gave me were usually a dollar or or two.  So If I worked for 8-10 hours I would get anywhere from $5 - $10.00.

The bonus was the pussy from the Czech waitresses!!!  Damn ...life was good!!

My best job???  26 years in the automotive industry!

I would have to say parking cars at an upscale nightclub in St. Louis  when I was 15-17. The person who ran the valet service was drug addict and a friend of a friend, so he didn't care that when I started out I did not have a drivers license yet. I got to drive Porsche's, Ferrari's, etc before I was legally able to drive. You were supposed to be 21 to work there so since I was an employee everyone at the club assumed I was 21.  The bouncers at our club worked other clubs, so I was able to pretty much get in any good club in the city if it was the right night........and party with all the hot waitresses. Made great money, got laid by older women(21-24)weekly, and met lots of cool people. Don't know how I ever made it through my freshman and sophmore years in high school........
