Their "experiment" is flawed and biased.

1) The subjects used were openly antigunner activists who don't have any experience and a phobia of guns.  The proper subjects would have been randomly selected concealed weapons license holders.

2) A civilian doesn't have to respond to a situation like a policeman does.  He can run away where a policeman can't.  Also, a civilian usually has his weapon concealed and therefore maintains an element of surprise.

Can I play that video game? It sounds like fun. I bet I could beat the pants off those antigun freaks too.

Better yet, with that idiotic logic, EVERYONE should be allowed to carry a gun, because even the criminals will get nervous and hesitate, and no one will end up shooting anyone.

I imagine I would not have faired much better
using the simulator for the first and neither do the leos.
If the four would complete the simulator course I am sure they would have different conclusions.
I would welcome the opportunity to use a simulator.

Having not touched an arcade machine in years,
I stepped up to Area 51 site 4 and some other game whose name I forget this past weekend. This after much education in the craft of shooting. Shot like a natural, while the fool next to me was sweeping the light gun across the screen(sideways, no less) and missing everything.

Seriously, though, doesn't this "experiment" counter the former NRA guy's point? If they couldn't shoot, then they're perfectly safe. Leave it to responsible and clear-minded ppl like us to stop the criminals.
Real life is not a shooting gallery, at least not for civilians. You wouldn't draw anyway in that kind of situation unless you had an advantage(or were directly threatened).
Heck, what do they think Gunsite is for? I get the sense that most ppl would draw to intervene(i.e. in a situation where they weren't directly threatened) anyway unless they had the proper training. And if they were threatened I think it'd be pretty obvious who to shoot. If I walked up and held a knife to their throat I don't think they would have hesitated. But perhaps I overestimate their intelligence.

I've used FAT's in training and it can be pretty stressful and enlightning.

However, I came to a different conclusion than the author.  He surmised, "training is hard so I should quit, and hope my neighbor will protect me."

I came away with "training is hard, so I better do it often, and make it as real as I can."

Futher, the author comletely ignores that your average Police Officer gets nothing like the "months" of firearms training he feels would be reqired to become proficient and is just as subject to the physiological responses as anyone else.  That being the case how can we allow them to walk about armed in public?

When I lived in Salt Lake City, Utah, my local range bought and installed a live fire simulator.

An image was projected on a screen with "self healing" fabric.  You shot at the bad guys with live ammo.  Your hits were recorded (very accurately) by the system.  The "self healing" fabric needed to be replaced every week or so.

I have no LEO training, just a naturally cool head and good aim.  I did pretty well.  The experience was very realistic - at the end of the course, my heart was pounding, and I could feel the adrenaline flowing.

I read the MMM article and it did not ring true.  I think the people here had bad instructors who knew what was expected, and proceeded to give it to them.  I have introduced about 18 people to guns over the years, almost all of whom had never fired guns in their life.  I am a patient and thorough trainer, and by the end of the day, my trainee is almost always shooting very well.  I cannot believe that these people received professional training and started shooting badly.  I have been to Front Sight in Nevada, and in less than 4 hours, have learned to properly and effectively handle a [b]machine gun[/b], for crying out loud!

i've also used FATS and its loaded to make you fail like there was this one where a guy had a 44 in his waist ban and his hands up he dipped his hand  and then brushed back his hair while smiling real big kinda a like a bullie scarrin a kid but nit hittin him. i shot him every time and failed because he never drew the gun. but in real life i would feel my life would be in jepordy and if i was tellin some one to keep thier hands up and there was a gun in there waste band  and they dipped id blow um away im going home later that day.
