I have a few questions about private in state transfers of handguns.  I live in Texas and was wondering if I buy a handgun from an individual if I have to file the transfer or anyother type of notification to the government.  And is selling of a handgun by an individual to another individual under 21 legal?  Thanks for any info you can give.

As far as I know you MUST be 21 to own a handgun.

To the best of my knowlege, federal law says that you must be 18 to own a handgun.  And be 21 to purchase one from a dealer.  This would seem to indicate that you can do a private transfer at 18 if a guy is willing to sell to you and there aren't any state/local laws prohibiting this.  I could be wrong though...

the federal law is screwy. I bought my first handgun at 18 from a private party. I sold a handgun to a friend who was 19, and the Sheriff Deputies in 2 counties tried to bust him for it, only to find out it was LEGAL!!
