raf, Lack of a flash suppressor lights up your area during the DAY. Flash suppressors are important because they help conceal one's position in the daylight not nighttime. I would wager that the overwhelming majority of military encounters occur in the daytime. Nightime shootouts of any consequence are rare, and to be effective at night, an individual requires expensive night/infrared scopes (thousands of bucks) and a stupid enemy that doesn't use concealment (foxholes, ground cover, etc.) |

I thought Q3131A and M193 ball were the same ?
Both should have the flash retardant mixed in with the powder. Why the massive muzzle flash, then ? Sure would make you an easy target, day or night. |

Thunderstruck, don't expect to effectively use an NVD for more than 1 shot w/o a good flash suppressor. Current and projected SOP for the military envisions MORE fighting at night as the potential opposition will most likely be less well-equipped/trained to do so. Not a flame. AC Doctor, you're getting my point. That huge fireball is a GIFT to a potential adversary. With all the items that COULD have been banned, why did they ban flash suppressors, HMMMMMMM...?

Question,
What abou WWII and Korea. How did the Garand do at night without a flash supressor. By the way the SAR-3 has a short barrel that doesn’t help keep the flash down at all. Has anyone fired a 308 or 30.06 either a bolt or semi auto without a suppresor at night, I was just wondering how bad the flash is from a Garand or non suppresed FAL at night. I am going to purchase an FAL and a Garand in the very near future and I would like to know in regards to the FAL if I really need to get a preban just to have the suppresor. Sniper, Whether or not to lay out the extra bucks for a pre-ban is up to you, there are many other reasons besides the availability of flash suppressors for doing so, IMO. It's been demonstrated that, all other things being equal, barrel length in itself does lessen muzzleflash. Flash suppressor (Vortex, the best, IMHO), for M1 and others available from [url]smithenterprises.com[/url]. Costly, but the best usually is. Seek out other vendors, if you like. Personally, I think that an M1 outfitted with a medium weight match barrel (Douglas, from Champion's choice,in .308)a synthetic stock from Ram-Line, a Vortex flash suppressor, and ammo stored in 8-rd clips in bandoliers makes a good alternative to the FN, and a much cheaper buy than the M1A.

I've shot a FAL at night, with the shorter style FS and a 21" barrel. It works great. The flash looks like little cigarette embers over each hole. Very brief and very dark. I was very impressed.

My Smith Flash hider I got in trade for my smith, and armalite muzzle brakes, works great, only a few sparks at night, and it looks cool..

Way to go Vyper. Try putting a circle of THIN stainless steel wire around the groove at the end of the suppressor to help prevent it tangling in brush. Too much, too thick, and it may enhance the flash. Experiment, and let us know how you make out.

I can't think of a clever description so I will just say there is an EXTREMELY BRIGHT FLASH. It is clear to me why flash suppressors were invented. Just a sideline; There were two types of flash suppressors used on M-1 sniper rifles. A cone shaped style(early) and a pronged style(later). I've not seen either in action. They are available as surplus The cone type clamps onto the bayonet lug and the prong type replaces the gas cylinder lock. |

Gun Smoke Enterprises has done some testing of the type you are referring to, on M16s and posted pics here. We had intended to do a lot more, but the digital camera used was a disappointment, and daylight savings time came along as well. Perhaps by this fall, a digital camcorder will be in use. Thanks, bandit, mebbe we'll get some pix soon. Uncle Buck, the M1 garand cone-type device is best called a flash hider, as it did not suppress the flash, but merely hid a little of the flame from the shooter; it was roundly hated as it adversely affected the POI. The prong-type came later, and was much better regarded, both as a flash suppressor, and for the fact that the rifle shot OK with the device mounted. The cone-type flash-hider for the M-3 was designed to be a flash hider, to be used on the M-3 Infrared "sniper" carbine. Both cone-types were designed and issued at about the same time.
