Ford's only mistake was not building a 351 to put in the later Stangs to compete with the Camaros and Birds.  It would have eaten their lunch, the 302 gave them about all they wanted.

Altho it's wasn't a factory option the 351 Windsor will bolt up without much trouble at all to the same bell housing that the 302 was hooked to.  The 351W is a "small block" same as the 260/286/302 and many parts interchange between them. The main difference is the deck hight and, of course, bore and stroke.  You can build the heck out of a 351W and it'll run with the best of em'.  If you really want a hot 351 pick up a Cleveland engine(if you can find one). The 4bbl heads from the 351C have some of the largest valves of any street engine and even the 2bbl heads are bigger then the 202 Chevy heads.  The Detomaso Pantera  had a 351C placed mid-body on a transaxel and that car would flat fly when you got it going.
