The madness has begun: Naked activists, Bush-bashing rappellers and drum-thumping, tie-dye-wearing marchers unleashed a torrent of wacky and daring civil disobedience yesterday.
The displays certainly gave New Yorkers an eyeful - and a little taste of the chaos to come next week during the Republican National Convention.

AIDS activists had New Yorkers dropping their jaws when they dropped their trousers and everything else on Eighth Ave., across from the heavily guarded Madison Square Garden just after noon.

"We're telling the naked truth," said a nude Sharonann Lynch, 35, of Greenwich Village, one of 11 ACT UP protesters who took part in the cheeky demonstration.

"It feels effective, it's exposure," she said as she was hauled away in handcuffs by police. Mayor Bloomberg laughed off the naked protest. "This is New York. Of course, we had seven naked people on Eighth Ave. What's the question?"

Earlier, at 9 a.m., a group of four anti-Bush demonstrators calling themselves "Operation Sibyl" climbed onto the roof of The Plaza hotel and unfurled a giant sign that said "Truth" and "Bush" written on arrows painted in opposite directions.

"I was out here drinking my coffee and I saw a guy plop out the window," said David Davis, 41, a Seattle banker in town with his daughter. "People were cheering. . . . People are definitely noticing, so I guess it's working."

All four protesters - Terra Lawson-Remer, 26, Manhattan; David Murphy, 31, Brooklyn; Rebecca Johnson, 25, of Oakland, Calif., and Pablo Cesar Maxit, 28, of Dallas - were arrested and charged with first-degree assault.

There's much more in store over the next week. At 2 p.m. today, a group calling themselves the Greene Dragon is dressing up like Minutemen and taking the Staten Island ferry to Manhattan to rescue the island from the GOP.

Later tonight, environmentalist bicyclists are staging a "critical mass" demonstration by riding en masse, possibly blocking traffic and violating traffic laws.

Sunday's giant anti-war march should be a spectacle. Some say they'll come dressed as Vikings and pirates. There will be a ukelele brigade; a group of radical cheerleaders and Grandmothers for Peace.

Next week's zany protests include a Make Out, Not War smooch-a-thon and the Axis of Eve Anti-Bush panty protest.

At a gathering yesterday at Columbus Circle of about 80 protesters who walked from the Democratic convention in Boston to New York, one activist, who goes by "Simon," rallied the crowd as others banged on drums and toted giant, yellow, bird-like flags.

"Hopefully this will set the tone," he said just before the group headed down Broadway to Union Square. "This is just the beginning as the world will soon see."

Cops busted five more demonstrators at Union Square for allegedly using a bullhorn without a permit.

August 27, 2004 -- Four activists who hung a huge banner on the front of the swanky Plaza hotel yesterday in an early protest of the Republican National Convention face up to 25 years in prison because a cop was severely hurt during the quartet's roundup.
Two of the protesters from a group they called Operation Sibyl rappelled down the façade of The Plaza around 8 a.m. using grappling hooks, ropes and other climbing gear to drape the sign. It featured an arrow labeled "Truth" pointing one way, and an arrow labeled "Bush" in the opposite direction.

The two other activists assisted their cohorts from the roof of the hotel at Fifth Avenue and Central Park South, and where they had checked in as guests the night before.

"George Bush is deceiving the American public, not just about Iraq, but also about the economy," said the group's spokesman, Evan Thies, 24.

Thies said gawkers on the street below burst into applause when they saw what the sign said. The banner stayed up on the hotel for just over a half-hour until cops took the activists into custody.

One of those cops, seven-year veteran Sgt. Joseph Diaz, cut open his leg when he fell through a skylight on the roof, and required 38 stitches when he was treated at Bellevue Hospital, according to police.

Thies, who is also communications director for city Councilman David Yassky, said one of the activists had warned the sergeant not to remain on the skylight because it was cracked, but claimed Diaz ignored the warning. "The last thing we wanted to have happen is anyone to get hurt," said Thies.

Because of Diaz's injury, the four activists who hung the sign were charged with first-degree assault — which carries a maximum prison sentence of 25 years — as well as reckless endangerment, criminal trespass, conducting an unlawful street show, unlawful posting of an advertisement, and failing to obtain a license to hang a sign larger than 75 feet.

Arrested were Terra Lawson-Rember, 26, of Manhattan, and Rebecca Johnson, 25, of Oakland, Calif., who were both on the roof during the stunt, and the two rappellers, David Murphy, 31, of Brooklyn, and 28-year-old Pablo-Cesar Maxit of Dallas.

Robert Mlandinich, a spokesman for the Sergeants' Benevolent Association, blasted Thies for his role as spokesman for the group, saying "this man is representing an organization that is conducting illegal actions, and in this particular case it led to violence."

"Anybody involved in city government or on the city payroll should not be involved in activities that put the public or law enforcement personnel in harm's way."

Thies' boss Yassky, a Democrat from Brooklyn, said that he knew his spokesman was taking time off for a protest, but did not know exactly what he was doing. Yassky declined to comment further.

About noon yesterday, 12 people from the AIDS activist group ACT-UP marched down Eighth Avenue to 33rd Street — across from Madison Square Garden, where the convention will be held — and stripped off their clothes to protest Bush administration policies.

"Bush stop AIDS, drop the debt now!" chanted the nude men and women, who called on the president to forgive all debt owed by Third World countries so they can devote resources to fighting AIDS.

"You have to resort to this," said Sharon Lynch, 35, one of the protesters, whose display blocked traffic for about 15 minutes before cops moved in and arrested nine of the demonstrators.

Two other clothed members of ACT-UP were busted after they hung an anti-Bush sign on a trailer at the intersection.

Also yesterday, a veteran Bronx community activist was arrested on contempt of court charges yesterday for refusing to vacate an abandoned building he's lived in as a squatter for 25 years.

The man, Rafael Bueno, of East 136th Street in Mott Haven, came under scrutiny this month when it was learned he had invited anti-Bush protesters from all over the country to crash at his building.

Last week, Bronx Supreme Court Justice Patricia Williams ordered Bueno out of the building. But yesterday, the judge ordered Bueno to jail when she learned that not only was he still living there, but 40 protesters were too.

Sage, you beat me to it. I have no problem with peaceful, non-destructive, law-abiding protests. But if they get out of line, don't abide by reasonable and lawful requests of the authorities, or get violent and destructive then they are nothing more than common criminals and deserve to be treated as such.

Notice the peaceably to assemble part? That means if you get out of line and start tearing up the city or interupting peoples lives, that gives the Government the Right to protect the population as a whole from morons like you. Be it busting your skull with a PR-24, or giving a wiff of some CS gas. When you end up on an FBI watch list, don't bitch and moan, it is your own fault.
God help any tree hugger I find chained to any of my equipment. You'd be amazed how fast they'd find that key before they got to the saw blade.

I don't understand the naked morons. All they had was bitching about aids and something about debt? The 15 billion bush gave africa for aids was a good start, but isn't enough. It is never enough. Fuck these people, and their little dog too.

Cops bust bike protest

At least 264 riders nabbed for blocking streets

Manhattan was spin city last night as 5,000 activists on bicycles swarmed city streets and snarled traffic during a protest of the upcoming Republican National Convention.
At least 264 riders were arrested on charges of disorderly conduct for blocking intersections near Madison Square Garden and in the East Village, police said.

The arrests marked the first real confrontation between cops and the thousands of protesters who have descended on New York ahead of the convention, which starts Monday.

"The cops said, 'Get out of here!' and I was trying to get out and I was cuffed," complained one busted bicyclist who identified himself as Keith from Brooklyn.

At first, police seemed willing to allow the protesters to have the run of the road as they zigzagged up and down Manhattan from Union Square.

But as the cyclists blocked the intersection of W. 34th St. and Seventh Ave. at the Garden, police began arresting demonstrators.

Many more were collared later at Second Ave. around E. 10th St., near St. Marks Church, which was hosting an after-party for the bicyclists.

"The cops are coming! Move out!" bicyclists screamed to each other as they made their way down Second Ave., hurling their bikes over the church fence in a desperate bid for sanctuary.

"They just all came to a stop," said Reggie Lakew, 28, a gift coordinator from Roosevelt Island, who saw the cyclists as they approached E. 10th St. "Everyone picked up their bikes over their heads and started cheering. Some sat down in the street. The cops surrounded them in a line and they were picking them off from the back and arresting them."

Some witnesses said the arrests in the Village began when someone tossed some spaghetti at a cop.

"This whole thing is about peace," said one cuffed and disgruntled biker who identified himself as Jesse from Brooklyn. "I don't have a gripe with the police. I have a gripe with the RNC, although the cops were pretty rough."

Cops slapped plastic cuffs on the protesters' wrists while other officers snapped Polaroid photos of the detainees in what appeared to be bid to head off allegations of police brutality.

Two busloads of protesters were taken from the scene to a temporary jail on the West Side Highway while a flatbed truck was piled high with their confiscated bikes.

"They're trying to set the tone for the next week," suggested Annette Wilcox, 47, as she watched the protesters being hauled off. "If you sneeze the wrong way, they're going to arrest you."

A crowd three blocks deep gathered around the protesters last night, chanting, "Let them go!" as a helicopter hovered overhead.

But police said they had warned the riders for weeks they would be arrested if they blocked traffic.

"They were blocking intersections all along the way, backing up traffic," said top NYPD spokesman Paul Browne. "I personally witnessed several ambulances that couldn't get through. They had their lights and sirens on."

The ride, organized by an environmental group called Time's Up and dubbed "Critical Mass," is held in the city on the last Friday of every month but never near the scale of last night.

Thousands more protesters will take to the streets today. One group - denied its bid to rally in Central Park - is still planning to converge there today. Leaders of the ANSWER coalition have been passing out flyers informing protesters of their right to congregate in the park.

About 10,000 abortion-rights activists are expected to cross the Brooklyn Bridge in the 11 a.m. March for Women's Lives, which has a permit from the city.

Earlier yesterday, parks workers discovered the Van Cortlandt Golf Course in the Bronx, where a few GOP delegates were to play yesterday, had been vandalized with anti-Bush messages. "Extensive damage" was done to holes 15 through 18 and slogans were spray-painted on the grass, parks officials said. Repairs will cost $6,000.

'Whose streets? Our streets'

For an hour and a half last night, thousands of unruly cyclists had the run of some of Manhattan's most famous streets.
At each intersection, a few bikers would stop and block traffic, infuriating cabbies and other motorists.

Whistling, hooting and hollering, the pedalers turned the car-free streets into their own private playgrounds.

"It was fantastic," said Bismarck Decastillo, 39, a thrift store worker from the south Bronx. "The people protested, with freedom. When people can get together, we can do something."

"Whose streets? Our streets," was their slogan, repeated endlessly through the night.

Most pedestrians applauded and cheered, although a few gave one-fingered salutes. But the motorists honked in frustration.

On Houston St., bikers pounded on the windows of a black Mercedes-Benz they thought had driven recklessly through the weaving bicycles.

"A protest? What are they protesting - cabs?" asked one puzzled man as he watched the traffic-snarling procession.

The cyclists first headed south from Union Square down Broadway, bore west onto Houston St., turned north onto Sixth Ave., east onto W. 30th St. and north on Madison Ave. Then they turned west on Central Park South to Columbus Circle before heading down Broadway and Seventh Ave. through Times Square.

Cops held up traffic on W. 42nd St. to let the bikers through. But as the protesters reached W. 34th St. - just north of Madison Square Garden, site of the Republican National Convention - police quickly moved in and began making arrests for blocking traffic, stunning the crowd.

"We were standing there, and the police in riot gear came," said Becca Jensen, 22, of the East Village. "It was like it was planned. It was like they set us up."

2 NAILED IN HERALD SQ. SUBWAY BLAST PLOT

August 28, 2004 -- The convention will be held at Madison Square Garden, located over Penn Station and a block west of the Herald Square subway station. The busy station serves hundreds of thousands of daily riders on the B, D, F, V, N, Q, R and W lines.
Sources said the threat was taken so seriously by officials that it was mentioned this week in a Department of Homeland Security memo.

The plot unraveled when the NYPD's Intelligence Division began conducting surveillance earlier this year on a group of Muslim men in Brooklyn.

One of the men arrested yesterday had been thrown out of the group, sources said.

"Whether this is al Qaeda or an unstable lone wolf doesn't make much of a difference as to the danger," said a law enforcement official.

The men, described as being in their 20s, don't appear to be connected with Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network, sources said.

During the course of the investigation of the Brooklyn group, cops learned the two men had mentioned they wanted to bomb a train and went so far as to draw up sketches of the station, sources said.

One of the men arrested was also jailed for three days in February in connection with an immigration matter, sources said.

A spokesman for the Brooklyn U.S. Attorney's office did not return calls seeking comment.

At the bookstore, the father of one of the men said his son was called by cops around 3 p.m. to go to the local precinct station house to discuss dropping charges about a fight that took place in the shop two months ago.

"He went for some papers and never came back," the dad said. "I'm very upset."

The father said he went to the station house where cops told him the matter was "a federal case."

Terrorists have tried to bomb the subway system before.

In 1997, two Jordanian men were arrested in Brooklyn for planning to detonate pipe bombs at the Atlantic Avenue station.

Gazi Ibrahim Abu Mezer and Lafi Khalil were busted after cops — acting on a tip from a man who lived with the duo — burst into their Park Slope, Brooklyn, apartment and arrested them.

Abu Mezer was sentenced to life in prison in 1999 for trying to hatch the bomb plot.

Khalil was acquitted of being involved in the bomb plot, but sentenced to three years in prison in 1998 on immigration fraud charges.

Wave (and others on the NYPD)-

I'm curious as to what your more liberal associates think of all this. I used to sell police supplies and found that the politics of people in the LE community varried just as much as those of your average American. Certainly you all know of some Clinton/Kerry voters on the force, and probably several who are extremely anti-Bush (ya'll have a union right?). Have you talked to any of the anti-Bush cops about the protests and whatnot? I'd like to hear what they think about protestors who they agree with the message but not the means.

True anarchy does not mean that people can't come together for a common cause. It means that there should be no .gov to force them to. Anarchy is not about Mad Max wandering a post-war desert with his dog looking for gasoline, even though that's what most people think it is.

Norman that reminds of people I remember as kid going on about what "true" socialism meant, how great it really was and that it was unfortunate that the Soviet Union and it's slave states had perverted the "beauty" of "true socialism."

There are places like Somalia where the government has collapsed, strangely middle class college kids who espouse anarchy are not flocking there to have their chance at eating bugs, and being enslaved or shot by local warlords.

Yes, there is a kind of anarchy when things collapse and people or places or societies aren't ready for it. In that case you do wind up with the Mad Max scenario.

To me (or for me) Anarchy is more of an ideal, a goal if you will. This country is going in the complete wrong direction. We should not be adding laws but removing them.

and I'm not sure if you're trying to equate anarchy to socialism, but they are complete opposites. Socialism says the .gov will force you to "help" your neighbor, regardless of what you want to do. Anarchy says you do what you want.

Bear in mind, these protestors are not anarchists. They are kids with too much time and money on their hands, that are attracted to the idea of not having to live under any set of rules, and to the fact that there is a group of other people that, if they shout "anarchy" or paint a red "A" on their backpack, will instantly be their friends. These protests are to Anarchy what the Inquisition was to Christianity.

And NONE of this changes the fact that being an anarchist does not mean that you can't be organized with other people.

gives them the right to protest, while

the right of the people to keep and bear arms

only applies to the states to have a National Guard.

Heading into the city now. Going with the wife, heading down to Little Italy for some grub. I'm going to have a few beers and catch the sight's. Wonder if there will be any activity today?. I'm driving my gas guzzling, American made, 4x4 pickup in. With pro-bush and NRA stickers...guess I should find an indoor garage
