Quoted: It was BAD yesterday. Went out for a walk around 7pm. You could look directly at the sun it was that hazy. What was bizarre was you could still feel the sun. Apparently UV says fuck smoke. View Quote @Into_the_Void Yeah, it has to do with particle size and the wavelengths of light. Same reason the sky is blue. N2, O2, CO2, smidge of Argon, and the significant chunk of water vapor/H2O scatters the blue light wavelengths around because their wavelengths are around the size of the molecules. And the sun gets red at sunrise & sunset because you're seeing it through the thickest possible sideways line through the atmosphere, and not just 60 miles straight up like you do at noon. And even more of the blue and green get scattered away. Smoke particles do the same. If the wavelengths are longer than the particles, they go through like it's not there, same size or smaller, they get scattered. UV has a really short wavelength, so most everything scatters it, but enough always gets through unless smoke or clouds are really thick. My guess is that when smoke scattering is noticeable in sunlight, it "feels" or 'seems" less intense, which it is, but not as significant as one might think. You stay in the sun longer, don't seek shade as quickly, and it more than makes up for the small reduction in UV its providing. I know all my worst burns happened on hazy cool misty/foggy days where you're not thinking the sun's cooking you. |

I've got the overheads open in my shop, nice day temp wise....eyes are starting to burn. Like I got flash burned welding..gotta be a geography thing around here, really hanging on to the smoke.

Boom 203 at the 4pm update, but Scranton and Hop Bottom beat us for the worst air in the US. I bought a truck in Hop Bottom once....middle of fucking no where, and that's coming from a guy that lives in a town of like 500 people.

Quoted: Funny you say that, just looked across the valley in Stowe, I'm up about 1000 feet and yes there's a definite haze happening here too. That mountain in the distance is usually crystal clear from my vantage point. https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/87259/20230606_121410_jpg-2842116.JPG View Quote Are you looking toward Worcester in that pic? |

The haze has gotten much worse throughout the afternoon. Now the sun is all but choked out.

It's really bad here, we barely saw the sun all day and there wasn't a cloud in the sky.
By 10am I couldn't even seen the valley when driving down into town. It doesn't smell as bad in town as it does at my house, smells like perpetual camp fire. The kids are stuffy and my throat hurts. Closest monitor to me is reading 182 right now. Firmly in the "unhealthy" range.....cool. |

Just got back from Vancouver. Clear as a bell up there. Aside from my flight in, I'm glad the jet stream goes East. Holy fuck it was turbulent.

It's horrible in PA here. I thought the neighbor's house was on fire there's so much smoke.
|

Driving home from work at 4 pm, people have their headlights on. Can barely see the sun, it's just a little orange dot.
I'm hoping for some rain to help |

We may have to cancel our golf trip to Binghamton next week 24 golfers .

They didn't let the kids outside for recess today, and they cancelled a pretty big annual parade.
My parents were supposed to have a float in it, it was all ready to go. |

Stop your whining easterners! You should see what california does to the PNW every august with out of control FF's!

Quite hazy in northern NH. Must be pretty serious up there in Canuckistan.
