From St Pete Times:

Emergency officials recommended the largest evacuation in Pinellas County history Thursday as the forecast for Hurricane Charley called for it to make landfall in the Tampa Bay area.

Panama City checking in...  We got a total of about 5 inches of rain in 24 hours, no wind to really speak of.  I was watching the weather channel guy on tv saying how bad it was here ....  that was about two hours ago.  It's about 85 degrees and sunny now.  Bonnie really swung to the east at the end there.

That's good to hear.  My inlaws have a house on the beach right off of Thomas Drive. I'll let them know it wasn't that bad. They have some renters in it this week.

Did you catch the gal on the weather channel this morning, "checking in" from Panama City?
Fruckin hillarious stuff- she was wearing a full storm jacket w/hood, bracing herself against the 15mph gusts-- she said in a really serious voice "THINGS ARE TAKING A TURN FOR THE WORSE HERE IN PANAMA CITY, WITH GUSTS UP TO 15MPH."  Even the guy that checked in after her was laughing...
I damn near spit my coffee across the room it was so hysterical.
That being said, I'm still ready for damn near anything to go down tonight/tomorrow.

Here at the aircraft hangar I work at in Jacksonville, they are using forklifts to put everything outside, including supply shacks, inside the hangar.  Aircraft from around the county are being ferried over to be put indoors, and I think the Coast Guard is doing the same thing down the street.

Everyone here is preparing for a worst case scenario.

I will be staying here tonight, and parking my vehicle in the middle of the parking lot, away from all trees and power lines.

I'm a L.E.O. and live in the Tampa Bay area.  I work on the beach in Pinellas County.

I got off of work at 0600 hrs today.  I haven't been to bed yet.  Getting the house ready for the storm.  Charley is going to go right over us.

Going back into work at 2000 hrs till it's over.  Should have some fun tonight and tomorrow.  At least it's O.T..

I've been through a few bad storms but no direct hits.  Hurricane Elaina in 1985 was pretty bad.  Worked three days without rest of food.

Talk to you when I get home.

Man, O , Man ,

That sattelite photo brings back memories.  I was with the 1/124 Inf. FLNG as a platoon leader.  We were activated for several weeks.  I think I'll dig out my Hurricane Andrew video and nuke some popcorn tonight.

Peolpe were definitly not prepared to be self-sufficient. Mob mentality rules , tempers flare.  My brother lives in Bonita Springs I called him today and told him to by a gun.

By the way if you watch the Andrew video I'm the one grappling with the looter yelling "get the gun, he's got a gun"

Times like these having a Jeep really pays off, huh HAWKEYE? I love driving around in the high water while most people get stuck and break down!

Went to Walmart and it was suprisingly quiet. Got a kitty prison and an extra cooler.
Ha ha I laughed when the guy showed me all the flashlights they had left. One maxi maglite, three cheapie 2ds, and three mini mags. No D batteries though! Aha, I already have plenty and a backup twelve volt sustem in the trailer.
I'm gonna load up my Camelbak Hawg with gatorade and supplies tonite in case I have to move to the bunker. I got MREs in the bunker.
If my trailer handles the wind I'll be ok. Its a high end fith wheel so its pretty strong and all the glass is tempered auto glass. I hoping and staying put.
It all depends where it makes landfall. The farther north the better for me. Anywhere north of Tampa Bay and I think I'll be allright.
I think I'll break out the 10/22 and .38. Hope I remember where I put those bullets.

Glad to hear you're okay Hawkeye.  We get Orlando via cable and Chan.6 showed video of your twister.  It was absolutely NOT one of those little land-locked water spouts we have sometimes - definitely a nasty sucker!  Buckle down for the next round and stay safe.

Looking good here for now.  The sand-crabs haven't crossed A1A yet soooooo....

Would appreciate any update from the Cape Coral (Ft. Myers ) area. I am involved with a Condo development project that is about midway through completion. I have a feeling that by the end of the weekend, I will be back to square one. More importantly, good luck to all in Florida. I really hope this thing passes everyone without any major damage or loss of life. Prayers sent

We got the first outer band at about 0230. It was bad sideways rain and heavy wind. It calmed down by I'd guess 4am.

Its just grey and a lil windy at the moment. I guess it will start heavy for us around 12 with the eye next to us at around 1400.

I lucked out.  At least I won't be on the beach when it comes in.

I worked from 2000 till 1030 hrs..  They sent me home to ride out the storm.  We live about 10 miles from the Gulf.  On the evacuation map, my house is right in the middle of the High and Dry area.  When we have a real heavy rain, I don't even get standing puddles.

We  just have to worry about the high winds and junk blowing around.

Time to eat and try to get some sleep before I go back in after the storm passes (if I don't get blown away).

I hope everyone in Florida and the future path of Charley  gets through this SAFELY.

Well...  it's headed straight for me. I've done all I can do in preparation but I'm still not sure I'm ready for 10-12 hours of 100+ mph winds. Guess I'm going to find out pretty soon.

Right now it's spooky calm outside.

I'll try to keep ya'll posted.....

I will update what I can while I have power.
Winds have picked up quite a bit. Tornado watch in Hendry county. All the barrier islands were given a mandatory evac as well as parts of Punta Gorda, but some folks chose to stay .

They are saying the barrier islands have also had the Pd Fire And EMS leave.  Even the news reports they will not resond to emergency calls untill the storm is over. They are expecting all of Sanibel island to be under water.

Here on the "mainland" they are reporting emergency services will not respond to calls in areas where the wind is greater than 40 MPH.

Yesterday, they were saying, if you wanted to leave to do it then. Now, they just issued a voluntary evac for south Cape Coral and part of FT Myers. They said it would effect 80-100,000 people.

They said the water surge is now guessed to be 3 or so ft higher than expected. Wind speed is at 110mph. At 111 it becomes a catagory three.

Sorry that this post is jumbled, Im adding as they are reporting also. If anything worthy happens, Ill try and post again.
