Since I've got the entire N Texas HTF in this thread, I'll invite y'all to one of the three gun shows we're having this weekend once the roads clear:
https://www.ar15.com/forums/t_8_8/620050_3-5-February-Waco-Azle-Mesquite-gun-shows-dinner-Sat-night.html RebleYell will be coming down from Oklahoma Friday to set up in Mesquite, along w/ tacton, who also has a table - tacton deals in FN, Colt, & some PSA bits. Last I saw he had a complete FN A2 upper, but he may have sold it. RebleYell does medical kits, see him Saturday afternoon for dinner plans. I'm going to zip down to Waco Friday afternoon to catch the Waco antique/C&R show that has more Winchesters & Colt SAAs per sq foot than Tulsa does. It's a small show, IM me if you'd like a ride down & back. I'll be set up in Azle for the weekend & will miss the ARFCOM dinner Sat night. I try and keep the thread updated w/ all the shows from Abilene to Shreveport & the Red River to Waco, as far out as those dates have been published. Generally we do dinner on Saturday nights w/ some dealers, usually in D/FW but sometimes as far afield as Longview. |

Quoted: A few things for our Southern friends to know. I've never seen studded tires once in Minnesota. Zero. Rarely does someone have snow tires, I'd say 98% of the cars on the roads here have all season tires. There is no such thing as Southern ice. We get ice storms here too. Probably more than you do. Black ice is not what you call black ice. Black ice is formed at intersection from idling car exhaust. This can happen on clear cool days like today when it is -10 before wind chill. Black ice does not fall from the sky, that is just ice. I fully understand why a winter storm causes major chaos down there. There is not the infrastructure for mass fast plowing and salting. When it snows here we have way more plows to deal with it. But, it seems like there is basically no money spent down there at all. It is not like a snow storm is a once in a lifetime event down in the Dallas area. It looks like snow and below freezing is an annual event. Plowing and salting a couple of the main interstates shouldn't be THAT difficult. I can certainly see side roads and highways being a mess for days. There is still no excuse for the absolute shit drivers from Texas though. I see them driving terrible in the summer with their flashers on during a sprinkle. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted: Quoted: In addition to cities not being really prepared for it (though the DFW area usually gets some snow every winter), the inhabitants aren't prepared for it. No Hakipellitas or however you spell it, no snow tires, certainly no studded snow tires or chains usually. You're lucky if most people have within-wear guidelines M+S tires. Moreover, there's plenty of idiots who think they can drive in snow/ice, the same way they drive in the much more often torrential downpours. All adds up to staying at home. In Houston, we often don't even have sand, the once every couple years we get snow/ice. The giant Belt and Grand Parkway onramps look like skating rinks. No good. EDIT: Pretty sure I got caught in the one Findsman is talking about. Nothing like creeping at literally 5-10 MPH on the causeway into South Dallas on 45...and still hearing your tires occasionally slip. Some poor bastard was towing a pontoon boat behind a non-snow/ice optimized 2500. I still remember the sounds his tires made as they parted company with traction, and he proceeded on an all-wheel straight slide towards the right end lanes... Minnesota outlawed studded tires in the late 1960s or early 1970s. Studded tire statute The roads were being chewed up by studs. I vaguely remember they were legal only during the winter. I think there was an exact season where they were allowed. Minnesota first snow always has it's increase in accidents from people forgetting how to drive in it, newcomers to the north, and visitors. A friend of a friend grew up in Minnesota, and was visiting a warm weather state when they had a freak snow/ice storm. The friend's friend went out to the store to get something, and had no problem stopping/starting/turning. They turned around and went home when they realized how dangerous it was for them. They were stopped at a 4-way stop sign when cars slid through the intersection in front of them, and then a car slid by them into the intersection. Just because you can drive in bad weather, doesn't mean you are safe from others. |
