With the guns, ammo, holsters, and information available at the time?
Probably a Colt Detective Special with +P JHPs. Leather OWB holster at 3 o clock. Clothing choices would be a little different, but not much. |

Colt Detective in .38 Special 2”, “because semi-automatics will jam at a critical moment, wheel guns always go bang and you’ll never need more than five or six rounds,” followed by a bunch of approving head nods from fellow gun experts unless they were 1911 cult members.

Quoted: No poll. Qualify your answer. I was rolling a SIG P226 but would carry a P7 if I had one back then. View Quote |

Quoted: If by leisure suit you mean cowboy cuts and a t shirt with a unlined denim jacket, it's always in style and you're not my supervisor. Quoted: I didn't exist yet in 1985, however I currently have two guns in my collection that were around in that time period, which would have made excellent carry guns- the Star PD (.45 ACP) and Charter Arms Bulldog Pug (.44 SPL). Both of them are guns that I have carried. The Charter was my primary carry gun for a while. Both conceal nicely and are reliable. The Star is very accurate. However, neither gun is one that I would want to use for any volume of training because of the materials/ manufacture. For routine practice, I would use a 1911 as a stand in for the Star (again something that I have done in modern times- I shoot the Star sparingly), and some other DA revolver as a trainer for the Charter. View Quote Charter Arms Bulldogs existed, I still have one from 81. |

Quoted: I've been meaning to do a thread like this, where people can share stories they heard about other people carrying before permits. I think people now adays get so caught up in laws that are damaging to their personal well-being, some perspective would be enlightening. View Quote I carried in my glove compartment which was legal and most places I was walking it was legal on my hip. Couldn't take it in the mall though...damn. |

I was 2 years old so something lightweight and easy to operate with smaller hands like a S&W Model 29.

Quoted: browning hi power chambered in 9mm luger. View Quote My choice as well. Browning introduced their Mark 2 in 1982...I probably would have been talking shit about plastic guns, big-ass pistols like the Beretta 92F for CCW, and bragging on my 13+1 capacity over 1911's. Oh, and I would be watching Magnum PI ROCK6 |
|
Probably a BHP, CZ75 if I could've gotten ahold of one, possibly a Makarov.
But realistically a 3" S&W of some flavor. |
|
My dad had a blued Walther PPK/S back then. He knew a guy with a Walther P5, which was nice too.
So I'll say one of those. With a Bren Ten in a shoulder rig for special occasions. Hopefully one with magazines. |

1911 in the Lord’s caliber.
Edit. Read that as 1965 not 1985. Opinion doesn’t change. |

Quoted: Colt 1911 because I am a boomer and it works.. View Quote Yeah, in 1985 I was carrying a Colt Combat Commander in .45 acp. And completely happy with it. I also had a Ruger Speed Six .357 stainless with the 2&3/4" barrel. It was a sometimes "carry in my jacket pocket" gun from my duty coat a few years earlier. Winter time, heavy duty coat, bobbed hammer Speed Six in my right coat pocket and two speed loaders of 125 grain hollow points in the left coat pocket. |

Beretta 70s - .380 Beretta 92s - I’d upgrade to a 92sb or 92f but not sure if availability would be an issue in 1985, probably for sure the 92f wouldn’t widely be on civilian market at that time. S&w .357 mag- 3-4” barrel |

Well, in 1987, it was a Browning Hi-Power MkIII, so in 1985, probably a MkI, or a MkII if I could find it for sale in 1985. I'd spend the money for a good holster this time though, knowing what I know now.

A S&W 469, which still gets some carry time today. In reality, I toted a Rossi revolver in 1985, when I carried sans license. I was a poor back then, but that .38 special wasn't a bad gun.

Only handgun I owned in that era was a .357 Ruger Blackhawk.
