What's a good CA price?
Where to look?
What to check the gun for?

I'd appreciate any thoughts or whims on this subject.

Do your old man right and get him one from the CMP. http://www.odcmp.com/  Then you know you will get a good rifle at a great price. There are a few hoops you have to jump through but it's not that hard.

Have yet to hear anything good about Century Arms M1 Garands, sold at Turners.  But then haven't tried one either.

Best bet is a CMP rifle.

Make it a father & son team and get one of those DCM Garands together.  It would be fun!
You can't go wrong with a DCM Garand.  I have seen a lot of junkers out there, worn barrels, loose & broken handguards etc.

My CMP gun is great.

The only "gunshow special" M1 Garand I've seen was a piece of crap, jam-o-matic.

I like the idea of a father-son CMP qualification shoot and ordering your rifles.  Sounds like a great experience, not just a gift.
