A whole other when we don't have the specialists that are largely behind the scenes keeping this country moving. Supply lines disintintigrating. Lack of critical components. I hope I'm wrong. I think the US is going to have a lot of problems in 20 years, but it isn't going to be because we can't get enough talent together to keep the grid running.
There's plenty of talent in the US if you're willing to pay them enough money. The problem with the labor market right now is after 50 years of wage stagnation smart people aren't working for wages, and when they are, it isn't the wages that get them in to work every morning. Failing to invest in critical infrastructure for so long is clearly going to bite us in the ass though. |

A gazillion fast food restaurants in 20 years? Maybe not. Too many low-skill people not working getting stoned.
A functional grid in 20 years? Do I really have to dignify the question with any kind of answer? |

Quoted: I hate it but I’m sure they are too cheap to buy anything American made View Quote Funny thing, China hired zee Germans to build their new million-volt DC grid backbone. We make fun of China all the time but they've been building infrastructure like mad, irrigating their deserts, building nuclear plants, next-gen transmission systems, on and on. The US has a 300% tariff on Chinese solar products, panels are dirt cheap in China and they're putting them up by the millions. |

In my field (Computer Security), we are paying well into the 6 figures and have a hard time getting anyone that is semi-competent. Think Zeihan marches to the tune that we are 400K people short each year for the next 10 years when we reach 900K short due to all the boomer retiring. |

Quoted: The lock downs and "distance learning" will have crazy consequences on that gen View Quote The lockdowns will surely have some kind of effect - most likely more distrust and animosity toward government and authority in general - as seen by the increasing levels of lawlessness. And I’m still amazed at the number of people who think that “distance learning” robbed their children of a year of education. The “education” the kids get in a “normal” year is barely different than what they got during “distance learning.” Parents saw the lack of substantive material and generally poor quality of the education when they were learning from home and assumed it was just lousy because it was being done remotely. Reality is public education is just…horrible. Government screws up everything it touches and does NOTHING well…and yet conservatives continue to give that same government unrestricted, unsupervised access to their children for 7 hours a day, for 12 to 14 YEARS of their life, and actually think they’re doing a GOOD job with that. LOL. |

We have PLENTY of natural gas in the US. The US will always have power.

Quoted: I plan to have electricity. For about the price of a nice car you can set yourself up with a solar system to run your house. If you really think the electrical system will fail, you should probably get your own power system. View Quote Link? Seriously. I'm about to spend 13k for power into my property. If I could do it with solar , off grid. Wind , whatever I'm all in. |

And some of us in the industry know just how easy it would be to cripple large sections of infrastructure as you would know if you were in the industry. I am always amazed at how weak utilities are in being proactive in, well, pretty much everything because any dollars that were shifted toward that would come out of their pocket. Except for the very occasional incident, no group has ever seriously targeted the utility industry. |

I hope I'm wrong. But I'd love to see an industry that was fully staffed. Or an industry that could get inventory in normal lead times. Or an Car manufacturer that had normal inventory. Hopefully these issues are like inflation. Transitory.

View Quote Off grid is going to cost you more than that, but if I were in your shoes I'd go for it, you'll get subsidies, the $13K you're in it anyway, TX is a good place for solar and energy isn't going to get cheaper. Look at supply houses for what stuff costs. The solar installation companies are one step above thieves around here, they charge triple what the equipment costs and it doesn't take a lot of man hours to install the stuff. Tesla is actually the exception, they're the industry price leader believe it or not, if they install in your area. |
