Never seen that befo, and I've seen some shit. Can't imagine it was very tight.

Measure the threads and get a normal bolt.

Curious what it came off of.

Figure out what the threads are and replace it with a normal bolt.

Aside from replacing it with a normal bolt, if you can get a hammer and punch in there to tap it tight, I'd just use that.

That is a fastener I've never seen before, and I've seen some unusual ones.  I'm curious to know if it was intended to be that way, and was supplied that way on a piece of machinery.

I don’t think that would work with the “reverser” that I use.

This is exactly the same thing I thought of to at least give a shot.  $10 for something to have around on the odd occasions you find something like that, or an eyebolt or a wing nut and other strange.

That 3/4" size, or whatever the default is, is too small for the eye bolts I need to drive in but it barely catches them and works.   I'm thinking of getting the 1 1/4", and they have both sizes as a kit for $24 @ Amazon

Gator Grips are awesome for eyebolts and hooks, not sure I have actually used it for anything other than that though.

There is a little wrench that looks a lot like a hydrant wrench for those spawns of the devil. We had them on some control boxes when I worked for L3, almost 20 years ago. If I remember right, a tap handle worked in a pinch. I dont remember any sockets though.

Ill hunt through my tools and see if I still have one in the AM.

I've never seen a socket for those bolts either.

This is the wrench I've used on them:

Find a socket that is barely too small, heat up socket with torch until it is bright red, hammer socket onto bolt.

You now have a custom made socket that fits perfectly.

Do you guys actually still use the old SF skeleton keys anywhere?  I only know of one lock "near" me that still uses it, but it's at a different terminal.

Well, we were the BN before the merger so no, we never used ATSF locks of any kind up here. At the time of the merger, we did still have a bunch of the old BN Adlake locks that used brass keys still in use and into the 2000s. But I think the last of them disappeared about 10-15 years ago. Everything is the S&G high security environmental lock now. I quit carrying the brass key on my gear a long time ago. I do still have a bunch on my master key ring that stays in my grip. That key on my vest is BNSF marked and fits the BN Adlake type locks. I noticed it laying in the ballast last year and picked it up and put it on the ring with my 105 and locomotive keys just because.

When I was working in Texas on former ATSF territory in 1997, it seemed like all they were using was the old Adlake style locks. Pretty sure the S&G 105 lock has been standardized everywhere now.

Weirdly enough, I think the CN still has the Adlake style locks in widespread use. I have various CN and CP keys from when I worked in Canada.

I would not go that far, they may also have a standard  thread pitch since whomever went through so much trouble to have a special head made.

I'm guessing it is custom made specifically for the equipment manufacturer of the equipment you found it on.

The manufacturer may or may not offer sockets to fit it, but my guess would be they don't make them available to the public.

If you let us know the equipment manufacturers name, it may help.

Regardless, if/when you do find the name of that specific bolt head type, please update this thread for those of us who are curious.

There are better versions of needle sockets. If the torque required is low enough, that one will probably work. Proprietary security sockets seem like a good idea at the time.

Yeah, I know where. I use a penta socket everyday.

Pedestals and transformers (pad mounts) use that exclusively .

You don't have to buy those. If you drive around and pay attention, soon enough you will find one sitting on top of a padmount or still on the bolt head.

I can't believe Arfcom is stumped.  Strange times are afoot.  (...runs to recheck asteroid impact projections...)

ETA: only possible explanation is that this tool is of extraterrestrial origin, placed on Earth to confuse and confound the population in preparation for upcoming domination.  It is well beyond our current technology to produce - further bolstered by the Machinist's Theorem: "If it's not in the McMaster Carr catalog, it doesn't exist".
