The Roc was a strange one - much preferred the Bolton Paul Defiant - a real cutie, with a sting in the tail!

The Defiant was a good looking airplane, but after the surprise wore off, the 109s tore them up.

The CRJ is the greatest airplane of all time. It forever transformed airline travel as we know it.

I knew a good few Lancaster pilots
A few relatives I never met were Lancaster aircrew, killed on missions
Worked with a lot of their groundcrew in later decades
The plane was a total beast that delivered the goods and could keep going in a lot of trying situations.
Pilots I know who were on Lancs totally loved them - they were a dream to fly

Development of the Lanc. swallowed a massive, and I mean massive, proportion of the total UK spending in WW2.
The Lancaster bomber focused air offensive from 1942 onwards is estimated - in WW2 figures - to have cost just under £2.8 Billion (there were between 4 to 5 US dollars to the UK Pound back then).

Believe me, I'm not knocking the Lancaster and what it did. It's just that the aesthetic contrast between it and the major British fighters is a sharp one. The Spitfire was a flying work of art, the Mosquito was very elegant looking, and even the Hurricane, Typhoon, and Hurricane were really good looking planes. The Lancaster just has a very utilitarian look that's more in line with what we tended to build (IMO, the Lightning and B17 were the only really stylish major American combat aircraft of the war).

Sure, if you want to go beyond WWII. The Vulcan is a great looking aircraft. Such a giant delta wing is just cool. But I think the Vulcan's sister V-series HP80 has the most elegant lines of its era.

Holy shit... 1st page, no Habu??? WTF??? THAT is the only RIGHT answer. If we're talking flying machines in general... the Saturn V is right there for sheer HP alone. But nothing that ever flew was more badass or so far ahead of its time than the SR71.

In the top three - DC-3, C-130, and C-17.

I would probably put the C-130 at the bottom of the list.

Why the C-17?  I'm ignorant of why it's such a great aircraft.

Just like how the A10 was a plane built around the gun, the EE Lightning was two engines and a cockpit with some wings and a metal skin added as an afterthought.
