Congrats! Please keep us posted. Right now, I feel like it’s a 33.3% probability you succeed and win it all, and 33.3% you break something important and 33.3% you just go back to your old ways and maybe putter around on weekends,
Too bad we can’t place bets. Either way, I wish you the best. It’s good to have a goal. |

Quoted: I suspect you're gonna want to revisit your anti-exercise, anti-healthy eating platform after about 5 minutes ripping on the bike. Not sure which happens first: arm pump vs out of breath View Quote You nailed it. My first 15 minutes of riding today. This elephant is gonna take awhile to wolf down, but I am gonna take it one bite at a time. |

Quoted: A 125 is a great way to get back into the swing if things! View Quote I formed quite a few bad habits over the past few years riding solely a heavy adventure bike, and I bought myself a CRF450RL to try and correct that. A broken wrist, shoulder, and thumb on the other hand makes me think I bit off a bit more than I should have taken. Not sure if I'll be able to get out again this season, but next time I'll be taking out the smaller and lighter Yamaha 125 and starting from scratch. |

Quoted: rad. I'm picking up my first moto this year at 45. Been racing mountain bikes for almost 25 years so I am hoping that helps me out on my transition to gas. Skipping the whole e-bike thing, they cost almost as much as the beta 390 rr-s I'm picking up! View Quote Good luck! As an old MX announcer I once knew was fond of saying: "Keep your wheels on the ground, and your feet on the pegs." |

It's like a kid's bike, only smaller... Joking Have fun, we only go around once.

Quoted: Just turned 40 and did the same thing OP, except I bought an older YZ250 and didn't really have plans on racing. I got a lot of shit from my GF and a few buddies. Ignore it and enjoy doing what you like, life is short. My bike https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/101611/20210816_200130_jpg-2103769.JPG View Quote Yeah....I shoulda bought used, but they are hard to find and cost more than I am willing to pay, so I just impulse bought the hell out of this new one. |
|
I raced a 125 YZ when I was a kid.
And I'd like to do it again someday. |
|
I've admittedly been out of the game for a decade, but a 125 smoker sounds like a lot of work to go fast.
- washed up 450 C class guy Have fun with it! |

BraaaapshiftBraaaaaaaaaaaaaapshiftBraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaapshiftBraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaapshiftBraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap-disappearing into the sunset in a cloud of dust and pre-mix
and that is how life gets better, a little at a time Did much the same thing at over 40yrs. young, no regrets, only one ACL surgery, continued to ride for a bit after, but not as much fun worrying about that down time! The protective gear available now is far superior to what was used 10-20 years ago, GET A LEATT BRACE, maybe some armor for knees and stuff, have fun kick ass and all that stuff! |
|
You’re going to die, OP. But it is your life to live as you choose, and that does sound like a hell of a lot of fun.
I hope it turns out to be the most enjoyable thing you’ve ever done. Good luck! |
|
You'll be fine. Its like riding a bike....wait it is riding a bike (with an engine).
Nice looking bike too. |

1978 Riverdale Raceway 450 Maico
Now I put on a 79YZ400 on the farm. I still get brave, but when you do you better be ready to get bit. I love old 2 stroke power, Big rear sprocket. I still wear my Full Bores. Get all the best armor, boots. |
|
My guess is you will be on a 450F before very long.
My username may give you a hint how I know… |

If it makes you happy and gives you motivation go for it!
This thread got me thinking about buying a dirt bike, then reality struck. I’m much more likely to buy a wheelchair. Have fun but remember, old men don’t bounce when we fall.?? |
|
Last time I rode a dirt bike I put my foot down in a corner and caught a root and kicked myself in the back of the head.
Just have to look at one now and everything starts to hurt. Good luck OP. |
|
You’re too ugly for an open casket anyways…
I kid! Thinking about a 125 myself. |
|
Screw the haters OP! I'm 47 and I still ride a dirt bike. All the naysayers fall in one of these categories: 1. wife/mom won't let them ride 2. one of the poors 3. pussies |

|
Good for you, OP. You ain't dead until you're in the ground.
Try to take it slow, buddy. Be smart and know your limitations. |

I had my dirt bike as an adult around 30.
Fucked up my shoulder for life. |
|
Riding MX and especially Enduro was one of the most rewarding things I've ever been into.
My body will never fully recover though |
|
|
When I raced hare scrambles, some of those Vet class guys seemed very fast. So, goood luck and have fun.
|
|
I bought a bicycle right before I turned 50...with diet and long rides I went from 270 to 165. Im 56 now and I race road, gravel and MTB. So yeah your plan sounds good to me.
The couch and that bag of cheetos will kill you faster than most sports |

As mid-life crisis purchases go, don't feel bad about that one. Just don't make the mistake I did and get addicted to a certain species of German sports cars. It seems the first is never your last.
I still have the motorcycle endorsement on my license, but I haven't ridden in decades because there's just too many assholes in pickups around here. Plus, the weather can be a bear except for short windows around here. |

Right there with you man. Here is what's against you, some you can counter, some you cannot.
1. Age 2. Weight - can be resolved with discipline. You don't look to far gone. 5-6 months I could have you slimmed to perfection 3. Eye Sight - probably not as good as it once was. Nothing you can do about that other than wear glasses. This will effect what you see and how you can react 4. Reflexes - speaking to 3 above - your reflexes and not what they were. This has to do with age, weight, and eyesight. Nothing is really going to improve with this. You can make adjustments above that may help but typically as you age your reflex or speed deteriates. 5. Muscle support - as you age your testosterone levels are reduced. This makes it more difficult to gain/maintain muscle mass. You can supplement if you choose to but you are going to have work extra hard to put on muscle and maintain it. Diet is key here. 6. Bones - as you age your bones are more brittle. Nothing can do about that. You may experience breaks more easily. 7. Recovery- as you age your recovery times are extended. Something that may have not effected you years ago my take a day now. Some things that would have take you a week will take months. Nothing you can do about this. There is probably more but I am tired of writing. I wish you the best of luck and my only real advice - ease into Man. Your mind is probably younger than your body so if you go to fast into this you will end up hurt and then discouraged. Controlling this is hard to do. If you really want to do this at any level you need to train harder than what you are currently thinking you do - trust me. |

You will soon realize that it hurts to fall down and when you do it takes forever to heal.
Eta: ex CR 125 racer here. |

I am also old enough to know better... but I race dirt bikes, not motor cross, but cross country (hare scramble). It is tough, I get hurt from time to time and most Mondays I wonder why I did it, but while on the bike and ripping through the woods I know that I wouldn't live life any other way.

Quoted: My wife says she didn't realize I was serious. My 75 y/o dad swears it is the product of my realizing I am now middle age and my effort to rebel against it. My two older brothers think I'll crash and burn and end up in the ER before the end of the year. A little back story: Back in the late 80's and 90's, I was a motocross rider. I was fairly decent at it, too - enough so to gave sponsors and very limited factory support. But that was over 25 years ago! I am past my optimal weight, I feel like shit because I HATE going to the gym, and I eat bad. So last week, I made a promise to myself, I am going to get into motocross shape again. I am going to race the Vet class on my brand new YZ125X. I hope I can be competitive eventually. I'd like to win a race someday soon. Soon being probably 6 months to a year of training and practicing. Got my first good ride in today and I feel it already, but in a good way! The endorphins are still pumping, though. Tomorrow gon' hurt! Anyway, here it is. That's my happy, out of shape ass on the left, and my Dad, the one-time best MX dad/mechanic/sponsor in all of Northeast Texas! https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/12951/IMG_2759_jpg-2103722.JPG https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/12951/IMG_2759_jpg-2103723.JPG View Quote At your age this is, in my opinion, one of the most foolish things you could do and I’ll wait for the inevitable crash and burn laying in the hospital thread. |

I started riding at 39 to hang with my son. Dont listen to the nay sayers. Enjoy yourself and know your limitations. When you wanna sell it let me know
|

Do yourself a big favor and get all of the legit protective gear. And I dont mean the lightweight roost protectors. Get the good stuff that is CE rated. It's hot in the summer, but it'll typically save you for when you go down. Got my dad back into it at 70 and while he can't keep up at a competitive pace, he still has a blast just getting out trail riding and exploring, and it's gotten him into way better shape.
