If she doesn't have any experience with firearms I would get her a .38 revolver. With a revolver you don't have to worry about feeding malfunctions.

A 38 rev or a glock 17 in 9mm. I would favor the revolver, depending if she is comfy loading mags

I would also recommend a .38 revolver. Glocks are nice, but I've seen more than one female have difficulty racking the slide as forcefully as is needed to properly chamber a round (yes, even a Glock 17).

.50 BMG thompson contender. Hell on the recoil, but it only takes one shot of .50 to kill anybody. The contender is simple and will not jam!

I go along with the guys who recommended a revolver. I also think the .38 Spl. or a .357 Mag using .38 Spl. ammo would be the best caliber choice.
We're talking about a pistol for a beginner. Low recoil, simple design, easy to use, with adequate power. I think the .38 Spl. revolver meets these requirments. DaMan |

Go for the .357 revolver. Have her practice with .38, but then she needs .357 for the defensive round. Why? Under the stress situation, she won't notice if the load is a light .38, or some monster heavy .357 used for taking down elephants. On the other side, though, the perp will definitely experience a bit more on the receiving end.
Additionally, a semi-auto just isn't gonna be the gun for her until she's actually used it for a while. Women like the simple idea of a revolver. Semi-autos seem too complicated for the ladies. In closing, kudos to you and your mom, take her out to the range a few times, and show her off. There are many guys out there that don't think they can find any women to shoot, let alone their wife, mom, or daughter. Every guy should be doing this... I know I take my wife... what about the rest of you??? |

Yeah, what these guys said. Revolver that will shoot 38 Special AND 357 Magnum. Simple yet very effective on potential perpetrators.

I also thing the revolver is the way to go.
If she is not going to be carrying it, I would go with a full frame .357 revolver. I prefer the Ruger GP-100, but I bet Taurus makes some nice models. If a Smith fits her best, as much as I hate to say it, get what she wants. The weight of the full frame will really tame .38 recoil and will help with the full power .357 loads. It also has a phychological factor to bad guys (I think) to see a large gun pointed at them. If it is for home defense, I would reccomend blued to so it does not reflect light and give her away. just one mans opinion |

I also suggest a .357 revolver with a 4" barrel.
But there in no need to scare her with "Its a magnum Mom!!" Let her use .38s at first with the target close then as she gets better up the loads a bit to +p and move the target out some By the time you get to 25 yards she will be working with full house .357 loads and enjoying it. I trained my wife and all three daughters in this way. Rew |

I agree with above. Get a .357 and fill it with .38 specials. The extra heft of the .357 frame will help with the recoil. A revolver is easy to use and learn on. Maybe a Ruger SP101 or a used Smith "K" frame.

Make it unanimous or however you spell it. .357 Revolver, if she can handle it use .357's in 125 gr, if not, use Cor-bon 110 gr, if she can't handle that use .38 Nyclad's.

With a Tec-9 you can protect your home, bust a cap in your play mates ass, pretend you have a real machine gun and get the undying respect of your home boys on the play ground. |

How old is your mom? Has she handled a firearm before? Does she have arthritis?
1911 might be too much for her. I agree with most everyone here, I think you might think about a .38 revolver. If she is more up to speed, a Glock 19 or 26. |

It all depends on what will she be defending herself from, and how proficient she is with the gun. For “average” home defense, it is hard to go wrong with a revolver; I would suggest a Taurus in .357 magnum in either 2 ½ or 4” barrel; loaded with some 158 gr, semi jacketed hollow points.

Get her a double barrelled 20ga. Nothing talks louder than a shotgun. No brain training either. Easy to load, easy to shoot easy to unload/safe. Odds are she won't need more than two rounds anyway. If she does need more than two rounds, then she needs training to survive contact like that. Cut it down to the legal limit. A 20ga doesn't kick anywhere near as much as a 12, and a two handed gun is much easier to use than a handgun. She doesn't need to conceal it, and without training she shouldn't be going around clearing the house anyway. So, there shouldn't be much concern of a longer gun getting unmaneuverable in the house. She should hole up in the beadroom with a side-by-side and call the cops on the cell phone.
