District 9 is the best cinematic display of the human factor to date, IMO. It’s deeper than it’s face value leads one to believe. Watch it thinking about this and your will see.

District 9 is such a powerful, thought provoking film that stays with you long after you've seen it.
When I saw District 9 in the theaters(sold out show), the credits rolled, you could hear a pin drop in the theater. Everyone just stayed frozen in their seats. Now I have to watch the movie out of pure principle. |

Underrated movie. I didn’t Get any social justice warrior shit out of it. I think it’s pretty realistic as to how we would treat aliens in a similar situation. Humans are kind of big ass holes. The “evil” government could just as well be left wing than right wing. I mean look at look what’s going on in the United States right now.........
Chappie was kind of odd but entertaining. It had that weirdo South African rap artist blonde chick in it. She is crazy. Elysium wasn’t awful. I guess it’s a good example of perspective and seeing what you want. That movie to me showed a big tech left wing aristocracy and everyone else on Earth the result of rampant socialism. Socialism always ends up with someone on top, and the majority in a slum. |

I wouldn’t call it a “bad” movie, but it didn’t live up to the hype either. One small notch above mediocre, if only for the originality.
Bought the dvd based on rave reviews here years ago; wish I had rented instead |

loved it, really original and really well done.
I'm waiting for District 10 |

One of my favorite sci fi movies, regardless of the apartheid undertones.
Makes me hate blomkamp for not doing the sequel. I've liked everything I've seen from blomkamp |
|
Blokamp is pretty "woke," the moral allegory isn't as heavyhanded as Elysium, but it's pretty obvious.
But it's a decent movie. |
|
I love that movie. My ex is South African. She used to say "fookin' prawns" for my entertainment.

Mostly because it moves too quick, and doesn't allow thought to keep up, and a few challenges at every turn that delays moving on. Being set in South Africa wasn't an accident. Anyone with a sense of real attachment to the place and people, will have a hard side to get through, but recognize the challenges of trust that are in play. It was not an accident, and quite brilliantly understood, though short on elaborating to the greater audience. It's worth watching a couple times, pick up on the nuance overlooked the first time through. There are political concessions made in every flick, or great work of art. Getting the point through, and keeping everyone happy, is hard to do. Especially with a hard subject in focus, and considering the inspiration for a flick like District 9. South Africa during the Cold war, was a beautiful clusterfuck, and one of the sacrificial lambs nobody paid attention to in full focus. Now they are fucked. |
|
Many here can’t get past the SJW stuff that peppers Bloomkamp’s films. It is irksome sometimes. It’s a shame too, because he is a really neat sci-fi creator. I wish they’d have followed through with him helming an Alien movie. I’d have liked to see what he’d have done with it before Ridley Scott took it back over and buttfucked what would ultimately become Alien Covenant.

I saw it in theaters when it came out & thought it was horrible.

I thought the basic premise was kind of brilliant.
Most Sci-Fi movies have the visiting aliens either be invaders or usher in some new Age of Enlightenment. In District 9 they show up, drop off a few million of their useless FSA, and then take off leaving them to be our problem. And yes, the fact that they integrated very well with the human versions of themselves (and how governments tried to deal with them) was a very important social commentary. |
|
First 20 minutes is great. Then it seemed like another director (who sucked) took over.

I would like to see a sequel and a prequel. What brought them here and what will it be like in their world now.

Allegory
There is a reason it was set in SA beyond funding and such. |

I ignored it for years thinking it looked stupid, then I actually watched it.
I was entertained. |

Being from SA and having lived in both Apartheid and Democratic eras, I can tell you the film is LOADED with irony.
The representative government (supposedly what SA has now and in the film) is a carbon copy of the Apartheid government. The moving of undesirable people to an out of the way area is also very much a thing. Great film. I enjoyed it. Know a few folks that worked on it behind the scenes. |
