That's not how the constitution works.

Where does the constitution say the Congress can't bring you up on charges in the House of Representatives and then try you in the Senate?

William Belknap. He was acquitted because a large minority of the Senate believed the impeachment of a private citizen to be unconstitutional, although everyone agreed he was guilty.

Trump was never a judge or senator. Making things up to suit your opinion is unbecoming, and certainly not correct. Also, either Trump is potus, and impeachable, or no longer potus, and no longer impeachable. Seems clear that the statute of limitations in that regard ran out with his term in office.

Yeah, but the next section says:

Article I, Section 3, Clause 7:

Judgment in Cases of Impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from Office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any Office of honor, Trust or Profit under the United States: but the Party convicted shall nevertheless be liable and subject to Indictment, Trial, Judgment and Punishment, according to Law.

He's already out of office but they can still prevent him from being elected again, and kill his lifetime pay.

There is no such thing as "former president" in the Constitution, so a trial now looks more like a bill of attainder than a impeachment trial (and no Chief Justice either.)  If Trump was so bad why didn't they choose to have a Senate trial and vote before the inauguration?  If it was truly an emergency they could have.  Nasty Pelosi didn't even send over the paperwork until 1/25.

OTOH, one could argue that since Trump actually won the election, he really is President, so the trial is in order

If the CJ isn't there, then it's not an impeachment trial.  It's just a stage show.

And Roberts is correct.  You can't try someone who isn't in office.  No different than trying someone who's dead or trying the Tooth Fairy.

Why don't they make themselves useful and impeach Jimmy Carter for being weak and generally lousy?

They could take this to the logical conclusion; dig up dead presidents and impeach them, like the English did with Cromwell.  Woodrow Wilson's desiccated head would make a great paperweight for my office.  He could probably be impeached for saying intemperate things about the Germans.

I think this might well be what this is all about.

Clearly, they're so scared of Trump that they're going forward with this unconstitutional sham in an effort to prohibit him from running in 2024.

The next logical step, if this is allowed to stand, is to start preemptively impeaching people to prohibit them from running.
