GD always entertaining, glad I asked.  I'll keep an eye out for a replacement barrel, just in case, but probably leave it alone for now.  I like AR projects, but I'll put the money into a optic or something for now and remember its 1:9 and only shoot 55 and 62g.

My old Maine Bushy is 1:9 and does decent with 75gr Gold Dots. It does better with lighter target ammo, but I really don't see much accuracy difference from Federal/Lake City 62 (which is certainly NOT an accurate ammo in most anything).

Has anyone bothered to accuracy test their 1x9 barrels?

I have a 20" a2 Hbar that is kind of a clone of my DCM match gun. I was always going to install a free floated 1x8 match barrel on it, but the 1x9 stock barrel shot my match loads just as well as my DCM gun. Some 1x9 barrels will shoot heavy bullets just fine. My 600 yard round was a 90 grain match king.

Absolutely.  It will go bang, won’t it?

A time may come when you’re not so picky.

A true 9 can shoot the mag length stuff; my experience is that button rifling is slower than what's stamped. The 80gr SMK is barely above 1.1 SG. The 90gr SMK is just below 1.0.

As long as the 16" bbl doesn't have a carbine gas system.

my 1:9 AUG has never had a problem with 77gr SMKs. maybe it's the 20" barrel?

not a fast enuf twist.   i have one and at 100 yards the 55 grain Wolf bullets come in sideways.

That has nothing to do with the twist rate.

You folks are nuts.

I have a 1/9, 16in, carbine gassed like hundreds of thousands of other AR owners and it shoots fine along with being crazy reliable.

Guess what, it spits 77gr OTM bullets into 1.5 MOA.  Not crazy accurate but acceptable.

OP put your money into ammo.

I have one that shoots M183 and M855 reliably and reasonably precisely and accurately.

I see no need to get rid of it.

Ive got a mix bag of 1/7 and 1/9.

In a nutshell they will both shoot all middle weights fine but the lightest (45gn) favors the 1/9 and the heaviest (77-80gn) favors 1/7.

Havent noticed any accuracy issues but then again I shoot irons at 100yds tops.

My 1/9 16” shoots incredibly accurate with hand load 69gr SMK to 500yds.

I just sold a carbine with a 1/9 twist barrel and then one with 1/7 twist barrel. I don't think the buyers even cared.

i shoot M855 62gr out of my 1/9 rifles all the time with no problem. just as accurate as the M193 55gr. Ok...so i'm not shooting 69gr or 77 gr ...but who can find that now anyway.

1:7 twist was selected for the M16A2 to stabilize M856 tracer, which is much longer than M855.

Measure the twist.

My 1/9 RRA would stabilize 75gr PPU at 100 yards no problem. I only upgraded because I wanted to have a barrel that would handle anything I could find, purchase or shoot in it without worry, as if at some point in the future the only available options would be 77 gr Match King or 70gr tsx.

Actually, it's an advantage to have a slow twist rate. That way the bullets will tumble in the air, and through flesh; the bullet can enter through the leg and exit through the top of the head.

I use 77gr+ through my 1/12" barrel, and it is sure to kill anything it hits.

Fact.

Toss it in the trash because nobody has ever been able to shoot heavy bullets accurately from a 1 in 9 barrel.

I'm lying.

It's as useful now as the day it was made.

Don't lie to him. You know full well that 1:9 barrels are no good for anything. Mine expired long ago and now all it will to is launch bullets to hit anything I aim at within a reasonable distance. Fucking useless thing. With this garbage tube on my rifle, I'm not able to obsess over slight gains in accuracy over distances I'm unlikely to ever need to shoot. Fortunately I'm stupid and have come to accept that  my farthest visible neighbors are about 410 and 690 yards away and my $400 professional super dooper sniper rifle can do the precision work even though my AR is only good as an area effect weapon at that distance.
