Quoted: This is the advice I was secretly hoping for. Definitely want a calm and friendly rabbit to start off with. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted: Quoted: I will warn you, the best meat producers are New Zealands, but they aren’t friendly. Flemish Giants take a lot longer to grow out, but they are much, much friendlier. Don’t get her New Zealands to raise out even if it is for meat. That’s an excellent way to get her to hate taking care of rabbits. This is the advice I was secretly hoping for. Definitely want a calm and friendly rabbit to start off with. You have to be careful with the giants when you pick them up. They’re heavy enough that they can get injured if you scruff them like you would a smaller rabbit. Handle them from the time they’re young, and you’ll be able to pick them up like you would a puppy or cat. Did you see the pic of Duckski and the rabbit on our farm page? That was a 7 month old Flemish Giant buck. He’s not even close to full grown, but he’s super cuddly. |

They’re friendlier than New Zealands but are still a popular, fast growth meat breed. |

Quoted: So... how do they taste? View Quote Like rabbit. The thing about the giants is that early growth is all skeletal. They pack on muscle later. So even though they’re big-framed, if you slaughter early like you would with a NZ or Californian, you just get a tiny bit of meat over a huge skeleton. You really have to wait almost 6 months for them to mature enough to be worth slaughtering. |
