Useless trivia for you.. IIRC The Bonhomie Dick was once Captained by Doors front man Jim Morrison’s dad.. Admiral Steve Morrison.... I have seen photos of a very conservative looking Jim Morrison firing a M1 Thompson SMG off the side of that ship while his dad watches in the background

Quoted: Remember when you all laughed at the Russians when their carrier caught on fire? Either our navy is losing its edge in the name of diversity/inclusion or shit happens. Take your pick. Hopefully they can get it under control without any more injuries. View Quote Our big navy lost its edge years ago. I can’t believe what I see go on with the leadership and crews these days. Everyday I go to work, it reminds me why I ended my enlistment. This doesn’t esnt look good. For as long as it has gone on, I’m not sure this will be worth saving from a financial perspective. Prayers that the crew and firefighting teams got out of there. |

Something just went on the aft end of the ship.
Much more black smoke. Not good. |
|
|
The amount of smoke in that live feed makes me think years of repair once it's put out.

Not good. They have evacuated the pier of all personnel. They evacuated the lot where the ground video was at.
She may burn for a good while. At this rate they might have to put enough water in her to sink her. |

Some of the shit I saw while working in shipyards as a fitter/welder would curl your toes. I'm surprised this shit doesn't happen more often. I walked out of two jobs due to safety concerns. I mean set my torch/welder down, picked up my gear and walked out and only stopped in the office long enough to tell them I quit and to mail my last check to me. I told one of them that working as a lion tamer dressed up as gazelle and covered with blood and entrails would be a much safer job than working in their shipyard.
Prayers for the lost sailor and those who have been injured. |

Like was brought up in another thread recently, shipboard fires burn HOT once they get into the paint/lagging/insulation throughout. Tugs are probably trying to cool the sides to slow the spread by cooling the hull and any bulkheads and keeping things on them below their flashpoint, but not a whole lot you can do if you cant get agent onto the fire. Foam is recommended to get deep into the lagging, but its hard to get where you need it if you can only hit it from hatches outside the ship. I have only been watching the tugs fighting the starboard side, but who knows if they have hoseteams on the port side that are trying to get into the ship and get to the interior. With how long it has gone and damage it may have caused, they may have pulled hoseteams back for their safety and are just trying to hit it externally.
Once it really starts rolling like it is, putting it out is much more difficult. |

Looks like the ship is a total loss. I doubt it'll be worth it to repair it.

Quoted: Good chance somebody was welding and set something off on the other side of a bulkhead. I was on the Essex LHD2 from 92 to 94 and recall their were extremely strict protocols for any type of welding on board. Had to have a fire guard and show the on-duty damage control officer exactly what they were going to be welding etc. You just did not crank up the welder and get to it. That's really sad to see. I hope it can be saved. View Quote I'm sure we bumped into each other, I was on the Steaming Deuce from 92 to 96. |

That ship is gonna be fubar for a very long, long time if it is slavageable. |

Quoted: Dense black smoke coming out the stern now. Definitely fuel. View Quote When I was a FF we were taught: Black smoke = Plastics, fuels(diesel, gasoline), high density foams etc. Brown smoke= Wood, building materials, papers, etc White smoke= Steam On a ship like that, I would assume lots of hazardous materials, not to mention insulation on wires, room contents, fuels and also ordnance... |
